Palace manager Patrick Vieira also made two changes with Tyrick Mitchell and Jordan Ayew coming in for Nathaniel Clyne and Michael Olise. Newcastle: Pope, ...

He has two defenders ahead of him but pushes his way into the box to hit a low shot across goal, and Pope sticks out a leg to deny him. Ayew gets away down the right again and lays it off to Edouard on the edge of the box. There's a nervy moment at the back for Palace as it's knocked back to Guaita and Isak puts him straight under pressure. He takes it around Anderson before looking for the near bottom corner, and Guaita gets down to tip it wide. Joelinton scuffs his clearance and Guehi is hovering, but Botman manages to hook it away just in time. Murphy plays a clever one-two with Joelinton down the right of the box, and the substitute hits the shot first time when he gets it back. Newcastle United vs Crystal Palace Guehi throws himself in front of it, and Anderson's cross is blocked on the far side. The influential pair, who sat out Wednesday night’s 2-1 defeat at Liverpool with hamstring injuries, were absent once again as Sven Botman and Fabian Schar returned in place of Jamaal Lascelles and Dan Burn in the only two changes. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was once again without Bruno Guimaraes and Allan Saint-Maximin for the Premier League clash with Crystal Palace. Schar plays a brilliant throughball down the middle to Anderson, and he helps it onto Willock on the edge of the box. A pundit has sung the praises of Newcastle United's record signing Alexander Isak after he got on the scoresheet in his debut against Liverpool.

They were the finishes of a high-quality centre-forward. [Newcastle](https://www.teamtalk.com/newcastle-united) came in for the striker on August 26 and managed to land him in a club-record deal. But the goal was ruled out for an incredibly close offside. This is £20m more than the Magpies spent on Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes in previous transfers. “The use of his pace, he’s a strong lad, great on the ball, aerial ability – and the finishes for the two goals. Newcastle United held by Crystal Palace as Var rules out goal for ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

The club's £60 million record signing lacked conviction in front of goal at an expectant St James' Park.

We struggled to get him in the game, but he’s barely trained with us and hasn’t been here a week yet. “The good thing is we are creating chances in every area of our performance, we just need to take them.” A contentious VAR call did not help, a goal ruled out in the second half when Joe Willock was judged by the video officials - and subsequently referee Michael Salisbury agreed - to have jumped into goalkeeper Vicente Guaita. Isak had another chance before the break, a tame side footed effort straight at the goalkeeper but others missed equally significant opportunities. There was only green grass in front of him as his long legs got up to a gallop. Crystal Palace missed some too, Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope making two brilliant saves, one each half to deny Jean-Phillipe Mateta and substitute Odsonne Edouard, but this was a game the Magpies should have won.

He came to life a little bit in the second half, there were certain moments of real quality. But Howe expects him to get better as the team get used to playing with him.

An encyclopedia of football shirts and boots knowledge – both past and present – Mark has also been to the FA Cup and League Cup finals for FFT and has written pieces for the mag ranging on subjects from Bobby Robson's season at Barcelona to Robinho's career. With Liverpool struggling at the start of this season, it may even be enough to secure second, with 2020/21 seeing United finish with 74 behind champions City. Across the season, that works out at 76 points a season. 62 points last season would have placed Newcastle sixth in the table, just between Arsenal and Manchester United. They'd draw with Norwich in a relegation six-pointer, Howe would beat his former employers Burnley and then came three consecutive losses on the trot. The former Bournemouth boss has galvanised the Toon: big signings have helped, of course, but they look like a completely different side.

Elliot Anderson's brilliant Newcastle United cameo points to one thing (Shields Gazette)

For the second game running, Newcastle United's players left the pitch aggrieved at a refereeing decision.

Newcastle hadn’t created a chance for Isak since his early opportunity, and a late opportunity fell to Willock. United thought they had got their breakthrough in the 51st minute when Tyrick Mitchell put the ball past his own goalkeeper after a deep Trippier free-kick was headed back across goal. They replaced Fraser and Miguel Almiron. After a scrappy period of play, United started to exert some sustained pressure on their visitors. Sven Botman and Fabian Schar replaced Dan Burn and Jamaal Lascelles in the starting XI. The striker, however, saw his attempted chip blocked by Vicente Guaita.
