We just need to do a great start.” - ‘On the limit’ - I think in the end we did a decent job. He added that “P6 is not a terrible place to start. “Max did a great lap in the end. If we can fight these guys and have a battle with these three ahead of me, that would be an amazing experience.” It brought a fourth pole this season and 17th of his career for Red Bull’s runaway series leader. “We changed things a lot. In the beginning, I was pretty scared because Max was much, much quicker on used tyres. We had a difficult day, but we worked really well overnight. “Especially after yesterday! Yesterday was a bit rushed in FP2 to get the car together, but today the car was enjoyable to drive.” “The whole team turned it around and today we had a quick race car again, but it was very close and the pole lap was insane.

Max Verstappen snatched pole position for his home race from Charles Leclerc yesterday and looks set to deliver another dominant victory this afternoon to increase his lead in the championship standings. But a few acutely minor errors on his final improved run opened the door to Verstappen and the Flying Dutchman powered through, capturing top spot by just 0.021 seconds for, perhaps surprisingly, just his fourth pole of 2022. The entire race schedule will be broadcast live on Sky Sports F1 with coverage starting at 12:30pm. Lewis Hamilton was hoping for a battle with Red Bull and Ferrari at the Dutch Grand Prix after qualifying in fourth. The tightest margin of the year, in fact. The Dutch driver’s victory last time out in Belgium took him to 29 career victories, just three short of Fernando Alonso, placing him eighth on the all-time list. But to throw it on the track is just stupid,” Verstappen told reporters after taking pole position. But I am hoping that that means we are closer and even closer in the race and if we are that would be fantastic. only being a tenth behind a Red Bull was a great feeling and really gave me a lot of hope that I could fight for the front row, but then obviously the yellow flag at the end was a bit unfortunate, but that’s motor racing. If we can fight these guys and have a battle with these three ahead of me, that would be an amazing experience.” Hamilton’s Mercedes team are in much better shape than a week ago in Belgium with the short, twisty Zandvoort track better suited to their machinery. Lap-by-lap report: Can Max Verstappen further extend his championship lead with a win on home turf? Find out with Alex Hess.
Lap 29/72: Hamilton pits from the lead and his team whack on a set of hard compounds – which will see him through to the finish line. Lap 45/72: “Tyres not fitted, tyres not fitted!” barks Tsunoda into his radio as he veers to a stop by the side of the track. Verstappen and Leclerc occupy first and second, but both will need another stop – and probably soon – and will surrender their places to the Mercedes pair of Hamilton and Russell (currently third and fourth) when they do. Lap 49/72: Verstappen jumps at the the chance to pit. Lap 48/72: Tsunoda’s team appear to be checking his belt and wheel. He toddles out of the pit lane, but then again says it’s “not OK” and is told to stop. The upshot of that is Verstappen saved himself the 10 or so seconds he’d have lost to Hamilton at a normal pitstop. Lap 72/72: Russell streaks over the finish line three seconds later, soon followed by Leclerc in the final podium place. The Mercedes man has some fresh tyres he wasn’t expecting –but he’ll do pretty well to catch the Verstappen, who signals his intent by clocking up a fastest lap. The safety car will be out of here after this lap. He didn’t like the fact that his teammate was beckoned in for soft tyres while he stayed out. The Ferarri man holds on to P5.

MAX VERSTAPPEN managed to win the Dutch Grand Prix after Lewis Hamilton saw his race go up in smoke.
"To hold flares already, it's nice, there's a limit to how much, but to throw it on the track is just stupid and I think also the person got removed. Tsunoda comes back in to the pits for running repairs before coming out again and immediately encountering problems again. We struggled to find the feeling on the hard tyres, so we’ll analyse that." "We timed it really well out of that last corner into the banking. Hamilton was audibly furious with his Mercedes colleagues over his team radio and will feel incredibly hard done by after coming so close to earning his first Grand Prix victory of the year. You could see the draft was quite strong and we got ahead. The Dutchman managed to pit for soft tyres under the safety car following Valtteri Bottas' retirement and made light work of Hamilton at the restart to claim yet another victory and put one hand on this year's Drivers' Championship trophy. You shouldn't do it." Lap 30: In response to that Verstappen overtake, Hamilton dives into the pitlane to strap on a set of hard tyres. Lap 3: Yellow flags in sector one and it's Magnussen who loses it mid-corner and hits the barrier with a thump. Sainz in P3 is already 3.8 seconds adrift of the front pair and he himself is coming under heavy pressure from Hamilton behind. For fans in Canada, TSN will carry the English-language telecast of races. Lap 33: Russell is also now into the pits so it's as you were at the top as Verstappen leads from Leclerc. He gets a lovely exit out of the final corner and easily gets past Hamilton heading into corner one. Verstappen pits for a soft set of tyres but both Mercedes cars stay out and now Hamilton leads the race! Leclerc is down to P4 after the stops as Ferrari's misery looks set to continue here in the Netherlands. That stoppage came at the perfect time for Verstappen and Red Bull. That seems a lengthy gap but the time is continuing to fall. Hold on, down the back straight Russell jumps Hamilton and the pair nearly collide. Lap 64: During that restart Sainz also overtook Perez into corner one with a lovely move all the way around the outside.

LAP 36: Hamilton comes close as it could be to Perez on the main straight. LAP 7: Hamilton is closing in on Sainz. LAP 28: Gap between Verstappen and Russell is a little more than half a second. Meanwhile, Alonso overtakes Gasly on the home-straight to go 12th. A 12-second pit stop could cost him a place on the podium. LAP 37: Hamilton overtakes Perez round the outside on the main straight, Vettel comes in the way while exiting from the pit lane but the seven-time champion avoids any damage to hold his position. LAP 44: Tsunoda stops near the barriers and complains the tyres aren’t fitted correctly. Advantage, for the time being, to Verstappen as he stays ahead. Hamilton pits and his pit-stop time is 2.8 seconds as well while Mercedes go for the medium tyres as compared to Red Bull’s hard tyres. LAP 55: Bottas stops on the main straight due to engine issues. LAP 72: Final lap of the Dutch Grand Prix. Perez and Sainz fight down the main straight, Perez goes off track trying to go round the outside and into the gravel on turn 1.
Max Verstappen won the Dutch Grand Prix for the second year running to take another big step towards a second World Championship.
Russell and Leclerc both passed Hamilton to complete the podium positions. But the Monegasque driver, who had been running second, still found himself five seconds down on Verstappen after the first round of stops. Strong starts were made by Lance Stroll and Esteban Ocon as they gained two and three places respectively into the top 10. [Valtteri Bottas](https://live.planetf1.com/f1-drivers/valtteri-bottas)‘ [Alfa Romeo](https://live.planetf1.com/f1-teams/Alfa-Romeo) ground to a halt at the end of the main straight with an engine problem and brought out the Safety Car. They were behind the Mercedes cars, however, who at the time had appeared to be on one-stop strategies, with Hamilton’s visit to the pits for hard tyres on lap 30 leaving Verstappen back in the lead after the Dutchman had overtaken George Russell on track and increasing his lead over Leclerc. For the first time in quite a while, Mercedes are running 1-2 at the top, with Verstappen in behind.
Max Verstappen took yet another consummate victory - his 10th in 15 races so far this year - as he marches serenely to a second title that is now inevitable.
But also the car was quite heavy and reducing the weight it all felt a bit more agile." "There is no doubt we have the race pace to be able to win. "I really thought we were going to be fighting for the win," Hamilton said. Hamilton knew he was in trouble, saying over the radio it would be difficult to hold the drivers on softs behind, and so it proved. "The gap after VSC was still big enough to manage," he said. He had the engine in the wrong mode at the restart. There was "no evidence" of any wrongdoing, a spokesman said, pointing out the FIA has access to a lot of data and all team communications. But it was too early for a set of softs, so they fitted hards, which Verstappen had not wanted because he did not like the feel of the car on them. Which required officials to deploy the virtual safety car so the car could be moved to a safe place. Had the race carried on with no caution periods, Verstappen would have pitted and dropped to third. After pitting for tyres, Tsunoda stopped on track on lap 44, and said over the radio that a wheel was lose. A week ago, at high-speed Spa, the Mercedes was out of its "sweet spot".
The Mercedes driver has apologised for an expletive-riddled tirade after a decision not to change his tyres saw him slip from first to fourth.
“The team are a group of young, determined individuals,” he said. However when they failed to pit him for fresh tyres, he was left helpless on track and was swiftly passed. He let fly at them over the team radio as he was left on old tyres for the closing stages and swiftly fell from first to fourth place in a race won by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.

This was a risk but it proved inspired, the hard tyre was quicker than expected and Hamilton made the most of it. Intending to go long they did so and then switched both Hamilton and Russell to the hard tyre to one-stop and make it to the flag. It was made more so as, until those final moments, Mercedes had played a blinder to put him in real contention against the faster Red Bulls and Ferraris. Over 90 minutes after the finish Hamilton spoke to the media having had time to calm down and regain his equilibrium. This season had been a trying old slog for Lewis Hamilton at best and his frustration and disappointment at the Sisyphean task of repeatedly wrangling a recalcitrant Mercedes has been palpable. What was most noticeable as these tense moments played out and Hamilton saw his chances slipping away was the unusual virulence of his reaction.

As the race progressed, it looked like Verstappen would have to overtake both Hamilton and Russell on a tight circuit. But, soon after, Russell demanded soft tyres too and his team listened, now putting him third and leaving Hamilton a sitting duck on his eight-lap-old medium tyres. You can either pit Lewis, lose track position against Verstappen, and leave George out - screwed. Hamilton, having calmed down slightly, praised the mechanics and the team's result, with Mercedes now appearing Red Bull's main challengers. "First of all, Lewis is ahead. "That was the biggest **** up," said Hamilton on team radio.

Nothing could deny Max Verstappen’s Spa surge as he charged to a ninth Formula 1 win of the season, while yet more bad luck and questionable calls mired Charles Leclerc. Team mate Perez was sent into the pits for hard tyres on Lap 41, emerging P7 and right in front of Alonso, but the Mexican soon found his feet and began to turn up the pace, passing hard-shod Norris on Lap 44. The race resumed on Lap 50, hard-shod Verstappen leading Hamilton by over 12 seconds while Russell was in third, five seconds ahead of hard-tyred Leclerc. Perhaps a Virtual Safety Car would be called – a reprieve for Leclerc and Verstappen in the face of two swift Mercedes. With Mercedes putting on a show of pace on their hard tyres, both closing in on Leclerc, Verstappen was asked for his take on the strategy. Hamilton was then pulled in for a set of hards on Lap 30, releasing Verstappen back into the lead as the Mercedes driver emerged ahead of a now medium-shod Sainz. Verstappen responded to Leclerc’s stop on Lap 19 – losing time as he was stationary for 3.4 seconds – and emerged around four seconds ahead of the Ferrari while Hamilton led Russell. At the start of Lap 36, Hamilton closed in on Perez and the Mexican locked up heavily in defence of P3 into Turn 1. As Russell retook P6 off Norris, the top six was unchanged by Lap 5 – but Hamilton was gaining on Sainz in the chase for P3. Almost miraculously, he continued on in last place and reported that the car was okay – and there was no Safety Car either. Hamilton ended up fourth at the flag as Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez – the former held back by a calamitous Ferrari pit stop earlier on, before a five-second penalty for an unsafe release in a later stop – battled late on for P5. A huge roar, and it was lights out for this 72-lap duel on the dunes. In that restart, Verstappen swept past the Mercedes for the lead, with Russell and Leclerc following suit to pry Hamilton away from the podium.

You go through all the procedures so it's nice, of course, to see all the crowd and the craziness and I appreciate it a lot but I think also, as a sportsman, you focus on your job, right? As a racing driver and where we are at the moment as a team, we want to win. MV: Not real weaknesses but we know at some places where we are stronger than others, we know on a high downforce track that it's a bit of a more difficult situation to get the best out of our package. And then of course, after the race, you take it all in and of course, this was a very special weekend for me, to see, all of these fans come out and support me. But I think I don't need to tell anyone in the team, the motivation we have, to always try to improve and to win races, even when we win races, we still want to do better. And also, today we will look at a lot of things that we can do better but I think that's what you always need to have, that kind of approach, always wanting to do more, wanting to do better, because that's how you stay on top because if you stand still, of course, people at the end will overtake you. And then we went out and we were clearly lacking a little bit of pace on that Hard compared to the Mercedes cars on the Medium. If we continue to qualify P6 and P8 as we have done in the last two race weekends, we're going to really struggle to win a race. MV: I have to say, when I swapped to the Medium, of course, I was catching them, which is normal because I had a newer tyre, they were still doing good lap times, I have to say. But then, of course, with that late Safety Car, we could switch back to the preferred tyre, the Soft one, and we could get back into lead. MV: Yeah, I mean, before that Safety Car I thought it was OK to the end with the Hard tyres, even though we were a bit slower. I know you take one race at a time and you never give up but what is your feeling now in the championship challenge?

“I 1,000 per cent believe we have the right team in place. 👊 Big thanks to the team for continuing to push and to the fans for creating a mega atmosphere. “And then the safety car came through and fricking emotions were all over the place. “To all the mechanics, fantastic job today,” he said. “They were the best pit-stops of the season so thank you for the continued efforts. Verstappen breezed past Hamilton before the first corner, to the delight of his home crowd.
The Dutchman pushed his way to a 10th victory of the season while the Silver Arrows took a questionable gamble and the Prancing Horse lacked pace.
He said, in part, “I was just on the edge of breaking point with emotions and my apologies to the team because I don’t even remember what I said, I just lost it for a second. So you’re in the pit and there’s no tyre in a normal race. With just seven races to go, Red Bull holds a 135-point lead over Ferrari and the Silver Arrows are just 30 points behind the Prancing Horse. Because I took avoiding action, they give you a penalty – I find this very frustrating and I’m going to speak with the FIA now because I don’t understand it.” The lack of pace, though, is the larger problem to focus on compared to a botched pit stop for Sainz, Binotto said to Sky Sports F1. “We tried to react simply to stay ahead of him which was the best way to keep track position, because we knew Lewis was very fast in the first stint of the race. The Spaniard remained stationary for a lengthy first pit stop after the left rear tire was not prepared in time. A series of cars dove into the pits, looking for any advantage in the final stretch as the safety car neutralized the race. AlphaTauri’s chief engineer of vehicle performance, Claudio Balestri, revealed that the problem was a “car failure” in the team’s post-race release. However, just a few corners later, Tsunoda came to a stop and retired from the race. At first, Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto felt it was “an unlucky situation” for Leclerc, who pitted just before the VSC. The Japanese driver stopped on-track and complained about his tires not fitting correctly, only to be told by AlphaTauri that all was well.
Lewis Hamilton apologised to his Mercedes team after a radio rant during the Dutch GP, which was won by Max Verstappen.
So it was worth taking the risk." "He had a tyre that was five laps old, the medium, holding position was the right thing to do. "Lewis was ahead, so you always have a little bit longer with the call [for those behind]. We discussed at the moment, are we taking risks for the race win? Yes, we are taking risks. We were quicker than most [teams] at many points.

Team by team analysis of Sunday's Dutch Formula One Grand Prix at Zandvoort, round 15 of the 22-race season (listed in championship order):
Vettel had a slow first pitstop and picked up a five second penalty for ignoring blue warning flags when he came out of the pits in front of Hamilton. He was reprimanded for driving back to the pits with loosened seatbelts. Tsunoda triggered the virtual safety car when he stopped with a mechanical problem after earlier suspecting a wheel had not been fitted properly. Magnussen had a close encounter with the wall on lap two, skimming across the gravel and back on track in last place. The seven times champion pitted on lap 29 for hards and aiming for a one-stop strategy. He went second when the Ferraris pitted and took the lead when Verstappen came in on lap 19.

He lacked race pace compared to Leclerc and Verstappen and was easily passed by the Mercedes later in the race.

OPINION: Audi's arrival in Formula 1 for 2026 was confirmed on the eve of the Belgian Grand Prix. After a flawless Belgian Grand Prix, Max Verstappen and Red Bull were given a tougher time on the opening day at Zandvoort. Just 0.021 seconds had split Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc in qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix on Saturday.
The Dutch Grand Prix resembled a three-day rave interspersed with occasional motor racing, though the on-track action didn't disappoint the lively crowd.
[Daniel Ricciardo](/daniel-ricciardo/) and Lewis Hamilton. In its second year back on the calendar, it may still have a few problems to sort out, but the atmosphere was nothing short of spectacular. For a brief moment I stopped and remembered the pandemic, which temporarily made this kind of event impossible, which grounded me around the noise. [Lewis Hamilton](/lewis-hamilton/) at Silverstone. I briefly saw McLaren team principal Andreas Seidl and we tried in vain to exchange words over the cacophony. [This finally provoked complaints, and we were met by some of the promoters at the track and escorted through the crowds to some buggies. Later I walked back into the motorhome paddock (which in Zandvoort is split into two) the music started blaring from around the circuit. Though the organisation was somewhat chaotic, the shuttles had at least proved reliable for timings, and got me home in 30 minutes the night before. Fans had already descended on the circuit and the sea of orange was a challenge to fight through. [I was aware there were three media shuttles scheduled for the morning, 6:30 am, 8:30 am and 10:30 and two in the evening at 19:00 and 21:00. Smiling as he casually strode in, sat down and removed his sunglasses, I noticed how intensely he listened in the relative quiet of Red Bull’s vast motorhome. Hamilton was leaning on the bar worktop, casually chatting with his team mate George Russell, as the sliding doors parted and we entered.
The home fans got what they wanted on Sunday as their hero Max Verstappen clinched victory in a dramatic Dutch Grand Prix – but it wasn't all smiles for ...
But a slow stop with a front jack issue dropped him out of contention for points, while Kevin Magnussen couldn’t recover from a kiss with the wall on Lap 2. However, his race unravelled when he felt something wrong with the car and he stopped out on track. A fine result, inspired by strong pace and a bullish call for softs during the Safety Car period, in what was his 75th Grand Prix. Russell’s second place was Mercedes’ 12th podium of the season, and leaves them just [READ MORE: ‘There is something wrong we need to address’ admits Binotto after tough Dutch GP for Ferrari](https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.there-is-something-wrong-we-need-to-address-admits-binotto-after-tough-dutch.6aIqFYTY8OAoBSBBXYNShe.html) This was the first time Verstappen has won four races in a row. But on a track which should have suited the F1-75, Ferrari couldn’t compete with Red Bull – or indeed Mercedes – on Sunday afternoon, and he lost yet more ground to championship leader Verstappen. He has now gone nine races without scoring. Only championship leader Verstappen is on a better streak. George Russell has become known as “Mr Saturday”, but in 2022, he’s been more like “Mr Consistent” on Sunday. [30 points adrift of Ferrari](https://www.formula1.com/en/results/constructor-standings.html) and very much in the hunt for P2 in the constructors’ championship. Victory was his 10th in 15 races this season.
Max Verstappen wasn't about to let anyone spoil his party in the Netherlands, but there were mixed fortunes elsewhere at Zandvoort.
In Zandvoort he bumped along in the the bottom three in all the practice sessions so it wasn't a huge surprise when he missed the cut at the end of the first round of qualifying. On Sunday, he briefly peaked in P10 during the first round of pit stops but then got stuck in a DRS train in 15th behind Mick Schumacher. Getting through to the final round of qualifying and lining up in the top ten was a welcome surprise and a decent achievement in the circumstances.
