When it comes to preparing for competition as prestigious as the Olympic Games, he says, it’s no longer enough to be a good rider: “We have to figure out the business side of it as well: finance ourselves, find the horse, and that’s the part of the jigsaw that we sometimes struggle with, in order to get these championship medals and have success at the highest level. Looking outwards is important, he stresses, and competing in the US is helping Irish riders to maintain their edge. He was second in a Grand Prix in Portmore in the north of Ireland; he won a class in the CSI4* Weisbaden; and jumped a clear round for the team in Rome, and the team in Knokke, and he’s been selected for the ECCO FEI World Championships in Denmark in August.” Competition is healthy, you need a top horse to jump the biggest classes so we are always looking for the next horse that can get on the Nations Cup team or take to an Olympic Games.” “My third horse is Kilkenny; he was seventh in the Olympics in Tokyo. And Cian has a wealth of choice when it comes to choosing which mounts he will bring to the show.

Five local riders will be out to make their mark in the international show jumping arena as the Dublin Horse Show gets underway today at Ballsbridge.
Jordan said: “It is fantastic to be back in Dublin with Daniel and our family and friends will be all cheering us on from the North West.” Fintona-born Jenny Rankin has also had her first international call-up with a selection of horses owned by Conor Swail and Barry O’Connor, while the Londonderry brothers, Jordan and Daniel Coyle, have returned with a full squad of horses from the USA. Niamh McEvoy (18) is the youngest star to make her debut on the international list with a selection of horses including the mare Templepatrick Welcome Limmerick, which won Balmoral Grand Prix in May and the Tattersalls 1.50 Grand Prix recently.
Max Wachman 'can't wait' to compete at Dublin Horse Show.
Wachman went on to finish third in the two-star Grand Prix aboard Ikaros. He’s also a relatively new horse for me, I started riding him at the start of the year in Florida. “Working with Cian has been great, he’s very knowledgeable and a really good coach. He’s a very experienced horse and he competed at a very high level with his previous rider, Simon Delestre. Being on the team with Cian was quite special because he coaches us.” Considering his background, it’s no surprise that the 18-year-old from Goolds Cross, near Cashel, has followed a career with horses.

So, in Nations Cups, James Kann Cruz has never knocked a fence – the only blemish being one time fault. As James Kann Cruz racked up the victories, winning Grands Prix at National and then Premiere level, rider and owners felt that he was ready for bigger things. “I’ve ridden a lot of good horses, taken part in team events, but James Kann Cruz is probably the biggest jumper I’ve had.” “Dad really wanted us to buy him the minute we saw him. He burst onto the scene at the Nations Cups in Rotterdam and Vancouver, with a combined four clear rounds. Having initially planned to buy another foal, they were so struck by James Kann Cruz that they changed their minds.
