A number of factors have led to a delay in announcing the date for the examination results. Child psychotherapist Joanna Fortune has some advice for anyone who wants to support a disappointed student this week.
Ensure you have time, space and capacity to be physically and emotionally available to curl up on the sofa and watch a movie together or to be available to provide support. Ahead of and after the results, check in honestly with your feelings because sometimes the disappointment is ours, not theirs, and we need to own that. Ensure that you celebrate their efforts and join them in their joy.

The charity suggested that parents sitting with their child can be helpful, as they receive their results. As soon as they receive their results, students who have applied for a third-level place through the CAO will invariably seek to convert their Leaving Cert results into points. For those who receive their results today, the focus will quickly shift to next week and the first round of CAO offers which are due to be released next Thursday at 2pm. The CAO had 78,162 college applications this year which sits just below last year’s all-time high of 79,303. An increase in the number of candidates was another factor, and there was also an increased demand for examiners which proved a challenge to meet again this year. The SEC engaged Educational Testing Services (ETC), a US-based non-profit expert in the educational testing field, which also assisted with last year’s accredited grades, to advise on the design and implementation the post-marking adjustment. SEC chairman Pat Burke said the results met the commitment that candidates would not be disadvantaged when competing with the class of 2021 or previous years for opportunities in further or higher education or employment. The type of statistical adjustment employed is commonly used across the field of educational measurement . The SEC said it was done “in a manner that is fair and equitable for candidates”. The same post-marking adjustment was applied to the Leaving Cert Established, Leaving Cert Vocational Programme and Leaving Cert Applied. Overall, following the marking process, the results were lower than 2021, when students had a choice of exams or accredited grades based on teachers’ marks, or both – if they had both, the were awarded the higher grade.

Congratulations to the 63000 Leaving Cert and Leaving Cert Applied (LCA) candidates receiving their results.
So, there are plenty of grounds for optimism. It all had an enormous impact on teaching and learning, and the effect on student mental health and well-being has also been well documented. That’s for another day. More than three in four of the class of 2022 have applied to CAO and most of those will move on to take up a preferred course. Because of the pandemic, this year’s candidates suffered serious upset to their education, and to their lives generally. Congratulations to the 63,000 Leaving Cert and Leaving Cert Applied (LCA) candidates receiving their results.
