The Capture Series 1 Recap: Was Shaun Emery Innocent ... (Den of Geek)

As gripping BBC surveillance thriller The Capture returns for Series 2, here's what you need to remember from last time. Spoilers!

As CIA boss Jessica Mallory ( [Famke Janssen](https://www.denofgeek.com/movies/x-men-famke-janssen-reckons-the-original-cast-are-done-now/)) told Frank, they needed Eli’s plan to get a certain way along so it would reach the right online message boards and infiltrate the right groups. The plan was to get Shaun arrested on the basis of the footage and attract a lot of media and public attention. [correction](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/teleprompter-interview-the-capture-callum-turner-holliday-grainger/)… Frank had Hannah murdered and her body planted in the boot of a car Shaun was found driving. That blackmail, along with the assurance that Shaun and his daughter would both be looked after if he went along with it, convinced Shaun to make a false confession. Hannah would be hidden away for a few days before emerging safe and well to reveal that that the footage used to charge Shaun was fake, thereby exposing the practice of correction and getting CCTV-based convictions including Faisal’s overturned. As Shaun saw it, justice had simply caught up with him, because he knew that he really had unlawfully killed the unarmed insurgent in Helmand and that he shouldn’t have been acquitted in the first place. [Laura Haddock](https://www.denofgeek.com/tv/tom-riley-and-laura-haddock-interview-da-vincis-demons-man-of-steel-2-cannibalism-more/)) and Charlie (Barry Ward) were secretly working with the Pilgrims of Justice to expose a process known as “correction”, which they’d discovered had been used to convict a client of theirs named Faisal. Sycamore had earned Rachel a promotion from Counter-Terrorism to Homicide, where she was made Senior Investigating Officer in the disappearance of Hannah Roberts, working with DS Flynn (Cavan Clerkin) and DS Latif (Ginny Holder). [Poltergeist](https://www.denofgeek.com/poltergeist/), the shower in [Psycho](https://www.denofgeek.com/psycho/), little girls with long, wet hair in… Hannah was one of the barristers who’d worked on Shaun Emery’s retrial and was last seen on CCTV being assaulted and dragged away by Shaun hours after his release. So began a cat-and-mouse game that saw Rachel gradually realise that Shaun was telling the truth and that she was being lied to by her bosses, including Commander Danny Hart (secretly an MI5 operative), with whom she’d been having an affair.

The Capture season 2 review: Thriller loses it at invisible assassins (Metro)

Writer Ben Chanan has tried to raise the bar from the excellent first series, but in doing so he's stretched credibility to breaking point.

I’m as paranoid as the next 21st century apocalyptic, but even I draw the line at invisible assassins. But in doing so he’s stretched credibility to breaking point. Exactly how this is done is left a little blurry but go with that flow if you can because The Capture does paint a convincing picture of how compromised any notion of the truth has become when it comes to talking politics.

BBC The Capture series 2: Cast, plot and when it is on (WalesOnline)

Paapa Essiedu plays Isaac Turner MP · Indira Varma plays Khadija Khan · Ron Perlman plays CIA Chief Frank Napier · Ginny Holder plays DI Nadia Latif · Ben Miles ...

Entrenched in the UK’s own ‘Correction’ unit, DCI Rachel Carey (Grainger) finds herself in the middle of a new conspiracy - with a new target. The Capture returns to BBC One at 9pm on Sunday, August 28. Their bond will be further explored in the second series. Returning to the lead role of DCI Rachel Carey is Holliday Grainger. The official BBC synopsis explains that “Britain is under siege: hacked news feeds, manipulated media, and interference in politics. Also returning for series 2 is Ben Miles, who plays Commander Danny Hart. Comic book aficionados will recognise Perlman as Hellboy in the two original films from Guillermo del Toro. Ben (Chanan) has written one of the freshest and most prescient scripts of recent times and I can’t wait to see what this incredible cast and crew can do with it.” The Capture explores the mad-capped world of digital intelligence and surveillance. On joining the new series, Essiedu said: “I’m so excited to be coming on board with The Capture. Reprising his role as villain, CIA Chief Frank Napier, is Ron Perlman. This led to a follow-up series being commissioned and three years later, it is finally here.

The Capture series two review – implausible, daft and thoroughly ... (The Guardian)

Conspiracy theories and Chinese spies abound as Holliday Grainger and Paapa Essiedu star in the return of the slightly silly TV thriller.

Even more risible is our other hero, security minister Isaac Turner (Paapa Essiedu), who has the aura of a more elegant, less consummately sociopathic In series two, DI Carey has been promoted to S015, the very security unit suspected of being behind the frame-up. DI Carey found that the footage showing Emery killing the lawyer had been digitally faked as part of a conspiracy going right to the heart of the state, and perhaps Even Further. And yet, by the end of series one, DI Carey could not stop Emery getting sentenced for six years, leaving her colleagues suspicious that she was part of the conspiracy to frame Emery for Reasons Unclear. Plot wise, this scene establishes Grainger’s rogue detective as can-do, maverick and deadly as Dirty Harry with the hair-trigger temper of a young Eric Cantona high-fiving a Crystal Palace fan with all the toes of one foot. Here, we are to believe that a Chinese tech company in cahoots with Beijing’s autocratic faux-communist politburo is pitching the British government to install facial recognition software at our airports to improve security.

Its risks were highlighted in season 1 when soldier Shaun Emery (Callum Turner) was wrongly sent to prison for the death of Hannah Roberts (Laura Haddock). But the tide appears to be turning for Rachel, courtesy of the Isaac Turner case. Running alongside that, DCI Rachel Carey (Holliday Grainger) spends most of the first episode grumbling about her new role in mapping, with murders and high octane action swapped out for road repairs and street lamps. "No, I haven't joined them, you big bloody idiot," she says to Patrick (Cavan Clerkin) while he's laying comatose in a hospital bed. Or has Rachel, for all her mettle, bitten off far more than she can chew? Shortly after Isaac's frosty exchange with the London CEO of Xanda, Yan Wanglei (Rob Yang), an unpublished news report from a fringe publication lands in his inbox claiming that the MP has a secret love child in Lagos, which he strenuously denies.
