Graeme Souness tries to make Mo Salah 'angry' as Man Utd claim ... (Daily Express)

LIVERPOOL ace Mohamed Salah has only scored two of his side's 15 Premier League goals this season.

Salah will be hoping to rediscover his best form when Liverpool begin their Champions League campaign with a trip to Napoli on Wednesday night. “I just hope - and he’s signed the big contract he wanted - but at this level if you knock off half a per cent or one per cent then you are not the same player. Salah has enjoyed a fecund five-year stint on Merseyside since joining Liverpool from Roma in 2017. “I’m looking at Salah for Liverpool against Man Utd and in the first five minutes Martinez goes right through him,” Souness told Sky Sports after the Reds’ clash at Goodison Park. Salah produced another below par performance against [Everton](/latest/everton-fc) on Saturday afternoon as the Reds were held to a goalless draw. During Liverpool’s clash against Manchester United last month, the 30-year-old was on the end of a crunching tackle from Lisandro Martinez in the early stages of the game.

Jurgen Klopp has a Mo Salah problem – and it needs to be solved ... (Sunday World)

THE alarm bells will be ringing for Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp after the 0-0 draw at Everton and Mohamed Salah will be at the heart of his concern.

Everton thought they scored through Conor Coady on 68 minutes, but I could see straight away he was offside. Salah so nearly won it at the end and you have to give Pickford a lot of credit for tipping his effort onto the post. Darwin Nunez could have had a hat-trick if he had been more clinical and a little more fortunate, and his effort that was tipped onto the crossbar by Pickford at the end of the first half was so nearly a goal-of-the-season contender. They are lacking fluidity in the final third of the pitch and a lot of the chances they created would have ended in goals if the strikers had aimed for the corners of the net. Then, to add to it all, he went and ploughed into Liverpool’s players with a number of feisty challenges that should have resulted in a booking. Injuries have had an impact on their start to their season, there is no denying that, but the excuses need to stop now and the wins need to start flowing.

We want to have Mo there in the position and we want to have, and have had Mo, in central positions as well. One vital and pressing challenge Klopp faces is to restore the supply line to Salah in dangerous areas. I spoke a lot about it; I’m not sure I was clear enough exactly what I wanted in the first half." [Jürgen Klopp](https://www.liverpool.com/liverpool-fc-news/features/liverpool-jurgen-klopp-season-prediction-24925884) fielded questions after Saturday’s goalless draw about why Salah was seemingly drifting wider than usual in games. Perhaps, if Souness wanted, he could use this drop-off to justify his argument, but it’s not as if Salah is offering nothing. It was Salah, let’s not forget, who thought he had won the league for Liverpool when he put the Reds in front against Wolves on the final day, only for the heartbreaking truth to quickly emerge. Salah was a mere fraction away from heroism and from producing another iconic moment in the modern history of Liverpool Football Club. This year, he finds himself below Aleksandar Mitrović of Fulham and Ivan Toney of Brentford, though both players admittedly have taken penalties. He may have only netted twice in his first six matches this season, but that’s not because he’s settled into his ‘armchair’. In tandem with that, his average xG per 90 has sunk from 0.8 to 0.52. Salah swept the ball goalwards first time with the side of his left foot and, via a slight touch from man-of-the-match Jordan Pickford, it came back off the post.

But he could have scored again in the last minute pretty much.’ ‘Actually we only recovered, we spoke a lot about it, I’m not sure I was clear enough in the first half what we wanted. Today especially we wanted to use the boys a bit more centrally, but we didn’t have a lot of time to train obviously. I’ve not seen the same Mo Salah since. Souness wrong with 'armchair' criticism as Salah creates 20 ... (Rousing the Kop)

Graeme Souness believes Mohamed Salah is in very poor form right now. His 'armchair' comments are wide of the mark, however.

The goals will come but Salah is unquestionably having a positive effect on the team. He’s being forced very wide at the moment, resulting in fewer scoring opportunities. He could still have a few more things fall his way, while less attention from defenders would unlock his game further. And the Egyptian could have more. For one, he’s got two goals and two assists in six Premier League games. “I hope it’s not him getting semi in his armchair.

But arguably more telling has been the poor form of right-wing partner Trent Alexander-Arnold and the constant issues in midfield. It may well prove pivotal as the Reds look to ensure they don't lose touch with the leading pack over the coming weeks. The first is the inevitable adaptation to a new-look attack with Sadio Mane having departed, not helped by Darwin Nunez's suspension and injury to Diogo Jota. Nunez, and to a lesser extent Luis Diaz, haven't yet built up the reputation of danger to be given such special treatment. Instead, the concern for Klopp is how to once again capitalise on his world-class talents. Salah demonstrated hints of linking up with Harvey Elliott, now more regular in that right midfield position, before the youngster's injury early last term, and while the equaliser against Newcastle showed signs of a growing partnership, it remains a work in progress. Salah was given poor service before half-time at Fulham yet produced an assist and goal in the second half. Having ended speculation over his future by penning a lucrative new long-term contract during the summer, the critics are also looking at the end to last season in which he netted only five times in his final 20 Liverpool matches. Well, he has been missing for the last three games." The problem isn't Salah himself. Take the game at Everton. Is that to do with the new centre-forward?

Jurgen Klopp's experiment with Mohamed Salah has failed, but ... (iNews)

Klopp's Salah experiment is now affecting the Egyptian's potency in front of goal, as teams become preoccupied with Haaland-style No 9s.

This does not mean he will get in the way of Nunez’s predatory instincts, not at all. Of course, this is not too late to rectify. His shots from inside the box have dropped from 3.0 to 2.0 and his shots on target have dropped from 2.0 to 0.8. If that is the case (and these are early days so it is mere theory), that would surely be a mistake. Last season, he created 63 chances over the course of the league season; he has already created 24 this season, more than any other player in the Premier League. Rather than drifting centrally, he is tending to hug the touchline more. That is nothing new, even at an elite level. What is the explanation for this? And it is not working, especially for the Egyptian, whether Klopp admits it or not. If he continued at his current rate, he would create 123 chances this season, almost double last season’s number. And that was when taking kick off in the centre circle. If you drew a line through the middle of the Goodison Park pitch, through both penalty spots, Salah had one touch to the left of that centre line, all match.
