The Queen is under medical supervision at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, and royal family members are reportedly traveling there to be by her bedside.

The United Kingdom celebrated her 70 years on the throne with a [Platinum Jubilee](https://www.npr.org/2022/06/01/1102335388/queen-elizabeth-platinum-jubilee-great-britain-royal-family) in June. Elizabeth's health has been of concern in recent years, and more so over the summer. Elizabeth also missed the Braemar Gathering highland games earlier this month.

The 96-year-old monarch appeared frail in photos with the new British prime minister, Liz Truss, at Balmoral on Tuesday — though not at death’s door. No details were provided, and it remains unclear what symptoms the queen is displaying and whether she is suffering from an illness.

Buckingham Palace has announced the death of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II. The queen, who was 96, died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.

The Duchess of Cornwall is now queen consort. She became heir to the throne when her father succeeded as King George VI in 1936 upon the unanticipated abdication of his elder brother King Edward VIII, who had no children. The Prince of Wales is now king and head of state. In 2011, she became the first British monarch to visit the State since independence. [ She was the first British monarch since King Henry VII who did not reign over the whole island of Ireland.

"The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow." Buckingham Palace confirmed the queen's death at her residence in Balmoral in a statement.
