How to help stray cats in your area (Wales247)

Many people think to call the RSPCA for help when they see a healthy stray cat in their neighbourhood but the charity, whose focus is on rescuing animals who ...

They may talk to you about giving a helping hand by providing food, water and outside shelter to help protect mum and kittens from extreme weather, however, if they appear sick or injured please contact your local vet for advice. If you’ve found a pregnant cat, unless she appears to be sick or injured, there’s usually little to worry about. Rehome the cat – Taking responsibility for the cat yourself is a fantastic way to help a stray cat. If these methods don’t work out, a local cat welfare volunteer might be able to visit to scan for a microchip. If this applies to you and your neighbours, it is worth agreeing between yourselves who is responsible for the cat and for ensuring their welfare needs are met. It’s important to try and find the owner of any cat you think may be a stray – including placing a paper collar on a cat, creating ‘found’ posters and advertising on social media and other online resources such as Animal Search UK.

At first it was just one cat who ventured into a room and then bolted out in sheer panic after seeing what had become of its human. But rather than just take the kitty's word (via body language) that something terrible was happening just beyond the door, the second curious cat couldn't resist and decided to investigate. Two kitties were none too pleased when they discovered their human friend had suddenly grown a cat face.

Dog owners take more risks, cat owners are more cautious – new ... (The Conversation AU)

A series of studies found that exposure to dogs leads people to make riskier financial decisions, while interactions with cats have the opposite effect.

For example, we asked 225 people to view four print ads featuring either a cat or a dog and then decide how to allocate a $2,000 investment, as in the previous study. We plan to examine other possible effects of pets on people’s decisions and behaviors. In another study, we wanted to get individual-level data, so we used an online survey tool to recruit 145 owners of either a cat or a dog – not both. The reason dog ownership seems associated with more COVID-19 cases, for example, could be that dog owners take more risks – or they simply have to take their pets out for walks more often, which means greater exposure. For example, we found that people in states with a higher share of dog owners, such as North Dakota, had a greater prevalence of COVID-19 infections in 2020 than states with more cat owners, such as Vermont. Dog owners tend to take bigger risks and respond more to reward-oriented advertisements.

Is your cat sick? How to recognise early signs of illness in your feline ... (Hindustan Times)

Cats at times hide signs of sickness and one has to pay close attention to them to notice if they are not doing well.

You will notice it more easily if your cat has otherwise been healthy. In such cases, notify your veterinarian right away and schedule a check-up or telemedicine visit. Cat owners must also keep a watch on a few things in general, just to stay safe. Cats have a habit of concealing their illness and agony by acting as if everything is great. Even cats probably find "cat people" disturbing (Big Think)

People who rate themselves as highly knowledgeable about cats are more likely to interact with cats in ways they don't like.

However, participants who rated themselves as more experienced and knowledgeable (a.k.a., “cat people”) were no more likely to follow best practices than others. “Participants were encouraged to interact with the cat as they normally would, with the exception of picking them up. Participants were also asked to remain in their seated position for the duration of the test, which effectively enabled cats to avoid human-interactions if they desired.” “Cat people” don’t follow cat rules.
