Bad Sisters Is a Wickedly Funny Crime Dramedy With Big ... (TIME)

Catastrophe creator Sharon Horgan's new Apple TV+ show asks: who (if anyone) killed the Prick?

But the pleasure of Bad Sisters is in the execution (no pun intended). [The Luminaries](https://time.com/5938055/luminaries-review-starz/)), the free-spirit youngest Garvey, who practices massage therapy and dates a lot of disappointing men. [Big Little Lies](https://time.com/4722273/big-little-lies-finale-review/), this is a show that’s less about whodunit (if anyone) than it is about a community of women supporting each other through complex, sometimes outright tragic experiences. No one suffers more from his acidic temper than his wife, Grace ( [Sex Education](https://time.com/5492639/sex-education-netflix-review/)’s Anne-Marie Duff), a meek woman who absorbs constant physical and emotional abuse in the name of love. “When I can’t see any of them”—her sisters—”in you.” What we don’t find out, as we’re getting to know the Garveys, are the details of JP’s demise. The only way out of this mess, for Tom and his half-brother Matt (Daryl McCormack, recently great in As Grace and the couple’s tween daughter Blánaid (Saise Ní Chuinn) mourn, the other Garvey sisters, who range in age from 30ish to 40-something, slink around the wake drinking, speaking ill of the dead, and looking over their shoulders. In a role that echoes his fellow Scandinavian and Northman co-star Now floundering in the aftermath of Claffin père’s death, the company simply doesn’t have the funds. [The Northman](https://time.com/6169663/the-northman-review/)) is an objectively terrible person. So, when JP perishes under bizarre circumstances and his death is nonetheless ruled an accident, it doesn’t seem unreasonable to wonder if they might secretly be responsible.

Sharon Horgan on Why 'Bad Sisters' Turn Bad (Nexttv)

Bad Sisters, a mix of dark comedy and drama from Sharon Horgan, debuts on Apple TV Plus August 19.

His journalism has also appeared in The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Playboy and New York magazine. Dearbhla Walsh directed the first three episodes, and directed on Fargo too. He hosts the podcasts Busted Pilot, about what’s new in television, and Series Business, a chat with the creator of a new program, and writes the column “The Watchman.” He joined B+C in 2005. One of the sisters has an abusive husband, and the sisters come together to protect their sibling. Horgan called Fargo a major influence on the project. The series is inspired by a Belgian show called Clan. "He’s such an abusive monster, so we take away his dignity in death" by giving the corpse an erection, and later, when his casket slips out of the hands of his pallbearers as they aim to lower it into the grave. The producers worked hard to make the sisters “infectious good company,” according to Horgan. "It was very important to make a fool of him," she said. "I wanted him to be a real fool." Horgan felt that was an effective way to humiliate the horrible man. Something of a murder mystery, it is about the Garvey sisters in Ireland, who always look out for one another.

A brilliant ensemble cast makes this darkest of comedy-dramas a hit ... (TechRadar)

Bad Sisters launches on Apple TV Plus on August 19 – here's our spoiler-free review.

[Apple TV Plus show](https://www.techradar.com/best/best-apple-tv-shows) and ruminate over the storylines, which effectively build to a shocking and emotive climax in the final episode. There's also time for a budding romance between Matt and Becka allows a sort of forbidden Romeo-and-Juliet romance to play out – an expected plot device, sure, but one that works well in the context of this show. He’s joined by his half-brother Matt (Daryl McCormack) in crashing wakes and questioning the Garvey sisters unnecessarily, but it's this sort of slapstick subplot that actually falls a bit flat. The sisters – who we learn lost their parents in a car crash – might be branded as ‘bad’, but the real villain of the piece is John Paul ‘JP’ Williams, who's played with real menace and malice by Claes Bang. Setting the story – adapted by Horgan from the original Belgian series, Clan, written by Malin-Sarah Gozin – in Ireland was a smart touch, as the Irish sense of humour is naturally driven by a delicious darkness. Sharon Horgan: 'Bad Sisters' villain has 'every bad human trait' (UPI.com)

Sharon Horgan and co-stars Claes Bang, Anne-Marie Duff, Sarah Greene and Eva Birthistle discuss their new dark comedy/drama, "Bad Sisters.

"I seem to remember a lot of people peering into the coffin, making adjustments." "I quite like the moral ambiguity of it," she said. It was when and where, because I didn't want to belittle the subject matter," Horgan said. It's sort of funny, inherently, in its premise." "I've never made an hour of anything before, so it was all new to me." Horgan said she reduced the number of attempted murders in her adaptation. "There are only so many ways you can try and kill a man and feasibly get away with it." "Gaslighting, for example, is something that unfortunately most of us have experienced, male or female, in relationships," Birthistle said. "All of those little humanities, I think, make for more of a dangerous character because he could be your next-door neighbor or a family member." "He is the container of every bad human trait you could have," Horgan, 52, told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. Because you don't realize the freedom that lies outside of it." "With this guy, he does not know that he's vile, that he's toxic," Bang said.

Bad Sisters review – Sharon Horgan's pitch-black comedy is ... (The Guardian)

This wicked revenge fantasy about five sisters who attempt to kill a monstrous husband is wonderfully cathartic, perfectly paced and hugely witty.

He is now expanding his reach and beginning to do the same to his early-teenage daughter – policing her diet, her social life and even pocketing her confirmation money for his own use. Wittily directed (by Rebecca Gatward, Josephine Bornebusch and Dearbhla Walsh) and gorgeously shot, this is a fine addition to the growing collection of stories told unapologetically for, by and about women on mainstream television. Just as perfectly portrayed is the other sisters’ appreciation of what is happening and their powerlessness to do anything about it. Bibi (Sarah Greene) is fiercely uncompromising, Becka (Eve Hewson) is the slightly aimless baby of the family, and Grace is the only one even slightly mourning the death of her spouse John Paul (Claes Bang). With painful, pinpoint accuracy, he is shown to have been a controlling, coercive, borderline physically violent man who has spent the years of his marriage to Grace eroding her strength and her spirit. [Bad Sisters (Apple TV+)](https://www.apple.com/uk/tv-pr/originals/bad-sisters/) is an adaptation of The Out-Laws – the Belgian series by Malin-Sarah Gozin, which was [described by this here very organ](https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2016/jul/13/the-out-laws-is-this-the-blackest-comedy-ever) as “the blackest comedy ever”.

Duff felt 'responsibilities' to victims in Bad Sisters (RTE.ie)

Anne-Marie Duff has said she felt "all kinds of responsibilities" to victims of domestic abuse while filming her upcoming Apple TV+ series Bad Sisters.

She added: "It was just a balancing act, it’s something that affects the writing and affects the casting and rehearsal and filming and the edit. Horgan said the subject matter of the series is "very dark but very real and important to talk about". "It also makes you careful and makes you forensic and refuse to take any shortcuts, so you really tell the story properly, if that makes sense."

Bad Sisters review: Sharon Horgan's dark, bonkers comedy will ... (The Independent)

This new series, adapted from Belgian thriller 'Clan', introduces an enchantingly charismatic set of Irish sisters all plotting against one abusive man.

The conflict between the sisters is either comic (Eva is dismayed when Bibi complains of hunger on a JP stakeout) or the deep-rooted kind that happens when people who know each other tread where they shouldn’t. I generally favour an old-school slow leak of episodes, but even I must admit the sharp, chummy world Horgan creates here would make a terrific binge session. Becka, played by Behind Her Eyes’ Eve Hewson (Bono’s daughter), is the free-spirited baby sister who, even as an adult, suspects she’s been relegated to a metaphorical kids’ table. [Privacy policy](https://policies.google.com/privacy?hl=en) and [Terms of service](https://policies.google.com/terms?hl=en) apply. These orphaned adult sisters can’t be themselves unless they get their Grace back. JP’s awfulness is too relentless for his death to be very lamentable, and the Garveys are so enchantingly charismatic together that it’s impossible not to root for them, even when the game is homicide. Sarah Greene (Penny Dreadful) plays one-eyed Bibi, her faithful lieutenant, and Eva Birthistle (The Last Kingdom) is excruciating to watch as Ursula, a dissatisfied nurse and mother. In the second timeline, they scrabble to hide their misdeeds from a couple of pesky suits looking for any excuse not to pay out John-Paul’s life insurance policy. In other words, he has to go. He exclusively calls his wife “mammy”, even in front of company.
