Shanahan stormed through as an automatic qualifier after finishing in a time of 2:01.15 to clinch third place and a spot in tomorrow’s final. Mawdsley then completed the job with a brilliant run in the final leg. The team of Israel Olatunde, Mark Smyth, Colin Doyle and Joseph Ojewumi made a strong start after Ireland’s new 100m record-holder Olatunde took them through the first leg. There will more Irish interest in the championships later today. Becker gave Ireland a brilliant start with an assured run in the first leg. Healy complimented that run on the second leg and Adeleke maintained that lead on the third lap to put Ireland in a strong position heading into the final run.

The former UCC student qualified third in the 800m final after putting on a fab display in her time.

The 25-year-old was trained as a young athlete by her father Ray, who was an Irish national champion in the 1,500 metres. Promoted Stories Louise Shanahan was the Irish 1,500m champion in 2021 - making them the first father and daughter to become national champions in the category.

Leevale runner holds on for third in semi-final but men's 4x100m drop the baton in their heat.

New national 400m record holder Rhasidat Adeleke was in a good position when Healy handed over to her and duly cashed in, powering into a commanding lead by the time with a phenomenal third leg of 49.49. Home favourite Majtie Kolberg pushed Shanahan close to the line with a season’s best 2:01:20 but ran out of track as the Leevale athlete secured her place in the final. Shanahan was in fourth at that point.
