The Minister for Education Norma Foley TD today announced that adjustments will be made to the assessment arrangements for students due to sit State ...

These adjustments were arrived at through discussions between the Department of Education, the State Examinations Commission and the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, and key stakeholders. I am confident that the adjustments announced today acknowledge the disruption faced by these students as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in a proportional manner, ensure fairness and equity for students, and are educationally appropriate. These adjustments will play to student strengths by leaving intact the familiar overall structure of the examinations, while incorporating additional choice for students in the examinations.

Breda O'Brien: Botched Leaving Cert reform is worse than no reform (The Irish Times)

Announcement of change without extensive consultations about a modular exam is predictable and demeaning.

There are aspects of the current Leaving Cert English exam that could be changed and not a tear would be shed. A meaningful exam at the end of the fifth year could develop these skills of expression, analysis and synthesis. An exam at the end of fifth year could help many boys (and some girls) to focus. As Conradh na Gaeilge discovered in documents released under Freedom of Information legislation, this was sought as a quick win for the Department of Education. For example, a four-hour philosophy exam is a compulsory part of the Baccalaureate. People have strong opinions about the Leaving Cert because it has been a rite of passage for generations.
