The Line of Duty star on being impetuous, his red-faced moment in a swimming pool and why he'd like to be Davina McCall.
What is the trait you most deplore in others? What is your most unappealing habit? What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? Married with a daughter and stepson, he lives in London. He stars in ITV’s new detective series Ridley. In 2012 he was cast as Superintendent Ted Hastings in Jed Mercurio’s BBC drama Line of Duty which has run for six seasons.
THE CHANCES of Adrian Dunbar not fronting a major TV drama after his Line of Duty Super Ted Hastings success were as likely as Edinburgh's bins…
And a slap in the face to Nadine Dorries. The satirical news show helped boost the profile of Boris Johnson in the years before he became PM, allowing him to play the seemingly shambling journalist. But does this explain all that he does, as Dr Joe crosses the line between the dark and the light? In The Suspect (STV, Monday, 9pm) Turner keeps his shirt on, but this time around his character is even more moody-broody. Another actor who was a shoo-in to front his own series is Poldark star Aidan Turner. And it should work well for viewers who love their police series’ to feature as many tec’ tropes as a writer can wedge into a script.

Dunbar is taking the lead role in a new crime drama, playing DI Alex Ridley who, after 25 years of working on homicide cases, has retired from the police force.
“We’re so excited to be teaming up once again with the inimitable Adrian Dunbar, bringing to life Paul Matthew Thompson’s characterful and engaging scripts,” says Fisher. “Jonathan and I worked closely together on the very successful series Blood, and I’m confident we can bring some of that magic to Ridley. “Ridley has begun shooting and we really couldn’t be off to a better start,” remarked Dunbar from the set in Lancashire back in January.
The new series is inspired by real life retired detectives who rejoin police forces in a consultancy role.
Dunbar also confirmed he will be starring in a film called, Emily, that will come out in October. When asked if there will be a new series of Line of Duty, Dunbar replied: "We're [the cast and writers] going to have a curry and we are all really keen to see each other again. In a statement, Dunbar said of the exciting new drama: "I don't think I've ever headed into a production with more excitement and enthusiasm. When we [the producers] were talking about this, I said it's going to be in Lancashire, it's going to be the winter, it's going to be cold, we're going to be up in the dales. An ex-colleague comes to see him, to tell him about a piece of evidence that has come up in a case. The colleague comes to warn up that this piece of evidence will come back to him. "We really would like to do something else but we don't know if we are. We agreed really quickly on the songs we should do." You meet Alex at a very difficult time in his life because just over a year ago he lost his wife and daughter in a house fire that he feels slightly culpable for because he wasn't there at the time. So the idea came to us that we set the jazz club up with a friend of his. The new series is inspired by real life retired detectives who rejoin police forces in a consultancy role. Speaking on This Morning, Dunbar said: "It's a big responsibility your name in the title.

Line Of Duty star Adrian Dunbar is back on our screens in ITV series Ridley. Here he talks about the struggling detective and what lies ahead for him.
So I think the relationship with her is great. So therefore, there isn't friction between them because ultimately, I think that they both know that they just want to solve the case. And I think there is that quality about him. He finds it very difficult, and I suppose getting back to work is the start of a healing process. So yes, I think that is an element. She's always been somebody who he tells what to do, and she's always followed his advice. I think he doesn't have a line. So I'm hoping that as the series progresses, you'll see a progression in him sort of returning to himself. He's lost his wife and daughter in a terrible house fire that he feels guilty about, because he feels that he could have done more to stop that. That is something that is an ongoing storyline through the series that resolves itself a bit in episode four. Dealing with life and loss, Alex Ridley is drawn back into his previous world when his quaint town is disrupted by the seemingly unprovoked murder of a local farmer. Can you tell me a bit more about that, and your thoughts on his process throughout the series?
Ridley is ITV's new moody detective series. Plus: The Capture returns with brilliant new cast member Paapa Essiedu. Here's everything to watch this evening.
By the second half, her mother Phyl (Celia Imrie) decides to stay put in England as Sam returns to LA – and this show’s last ever scenes. But now that viewers know what the unit’s use of “correction” is (doctoring CCTV footage to ensure convictions in terrorism cases ), can the series stay as gripping across this six-episode run?

Ridley is set across Lancashire and northern England unlike many other crime dramas that are set in London. As writer Paul Matthew Thompson says: “That particular area, the Yorkshire-Lancashire border, gives a sense of isolation. She added: “It has a unique flavour of being set in the north of England. We’ve got snow, we’ve got rain, we’ve got sleet, we’ve got gale force winds, over the whole series, which is perfect.” There’s a fierce pride, and people are sometimes insular and guarded. We filmed in the winter, so it was cold, and it was bleak. I think every murder that we investigate, there is epic rain, epic wind – there’s a different element in every episode. According to eyewitnesses, there were a number of extras dressed up as barristers for the scenes, which were shot at Bolton’s most famous landmark. Dunbar was also complimentary about the location shooting up north, saying: “There were some really interesting areas that we went to, and some beautiful places as well. He explained: “I didn’t know Manchester; I didn’t know the areas around Manchester.

"I thought if he's running his own club with the wonderful Julie Graham, who’s an old mate, then that would feel kind of right... "Subsequently, we contacted Richard and we found three of his songs that we really liked, because I thought they really suited my character. I also wanted a place within the show every week that you’d go to that was a bit warmer and a bit more glamorous." I came across Richard Hawley, who I didn’t know, and started listening to his songs," recalled Dunbar in an interview released to press. And then I did some research regarding jazz and the north of England and so forth.

We’ve mimicked the relationship between Carol and Ridley” Adrian said: “There was a huge sense of responsibility. But these things are all the more wonderful when they happen later because I think you’re in a better place to deal with it and also more likely to have learnt how to make the part work. For all his strengths, moral core, bluster and honesty, where women were concerned, his personal life was in bits. He said: “I might be doing something with Neil Morrissey, who’s an old friend of mine. “I think people responded to that aspect of his character, and certainly, Ridley is in a pretty sad place.”

And I think that element really works." Adrian spoke to Express.co.uk and other press about showcasing his musical talent in the series. In the series, Ridley listens to jazz music on a vinyl turntable and is an accomplished performer in his own right. As he returns to the force to help his former apprentice with an investigation, he is battling with the loss of his family.

But it's also got a kind of Boston/New York feel as well." "It's probably the best place for him to be." At one point even playing with an Elvis Presley impersonator - "for a while", smiles the actor - he goes on to note that "when jobs weren't coming in thick and fast in my early 40s, I started the band again". But what can you do to set yourself apart and what can you do to make it different?" "He's a complicated character," reflects the actor. It's got a different feel to it - set in the north of England, in the Yorkshire Dales and the Moors. "I think they've got a gorgeous friendship that sometimes is a bit father-daughter-like - and sometimes much more friendship-like," adds Waugh. "I just had a baby when I did this - he was five months old when I started. (With) Ted, most of the time you saw him within a very tight "There's so many crime dramas around at the moment.
