We're looking back on some great games from the past before the teams meet again this weekend.
Perhaps the only positive aspect of this game was the now legendary image of beanpole Marco Materazzi leaning on the shoulder of the elegantly suave Rui Costa looking on, the two opponents unified in disappointment as they gazed at a sea of fire and smoke. Milan came into the second leg of this tie with a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Jaap Stam and Andriy Shevchenko. For once, the title was not at stake but rather the teams were playing for a place in the Champions League semi-finals. The 2000-01 season was a messy one for the club: Berlusconi was absent chasing political dreams and Cesare Maldini was put in temporary charge of the team after Alberto Zaccheroni was dismissed. Inter’s disaster in the derby was partly foreshadowed by the Milan ultras in the stadium. Marco Tardelli was trying to lift the club after Marcelo Lippi had been dismissed for losing to Helsingborg in the qualifying round of the Champions League. Their fans had expected them to challenge in 1949-50 but they had started the campaign poorly, losing to Juventus and drawing with Como and Lazio in the build-up to their meeting with Inter. Now it was time to treat the supporters to a winning goal. They would go on to finish third in the 1949-50 season, behind Juventus and Milan, but they approached this derby with high hopes. Silvio Berlusconi’s helicopter had not yet descended on Milanello and the club had already been relegated twice in the 1980s: after the Totonero betting scandal in 1980 and because they simply were not very good at football in 1982. Europe was still feeling the effects of the second world war and, in Italy, football and economic growth would be linked for decades. Few contests in world football match the Derby della Madonnina for passion, style, aggression and class on the pitch.

AC Milan came from behind to claim a 3-2 Serie A win over local rivals Inter Milan in an entertaining Derby della Madonnina on Saturday evening.
He not only got a good goal but helped Inter create all sorts of problems for AC Milan in the second half, nearly securing a smash-and-grab draw. In the 64th minute, Dimarco came on to replace a horrible Alessandro Bastoni, and the impact was evident. He got forward well to give Calabria plenty of problems in the channel and was involved in a few nice interplays as he provided the assist for Dzeko after an intelligent run. Martinez was anonymous for a big chunk of the match as, without the presence of a Dzeko or Lukaku, he looked like a lost cause. Dumfries struggled to produce the goods on the right wing, as he was involved in a heated battle with Hernandez, whose physicality and persistent fouling stifled his pace and inventiveness. At other times, he looked lackadaisical and ineffective in the final third. However, he was at fault for two of Milan’s goals, while his positioning was questionable when he allowed Giroud far too much space in the box, and the French striker man made Inter pay. It was easily his poorest performance in an Inter shirt for a long while, and it looked like it was coming in his recent performances because of his error-prone nature and reduced athleticism at 30 years old. De Ketelaere has been a breath of fresh air at San Siro, but he had an average game here, with some bright moments in between the game. Tonali was in incredible form and looked lively as he surged forward with purpose and finesse, operating in a dynamic box-to-box role. He also lost track of Dzeko on a cross, allowing the striker to cut the deficit in half. But he came out on top at a crucial point in the game.
Best man on the pitch, Rafa stars in the derby and scores twice.
In the 3-2 win at San Siro, Rafa was a nightmare all evening for the Nerazzurri defence, who struggled to contain the 23-year-old, and last season's Serie A MVP. And last night, his performance was by far the best of them all. [Rafael Leão shined in the derby](https://www.acmilan.com/en/match-center/g2302486/lineups) last night after a dazzling performance and is unquestionably the game's MVP; it couldn't really have been anyone else.
