Brahmastra wipes out over ₹800 crore wealth of PVR and Inox ... (Business Insider India)

Brahmastra, the first installment in the Ranbir Kapoor-Alia Bhatt starrer trilogy, has opened to tepid reviews from analysts and viewers. Weak reviews have.

[Brahmāstra hits the advance booking bulls eye but needs word of mouth publicity](https://www.businessinsider.in/entertainment/news/brahmstra-hits-the-advance-booking-bulls-eye-but-needs-word-of-mouth-publicity/articleshow/94055321.cms) [Time to buy banks? However, it looks like the first round of disappointed viewers are spreading the bad word out. In Indian mythology, Brahmastra is known as a weapon of unstoppable destruction, which can only be stopped by its counterattack astra (weapon). This analysis was made before the weak reviews poured in. [said](https://twitter.com/_omkarb14/status/1568138364100165640')after watching the movie today. “We believe a positive word of mouth and audience acceptance can help the film breach the upper end,” said Karan Taurani of Elara Capital. “The lifetime box office (collection) for the film is estimated to be in a wide range of ₹130-200 crore, based on the strong advances,” says a media note by Elara Capital. Another viewer explained that beyond the visual effects, the movie was a hotch-potch of bad story-telling, and character development, among other issues. Ironically, the movie could end up being a victim of the weapon it is named after. Movie reviewer and analyst Taran Adarsh gave the Ranbir-Alia starrer a two-star rating, saying that the movie is a king-sized disappointment. If Brahmastra tanks, it could not only be one of the biggest Bollywood flops, but it could also derail the Hindi movie industry’s hopes of a revival at a time when several South Indian movies have broken records nationwide. - The movie with an ensemble cast has been in the making for years and its budget is said to be ₹410 crore.

Alia Bhatt's striking performance could not save film from falling flat.

The same will happen with the next set of actors who decide to be part of Brahmastra movie cast. Given that this is the first time Bollywood has even attempted a film in this genre and at such a scale, it is a shame that the execution turned out to be boring. As opposed to his claim in one of the videos doing the rounds on social media, Brahmastra’s VFX is nowhere near that of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Shah Rukh Khan plays renowned scientist Mohan Bhargav who possesses Vanar Astra (monkey power) and is shown to be a part of the community that is charged with protecting the Brahmastra. In the razzmatazz and the dazzle, the frenetic music and the array of never-seen-before special effects, there is an acute lack of an arc, an angle, as if the makers did not consider the plot to be worthy enough of any time, money or attention. (Who are you and what is happening here?) asks Alia Bhatt's character Isha, more than once in Ayan Mukerji's mega-tent pole Brahmastra, part one of what is said to be the most expensive Bollywood trilogy till date with a production cost of Rs 410 crore.

Brahmastra review: Alia- Ranbir chemistry light the screen on fire ... (News Live)

The relentless action that explodes on the screen accompanied by blinding fireworks and a high-decibel background score is a key part of the nearly.

Mouni Roy, playing the arch-villainess who is out to wrest the brahmastra and wreak havoc on mankind, carries the daunting weight of the role without wilting. With Ranbir Kapoor anchoring the action and the screenplay steering clear of the peddling of unbridled machismo, what we have is a male protagonist who willingly cedes ground to the woman in his life. In the same breath, he reveals that he plans to adopt the surname of his wife. He is aided by his beloved Isha (Alia Bhatt), a woman who isn’t given to playing second fiddle, and a homilies-spouting Guru (Amitabh Bachchan), who dwells in an ashram in the Himalayas where he grooms the next generation of defenders of the light. But once the exposition is out of the way, Brahmastra hurtles along towards the all-important climactic clash between Shiva and Junoon, who is guided by a shadowy evil being. That apart, the play on Shiva and Parvati – Isha is one of Durga’s names – is obvious, but one character rechristens the male protagonist ‘Dragon’, perhaps a nod to Norse and Viking mythology with an eye on universalizing a story rooted in Bharatvarsh. While the story of Brahmastra was never really meant to be simple, it’s the magic of VFX (all made in India), treatment of the astras, and grandeur of everything surrounding the characters that make it a visual spectacle and truly a cinematic experience to be enjoyed on the big screen. Brahmastra Part One: Shiva is a high-octane blend of generic Hollywood conventions and predictable Bollywood tics, of technical razzmatazz and emotional traction. In another scene early in the film, Shiva says to Isha that he has no surname because he does not know who his father is. Shiva (Ranbir Kapoor) is a DJ who falls for Isha (Alia Bhatt) at first sight and as their romance blossoms, his quest to find the reason behind his strange connection with fire becomes even stronger. But the duo has no time to pause and wonder what on earth is going on. Mukerji, who spent almost eight years to come out with the final film, clearly has gone overboard with certain aspects, but thankfully, it never reaches a point that it starts to bother and distract.

Brahmastra Part One Shiva Review: Underwhelming Superhero ... (TheWrap)

This Hindi-language would-be blockbuster plays out as exceedingly familiar, and even the musical numbers are average at best.

Big B has been passing the proverbial baton to the next generation of Bollywood stars for a few years now, but very few of his successors have successfully broken out of their cookie-cutter star roles. Shiva’s also plagued by “Lord of the Rings”–style visions of Dev, a fiery stone deity who psychically empowers the evil Junoon (TV star Mouni Roy), the latter of whom murders Khan’s character and steals his portion of the Brahmāstra. Still, for such an expensive and well-hyped production, “Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva” will probably disappoint fans of recent maximalist Indian blockbusters, particularly South Indian hitmaker S.S. (Diwali is “a festival of light,” as a newspaper headline boldly declares within the movie) The main selling points of “Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva,” which follows a formulaic plot to thwart an evil demigod, are its lavish special effects and MCU-style branding. A handsomely animated opening scene establishes the movie’s mytho-fantasy backstory: for centuries, the Brahmānsh, a clandestine group of Himalayan cultists, have protected the world using their super-powered Astra weapons, like the Brahmāstra, the Astra whatsit to rule them all.

This seems to beat the opening day figures of Ranbir's highest opening so far, Sanju, which collected ₹34.75 crore on day one in 2018. The Ayan Mukerji film recorded a thunderous opening with collections coming in the range of around ₹35-36 crore despite releasing on a non-holiday. After the advance booking opened for Brahmastra, tickets worth ₹11 crore were sold by Wednesday night. Good advance booking figures had given hope that the film may do wonders on day one of its release in five languages including Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu. It also hinted at overseas collections of around $8-10 million during the weekend. The report stated that the collections of the Hindi version will be around ₹32-33 crore nett.

Brahmastra is a gift of disappointments which keeps on giving ... (Firstpost)

'Mujhe iss astra ki shakti ka ehsaas hai Scientist sahab' – says Junoon, the antagonist of Brahmastra, played by the fierce Mouni Roy.

The usage of the word ‘membership’ to refer to the induction of Shiva into the secret society takes away from the seriousness of the scene. Blunders and misfit dialogues aside, the most painful part in Brahmastra was seeing Alia Bhatt, unarguably the best actress of our generation, reduced to a prop. One cannot help but wonder why Alia went for a role as inconsequential as that of Isha who serves little-to-no purpose in the grand scheme of things. It has cinematic brilliance and good visual effects but lacks soul and fails to make the audience feel for its characters. [Amitabh Bachchan](https://www.firstpost.com/tag/amitabh-bachchan)) who is the leader of Brahmansh, a secret society meant to guard Brahmastra. The usage of Love Storiya in Kesariya was only the tip of the iceberg. Ayan’s vision is truly brought to life on the celluloid but sadly, it is the script and the writing which is the hamartia of Brahmastra, the hero all of us hoped would revive Bollywood. As a fantasy film which borrows much of its themes and backstory from the ancient Indian mythology and the legends of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, one would expect the writers to stick to using Hindi words to address characters and symbols. [Brahmastra](https://www.firstpost.com/tag/brahmastra), played by the fierce [Mouni Roy](https://www.firstpost.com/tag/mouni-roy). When we see Shiva and Isha discuss the astras, they talk of ‘light’ many times. There is also a high-octane chase sequence featuring one of Junoon’s ‘killers’ which will keep you on the edge of your seat. They appear as sudden bursts of brilliance in between scenes which are monotonous and marred by poor writing.

RECOMMENDED Made on a massive budget of around Rs 450 crores, Brahmastra marketed itself as a mix of mythology and never seen before visual effects. Due to the Ganesh Chaturthi half day, cities in Maharashtra recorded good numbers in the second half. With this momentum, trade analysts feel the movie might join the elite club of Rs 100 crore by end of this weekend. The Nizam and Mysore circuits were also expected to record huge collections in the South. According to a report in Bollywood Hungama, the three national chains have collected around Rs 18.50 crore from all the versions, whereas the non-national chains added another Rs 18.50 crore to take the Day 1 earnings to the Rs 37-crore mark. Bahubali director SS Rajamouli has supervised the VFX and special effects. The report added that the Hindi version collected around Rs 32-33 crore net, whereas around $8-10 million is expected from the overseas collection. Globally, he said the movie grossed around Rs 75 crore in total on day 1. Earlier, a report on Boxofficeindia.com highlighted that the Ayan Mukerji film may earn around Rs 35-36 crore net in all its versions. The opening day figures are at least a positive start despite the flak the film has received from reviewers. Greater clarity will emerge over the weekend if the film will recover the production cost.

Review: Brahmastra (2022) is Boring Brahminical Bullshit (High on Films)

After watching Shamshera, I wondered if Ranbir was ever a good actor. Brahmastra (2022) came with an answer, he wasn't.

And when it is represented, it is represented as the villagers who are gullible to be roped into violence as tools of violence. Brahmastra is an outcome of Brahminism that pretends to be the vibrant dharma of the subcontinent. The film harps about love through some of the worst dialogues ever written in the history of cinema and propagates an expired, toxic idea of love that has no meaning in the contemporary era, even and especially for the underprivileged but except for privileged ignorant Brahmins who happen to love their caste existence and call it religion. It is perhaps a coincidence that I had watched Pa Ranjith’s angry but passionate take on contemporary traditions of love in his film Natchathiram Nagargiradhu a night before watching Brahmastra, which is Dharma Studio’s take on love and its tenets. Because Shiva is an orphan who has seen a lot and yet, has rivers of positivity flowing inside of him, and he never misses the birthdays of orphan children at the orphanage from where he graduated. From the top of the hierarchy, the ugliness of the bottom is perceived to be a class phenomenon quite cunningly. In short, the upper castes convinced the world that they are in the majority, which explains their social visibility, whereas, in reality, they form less than 30% of the Indian population, and their visibility is not due to their overwhelming number but due to resource capture that they have consciously done using their social capital. At the same time, the marginalized caste groups were reduced to the status of supplicants who were to be given exceptions and concessions by this large majority of upper castes. He is one of the weapons from the Hindu myth, and the battle is between light and darkness. In his article Caste and Castelessness, Satish Deshpande argues how the three historically upper caste groups redefined themselves to belong to the general category, thereby muting their caste identity in the social order without giving away the practices of caste assertion. A not surprising but nevertheless enraging attribute of the film is the soft propagation of religious ignorance in the garb of faith. Not enough thought is given to the progression of events in the screenplay.

'Brahmastra': hellbent on proving love is the most powerful weapon (EastMojo)

Cast: Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy, Nagarjuna Akkineni, Shah Rukh Khan; Director: Ayan Mukerji. Everything good and bad about ...

In addition, there is a total disregard for Sanatan Itihasa and they try to sell Rumi-ism in the name of Sanatan culture and the all-pervading language of love. I wanted to know their genies, their functionalities, how they could be earned, and how the people in possession of them actually earned them. Instead, the film is hellbent on proving how love is the most powerful weapon of all and perpetually ends up making a mockery of the most powerful weapon in the world. The cinematography and background score of the film are two of its greatest strength. The perfect example of this is seen in a scene where Shiva and Isha learn that an important character is in mortal danger and that they need to go to Varanasi to inform him of this danger. The love story drags in the second half and by the end of the film, it starts getting on your nerves. I thoroughly enjoyed Ranbir and Alia’s spirited performance and evident chemistry even though their characters and the development of their romance in the film are terribly written. The fact that his character sacrifices his all to thwart the evil, adds a lot of heroism to his essay and elevates the character two folds in its final moments. The story and the screenplay were lackluster and there was no depth in any of the characters. There are many sequences in the film that could have worked but are single-handedly brought down by the poor dialogues that not only drain the seriousness or romance out of these sequences but also make you laugh for all the wrong reasons. He is also destined to aid the safeguard of a weapon that has been protected by a clandestine society for thousands of years. Then I thought, it would be best to just jot down all that was good and bad in the film and let my readers decide whether the pros outweigh the cons for them or not.
