Tour Championship final-round updates - McIlroy in mix (RTE.ie)

Follow the action from East Lake as Rory McIlroy challenges for his third FedEx Cup title.

Having overcooked his second shot, which landed at the back right of the green, he then produces a wonderful chip that allows him to save par. He falls three shots behind McIlroy and Im. After his wedge runs narrowly past the hole, he putts for a bogey 5. Is it now a two-horse race? Scheffler fails to take advantage, his putt well off target. McIlroy takes the lead and it could have been even better.

"I got a little lucky with Scottie (Scheffler) not playing his best golf today, and I took advantage of that with my good play. McIlroy hit the pin with a chip from the back of the 16th green and poured in from eight feet to save par, which was enough for the solo lead when Scheffler did not get up and down from the sand, while Im recovered from a double-bogey at the 14th to birdie the 15th and 17th to get within one. A close-range birdie at the eighth was enough for Scheffler to edge back ahead until McIlroy rolled in from eight feet at the 12th to get to 20 under, with Im a shot off the pace after cancelling out a bogey at the eighth by picking up a shot at the par-three next and birdieing the 12th.

Separated by six strokes before they teed off, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler had wildly varying rounds. It led to a captivatingTour Championship ...

McIlroy was tied for the lead with three holes to play, but found the bunker on 15 and - adrenaline pumping - shot over the green. He birdied the 8th to reclaim his solo lead, but McIlroy joined him on -21 after a birdie on 15. In the end, he needed a solid bogey putt to minimise the damage. For Scheffler, he had led all week and was now one back with two to play. Both men bogeyed the first hole of their final round but, while Scheffler continued to struggle, McIlroy got back in his third round groove. McIlroy began his final round six shots back from Scheffler, the world number one.

Ulster man overturns six-shot deficit to become the first player to win the FedEx Cup three times.

A brilliant birdie on 15, a stunning par save on 16 when the American bogeyed; it was vintage McIlroy and gave him that one-shot cushion which he took to the clubhouse and the title. It was in marked contrast to the quality the pair displayed in finishing their thunderstorm delayed third round earlier in the day. It was the 12th occasion that McIlroy has won on the PGA Tour when trailing entering the final round, three more than any other player since 2010.

McIlroy started the day six behind but came back to win the PGA Tour season-ending Tour Championship.

I believe in this tour in particular, I believe in the players on this tour. Roared on by a vocal following, McIlroy was left with a straightforward challenge on the 18th following a Scheffler par. With remarkable composure, McIlroy hunted him down and drew level heading for the back nine before taking the lead on the 16th.

Rory McIlroy makes FedEx Cup history with stunning success (Irish Examiner)

McIlroy carded a closing 66 at East Lake to finish 21 under par, a shot ahead of Sungjae Im and Scottie Scheffler.

McIlroy was not about to throw in the towel though and holed from 30 feet for birdie on the 15th and saved par on the next after flying his second shot over the green from a fairway bunker. Scheffler responded immediately with a birdie on the eighth and although McIlroy got back on level terms at the 12th, the Northern Irishman bogeyed the 14th after missing the green with his approach. Playing together in the final group, McIlroy and Scheffler both bogeyed the first and while Scheffler also dropped shots on the fourth and sixth, McIlroy birdied the third and made three more in succession from the fifth for a share of the lead.

Marvellous McIlroy storms back to claim third FedEx Cup (RTE.ie)

Rory McIlroy overturned a six-shot deficit on the final day of the Tour Championship to claim a record third FedEx Cup title and $18m in prize money.

Even the guys that went to LIV have had to deal with a lot. It doesn't make it that much easier to get over, but it’s great to end the season on a high note like this. It’s the greatest place in the world to play golf, bar none, and I’ve played all over the world. I feel sort of bad that I pipped him to the post. I told him we’re one-all in Georgia this year; he got the Masters, I got this. "Firstly I want to say I feel like Scottie deserves at least half of this (trophy).

After Scheffler was unable to chip in for birdie, McIlroy just needed to two-putt for par to secure victory. But my good play and Scottie's not-so-great play, and it was a ballgame going into the back nine." Both McIlroy and Scheffler bogeyed the first hole in the final round, but while Scheffler continued to slip, McIlroy steadily rose. Hitting first, Scheffler found a bunker short and right of the green. With one hole to play – and an $11.5 million difference between first and solo-second place – McIlroy maintained the slight edge. He got within a shot of the lead before a double bogey at the par-4 14th. Im was also in contention through much of the final round. The Northern Irishman made four birdies over the remainder of his opening nine to turn in 3-under 32. For good measure – and good memories – he was five back to start the 2019 edition, which he eventually won for his second career FedExCup title. I guess it just shows you anything's possible, even when you're a few behind or a few in front in the tournament," McIlroy said. "Six behind on the first tee on Thursday and I was 10 behind on the third tee. Scheffler and Xander Schauffele, in the final group and separated by one shot, were in the 13th fairway when play resumed.

Rory McIlroy can't stop, won't stop daggering LIV Golf lawyers (GolfDigest.com)

The prince of the PGA Tour won't EVER let LIV Golf lawyers live down the hackneyed way they described the FedEx Cup in court earlier this month.

McIlroy also got another dig in on LIV Golf during the presser when he noted that it wasn't until the 70th hole of the tournament that he actually was leading for the first time all week. All kidding aside, there was a point during his Tour Championship press conference where McIlroy started to express true frustration about the LIV situation. In turn, golf Twitter had a field day with what was characterized as an out-of-touch description of the postseason by the attorneys that also wasn’t convincing to the U.S. Well, in case you don’t remember, Robert Walters, a lawyer who represented LIV golfers Talor Gooch, Hudson Swafford and Matt Jones in their court hearing earlier this month seeking an injunction to gain access to the PGA Tour’s playoff events, had described the FedEx Cup as “the Super Bowl of golf" and the hardest trophy to win. On Sunday at East Lake, McIlroy enjoyed another gratuitous moment at the expense of LIV Golf. I feel sort of bad I pipped him to the post.

“I have a whopping one week off coming up and then I go to Europe for three out of four weeks,” joked McIlroy, who will play the DP World Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship, in England and head back to St. A backdoor second at the Masters—thanks to a closing 64—was followed by a solo eighth at the PGA and a T-5 at the U.S. “As much as I’m a willing participant in all of this, I sometimes do need to reboot myself for the sake of my golf game.” He pocketed $5.75 million for his share of second, to go with the $14 million he amassed from four PGA Tour titles this year, which included the Masters. “Every chance I get, I’m trying to defend what I feel is the best place to play elite professional golf in the world,” McIlroy said. It doesn’t make it that much easier to get over, but it’s great to end the season on a high note like this. McIlroy still got himself into a share of the 54-hole lead with Viktor Hovland, but faded to third place, his putter betraying him once more. The tour’s top players will play in the same events, and more of them, starting in 2023, while being rewarded for their efforts. “When I get inside the ropes, no one can get to me.” For his 22nd PGA Tour victory, McIlroy shot a final-round 66 to finish at 21 under par. ATLANTA — For Rory McIlroy, playing golf has been the easiest part of a truly tumultuous 2022. Being the standard bearer for the PGA Tour in its battle with LIV Golf has been the challenge.

I believe in the players on this tour," McIlroy said in the trophy presentation. Scheffler badly misread a 10-foot birdie chance on the 17th to tie, sending the TOUR Championship to the final hole with $18 million on the line. "I've had a really great year and I wanted to finish it off with a win here, and unfortunately I wasn't able to do that." McIlroy holed a 31-foot birdie putt on the par-3 15th hole to tie for the lead. Scheffler, who birdied four of six holes Sunday morning to finish the third round and build a six-shot lead, lost it in the first seven holes. McIlroy won $18 million prize to go along with the trophy.

You still have to play a controlled round of golf and be disciplined, but there's still a way to marry being disciplined with shooting a low score, and that's what I did over the last couple days.” I don't think you can be overly aggressive because you can put yourself in some bad spots, especially with the Bermuda rough and how unpredictable that is. “The golf course is the golf course. I'd like to be a couple closer to the lead. “I haven't been in that position before, but it'll be a little new,” said Scheffler. “It's a perfect way to end the round.
