Ireland take on Finland in a crunch World Cup qualifier this Thursday. Here's all you need to know about the match.
We’re in the middle of a qualification campaign, maybe you feel it’s the end, but to me it’s the middle. They’re a very good team that were in the Euros. There is at least, in my feeling, we need to win this next game, then we have the game against Slovakia and then hopefully we have play-offs in October, and then we might need to go in February to New Zealand. This is what the World Cup qualification campaign, Vera Pauw’s managerial reign and everything good that’s happened since the players’ strike has been leading up to." And Sean O'Connor has looked back at the last play-off Ireland were involved in, when they faced Iceland over two legs for a spot at Euro 2009. "Destiny’s giddy embrace awaits Ireland in the familiar warmth of an expectant Tallaght.
A win tonight would seal a World Cup qualifying play-off spot for Vera Pauw's side.
Such a result would bring Ireland one step closer to their first-ever major tournament. Ireland create an encouraging attack as Heather Payne attempts a cross towards the Finland goal. Vital interception from Megan Connolly to put the ball out for a corner. Denise O’Sullivan gets on the ball but credit to Finland, they surround her and force a turnover. McCabe gets a word from the referee after a slightly over zealous tackle but there’s not much in it. Ireland try to release Payne down the middle but her path is blocked off. Brosnan continues with the kickout. It results in a corner which McCabe takes. Finland have brought the pace of the game down slightly after a good patch from Ireland. Another corner and this time it’s Connolly who comes up to take it. Brosnan to the rescue after a shot takes a deflection off Campbell. But there’s too much air under the kick and it sails over the crossbar.
The game will be shown live on RTE 2, where coverage starts at 6.30pm. The match will also be available to stream for free via the RTE Player. Betting odds.
Promoted Stories A win means Ireland will earn a play off to the World Cup. Ireland welcome Finland to Tallaght Stadium and won the away game earlier in the campaign.

A full stadium, a team on the up, the country mad for them to do well. Straight after, Megan COnnolly had to slide in to clear for a corner on the other wing. They backed off a bit too readily and Finland almost got in around the back on the right flank but a great tackle by Campbell and it’s Ireland’s goal-kick. We’ll see how they shape up when the game gets going obviously but the clear implication in that team is that Katie McCabe is going to be given a more front foot role tonight. Courtney Brosnan flapped at the cross and it had to be cleared off the line by Katie McCabe. Heather Payne skipped in behind on the right and though her cross was hacked, Megan Campbell found herself in space. The corner floats to the back post where Quinn nods it back for Diane Caldwell to head off the crossbar. 23 mins: Decent stop by Courtney Brosnan in the middle of her goal. But the ref blows for a Finland free - the ball was out when Quinn headed it intially. Littlejohn got hurt on the first minute and hasn’t been a factor. Needed a cleaner header but she draws a good save from the Finnish keeper. 44 mins: Good period of Irish pressure, with Agg at the heart of it.
Live updates from Tallaght Stadium as Ireland face into their critical World Cup qualifier against Finland.
Ideally, the Slovakia game won't be especially consequential, if Ireland can hold out here. Rantala has just dinked a rather hopeful cross in the general direction of no one - except for Courtney Brosnan who can scamper out to claim. Jess Ziu is booked for somewhat needlessly booting the ball away, the affronted looking French official swiftly brandishing a yellow.
1. Brosnan;. 7. Caldwell, 4. Quinn, 6. Connolly;. 17. Finn, 10. O'Sullivan, 8. Littlejohn, 5. Campbell;. 2. Ziu ...
And what a cracking ball played in by Megan Connolly. All came from McCabe's bravery in the challenge a couple of minutes ago. But because Koivisto was booked and then hurt herself in the challenge, she had to leave the field for treatment. The Fins huffed and puffed but couldn't find their way past a resilient Irish defence. Katie McCabe was as gutsy as ever and took a huge clatter to win a free-kick inside the Finland half. In the first half in particular, Finland looked a cut above and Ireland struggled to keep up with the away side's fluidity.
Lily Agg's winner was enough for Ireland to seal a World Cup playoff berth, with a 1-0 win against Finland sealing the deal...
Her efforts were key as Ireland sealed an important win. Was withdrawn in the 85th minute to widespread applause. Was a driving force at left wing-back in the game, with her deliveries into the box being Ireland’s only real attacking threat. Good tackle to deny a promising Finland attack early on as Ireland’s goal lived a charmed life. 📻Radio – 📺Watch – Megan Campbell – 7 Megan Connolly – 7 📱Updates – [https://t.co/yjIWAZ2p6o] [pic.twitter.com/SGIimafH78] [https://t.co/aR8cFzAlWf] [https://t.co/R6bK3NAZZ4]
Think of Ireland playoffs and its usually Iran, France, Denmark – or further back Belgium and Turkey – that springs to mind.
More about that anon if it comes into play. – Ireland need Norway to win or draw.– Ireland need Norway to win or draw. Otherwise, the other six get paired at next Friday’s draw into three one-off deciders at the semi-final stage.
