It is impossible not to feel sorry for Rutherford, who perhaps knows how costly his dismissal will prove to be, and looks furious with himself on returning to the dressing room. It all builds up to a do-or-die clash with Dagenham on the final day of the 2020/21 season. It all feels lovely and upbeat, so naturally something has to go terribly wrong for the whole thing to really work. Perhaps not, but he is a very likeable character and his value to the new owners is obvious. Even so, from the very beginning, it is clear this documentary was at the heart of the pair's thinking when deciding to take the reins at The Racecourse. The show has obviously been made for an American audience, as evidenced by the way they talk about relegation, a concept which clearly still manages to baffle many of our transatlantic cousins.

If you're looking for a documentary that captures the highs and lows of football, though, and the lives impacted by the sport, then you'll be pleased to hear Welcome to Wrexham places its namesake front and centre. "Beautiful on the outside, and just...shit." Amongst all of this, of course, is the game itself. We go back in time to 2020, to the perplexing headlines about McElhenney and Reynolds being interested in the club's purchase, followed by the public's reaction as the news ripples out into the local community. The series is similar to Greg Whiteley's Netflix doc about U.S. Meanwhile, while we simultaneously get to know players, coaches, and the people who run things back in Wales.

That is the intention. Wrexham have earned worldwide publicity since the A-listers took control of the club in February 2021 and Parkinson says the club and the area's profile will be raised even higher as a result of the documentary. Club staff, players, and coaches were last week treated to a special screening of the documentary ahead of the worldwide launch and Parkinson believes it will be a hit.
