Ciara Quaid never filled in a CAO form – but three years on from leaving school, she says, “I'm in the best job ever”.
She says she also learned “a lot about injuries and what to do when things happen. “I probably wouldn’t be in the position I’m in if it wasn’t for Dunboyne,” Ciara acknowledges. It was back to school for Ciara after that, but this time she was definitely not sitting in a classroom. She has completed two stages of the British Horse Society (BHS) exams, which allows her to teach children to ride horses, unsupervised. It meant I wasn’t going to be sitting in a classroom the whole time.” Ciara always knew “my career wasn’t going to be sitting in an office” and wanted to work outdoors.

The lack in demand for examiners is one of the primary reasons and another one being the lack of clarity regarding how many students will be sitting a set of deferred exams next months, the marking of which will require additional time. A number of factors have led to a delay in announcing the date for the examination results. Around 130,000 students nationally sat the exams this year, an increase of 7,000 since the last time a full set of examinations was sat in 2019.

It will cover the period from the release of the results to the end of the CAO first round. The 2022 Leaving Certificate results are said to be at least as high as last year's record-breaking set of results, raising concerns over the use of random selection for courses with high points.
If a candidate is disappointed with any of their grades, they may want to consider appealing a result, or even more than one.
A record high number of Leaving Cert students in Laois are set to get the results of their final secondary school examination later than usual.
Covid-19 necessitated the introduction of calculated grades in 2020 and 2021. A further 52 students were expected to complete the Leaving Cert applied course. Joseph’s Girls National School, and Scoil Phádraig Naofa, St. The delay was also due to the Minister for Education's commitment that the overall set of results in 2022 will be no lower, in the aggregate, than the 2021 results. In 2019 a total of 939 pupils sat the Leaving Cert exam in Laois - up from 904 in 2018 and 875 in 2017. A record high number of Leaving Cert students in Laois are set to get the results of their final secondary school examination later than usual.
Record-breaking grades do injustice to students by not properly recognising their academic ability.
He also said employers and universities needed a reliable set of Leaving Cert results in order to help measure a student’s academic ability. In the meantime, he said the university was working hard to link homeowners with students to boost the number of beds under the rent-a-room scheme. In addition, he said there was a risk that inflated grades do not give students a true sense of their ability. “We were going in the other direction pre-Covid and our retention rates were getting better. A university president has called for a return to normal Leaving Cert grades as soon as possible in order to protect the integrity of exam results. In areas like medicine, Prof Ó hÓgartaigh said, the high volume of students securing top grades made it difficult to differentiate between students last year.
Turn2Me says that said that parents can struggle if they're unhappy with their children's leaving cert results, or if the children themselves are unhappy.
Talking in depth on this outing is not necessary, sometimes people just need to move their bodies and take a few big, calming gulps of fresh air. "So many people will be in the same boat as you." Fiona explained, and encourages people to use the Turn2Me services if they are in a negative headspace. If you're feeling disappointed, please sign up for our professional mental health services - that's what they're there for." Turn2Me, a national mental health charity, is urging students across the country to use its services when they get their leaving cert results tomorrow ...
“It’s important to emphasise that today, there are so many other options available to people. The charity stated that the leaving cert results should be celebrated, and young people should be praised for all their hard work. Turn2Me stated that most young people put a lot of study and hard work into the leaving cert and their hard work should be acknowledged. The charity also encouraged young people to spend time with a loved one or a friend, if they’re feeling disappointed in their results. The charity stated that young people might be feeling happy, disappointed, or overwhelmed with their leaving cert results but may need support to manage their mental health during this period. The charity stated that some students may be disappointed, but that there is always another option if young people aren’t happy with their results – they might consider a different course, a different career path or even repeating.
Class of 22 was first cohort in three years to sit full set of examinations following pandemic measures.
As soon as they receive their results, students who have applied for a third-level place through the CAO will invariably seek to convert their Leaving Cert results into points. For those who receive their results today, the focus will quickly shift to next week and the first round of CAO offers which are due to be released next Thursday at 2pm. The CAO had 78,162 college applications this year which sits just below last year’s all-time high of 79,303. An increase in the number of candidates was another factor, and there was also an increased demand for examiners which proved a challenge to meet again this year. The hybrid model was dispensed with for this year and the Class of 22 became the first cohort in three years to sit a full set of Leaving Certificate examinations. A total of 60,210 candidates registered for the Leaving Certificate examination this year and 3,173 candidates registered for the final year examinations in the Leaving Certificate Applied.

The SEC engaged Educational Testing Services (ETC), a US-based non-profit expert in the educational testing field, which also assisted with last year’s accredited grades, to advise on the design and implementation the post-marking adjustment. SEC chairman Pat Burke said the results met the commitment that candidates would not be disadvantaged when competing with the class of 2021 or previous years for opportunities in further or higher education or employment. The SEC said it was done “in a manner that is fair and equitable for candidates”. The type of statistical adjustment employed is commonly used across the field of educational measurement . The same post-marking adjustment was applied to the Leaving Cert Established, Leaving Cert Vocational Programme and Leaving Cert Applied. All 61,000 exam candidates receiving their results today had their marks adjusted upwards to ensure grades overall were no lower than 2021.
Leveling the playing field for the class of 2022 creates an identical problem for next year's students.
Many students and parents complain about the delay between the release of Leaving Cert results and the first round of CAO offers. Why did the Minister make this offer to students if it was not going to improve their chances from among their fellow Leaving Cert cohort? Students will receive these results when they log on to the State Exams Commission (SEC) portal from 10am this morning.

280 students sat the Chinese exam and 87% of them have been awarded a H1. More than 61,000 students sat the exams this year. The fact that this year’s results had to be adjusted to compare favourably to last year’s was another significant factor in this delay. This year's outcomes are no lower than those of last year at an aggregate level, and the SEC said that the grade profile at each level is similar to that of 2021. The commitment that this year's aggregate results would be no lower was given to students by Minister Foley following significant student and political pressure earlier this year. The uplift was carried out in order to fulfil a promise made to this year’s Leaving Cert students by Minister Norma Foley that their results would, in aggregate, be no lower.

Sec did 'post-marking adjustment' in bid to meet Government commitment that students would, on aggregate, do no worse in 2022 than last year.
It meant these grades were then adjusted, with greater weight given to those at the lower end. It was the State Examinations Commission's role to ensure grades were no lower this year than last. It continued to skyrocket across the board in 2021, where students had the ‘two-track’ option of written exams and accredited grades. No one had marks downgraded under the system. One of the biggest jumps was seen in maths, where 18.1% of students got top marks at higher level compared to 15.1% last year. While more students also got top marks in Irish at higher level in 2022, the proportion getting top marks in English fell.

University president calls for end to grade inflation to protect integrity of exam results.
The scale of the adjustment was greater among lower marks and smaller among higher marks in order to match last year’s results. Just over 61,000 Leaving Cert students are due to receive their results from 10am online on Friday. The State Examinations Commission used a “postmarking intervention” to increase all students’ marks to bring them into line with the 2021 set of results. This led to an increase in about 50 per cent of students’ grades this year. However, the move to keep grade inflation at last year’s high level has sparked calls from university leaders for a return to normality as soon as possible in order to protect the integrity of the Leaving Cert. Tens of thousands of Leaving Cert students’ grades have been adjusted upwards by exam authorities to bring them into line with last year’s record-high set of results.

The admissions officers for the medical colleges will now sit down and look at the places they have and the CAO merit lists for medical courses and allocate places. Q: I think I’ll get enough points for my course in NUI Galway, but accommodation is impossible to get. Go to the college website and check the entry and subject requirements for your course. A: On the 6th of September she will have access to the component marks for her Art paper. Are you near the top marks in a grade band or are you near the lower end of the grade? Once the place is deferred the procedure to take up the place the following year is secure. A: The deferral procedure in the CAO allows a student to defer a place until the following year if the college allows this. He has since learned of another course that he would be interested in – is it possible for him To apply again through CAO even though he has a deferral pending? My query is , if I am successful with this year CAO and accept, can I pause current course and take a year out, in case I decide to return next year ?
