Meryl Streep Never Thought She Would Be A Working Actor Past 40 (/FILM)

Meryl Streep has been nominated for more Oscars than any other actor, but she thought her career would be over at 38.

This was not playing a witch because it was the only part she could get because of her age; this was tackling one of the most sought after parts in the musical theater canon. The year she turned 60, she had both " [Julie & Julia](https://www.slashfilm.com/847267/meryl-streeps-julie-julia-character-isnt-quite-who-she-seems/)" and "It's Complicated." Whether she was aware of it or not, Meryl never really went for the movies that linked her worth to her appearance. She could play a goofy scene like her being incredibly high as she talks on the phone to Chris Cooper's character, and people could connect to the comedy of it without being confused as to why Meryl Streep was the one doing this. As Meryl Streep was basically the only woman who never stopped getting lead roles, she could use that reputation and clout to come in as a legacy movie star. One the one hand, she starred in "The Hours," the Best Picture-nominated drama that won Nicole Kidman her Oscar. Go all the way back to [Margaret Hamilton](https://www.slashfilm.com/852272/how-the-wizard-of-oz-changed-margaret-hamilton-and-her-stunt-double-forever/) as the Wicked Witch of the West in "The Wizard of Oz" โ€” she was only 36. and got another Oscar nomination for her performance in "Evil Angels" (released as "A Cry in the Dark" in the US), which you probably know as the "dingo took my baby!" Anjelica Huston was exactly 38 years old when she starred in "The Witches," as was [Angelina Jolie](https://www.slashfilm.com/618130/the-best-angelina-jolie-movies-ranked/) in "Maleficent." This was for the film "Ironweed," in which she starred alongside the also-nominated Jack Nicholson. Even if these movies were tremendous (and a couple of them are) the knock on them would always be that Meryl Streep wasn't funny. The breadth and complexities of the characters she has played on film, stretches back to her earliest performances in the 1970s like "The Deer Hunter" and "Kramer vs.

These Actresses Over 60 Have Better Careers Than They Did When ... (TheThings)

Ever since Meryl Streep was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in The Deer Hunter, she has widely been considered to be one of the most respected actors ...

Of course, it also has to be noted that Mirren has been nominated for and won a slew of different awards after she turned sixty. Amazingly, it wasnโ€™t until after Helen Mirren turned sixty that she won an Academy Award for her performance in The Queen. Since the year 2017, when McDormand turned 60 years old, five movies she starred in have been released. In fact, there even are some female actors whose careers got better after they turned 60 years old. On top of that, Yeoh definitely should win a slew of awards for her work in the movie. After all, despite how much potential a project may have, everything can fall apart in the execution. Despite that, Mirren has somehow managed to further cement her legacy as an all-time acting great. Just like Mery Streep, Glenn Close has been one of Hollywoodโ€™s most respected actors for a long time. Technically speaking, it may be a stretch to include Michelle Yeoh as a part of this list. She went from portraying the girl next door to being a total badass. In an ideal world, the only things that would decide whether or not someone succeeds in life would be skill, hard work, and determination. Sadly, in the real world, that simply isnโ€™t the case.
