With the break approaching it was the visitors in the ascendancy and probably could have done without the break. Nevertheless, the visitors continued to press. And just after the half hour mark, it was the home side who eventually found the breakthrough.

Rogers had the last say with the save of the game on 90 minutes, parrying a stinging drive from Kailin Barlow before the ball was scrambled clear for a corner. St Pat’s were reduced to 10 men on 64 minutes when Mark Doyle, just back from a three-man ban for his sending off in Europe, received a straight red card for catching Paddy Kirk in the head with a raised foot. After a lull, Harry Brockbank flashed a volley wide of a Sligo post on the half hour, though there was no such reprieve for the visitors a minute later as a right mix up at the back gifted St Patrick’s their goal.

Atakayi, as against CSKA in Sofia, was wide-awake to the loose ball to take it around Nando Pijanker and roll home his first league goal for the club. In a lively opening, Luke McNicholas at the other end kept his focus well to clasp Atakayi’s shot that deflected off defender Shane Blaney following Mark Doyle’s swift counterattack. After a lull, Harry Brockbank flashed a volley wide of a Sligo post on the half-hour, though there was no such reprieve for the visitors a minute later as a right mix up at the back gifted St Patrick’s their goal.

Ten-man St Patrick's Athletic put Thursday's European exit behind them with victory over Sligo Rovers at Richmond Park.

Tim Clancy’s outfit closed the gap on third-place Derry City to six points. Rogers produced a stunning save on the hour mark to deny Niall Morahan, before Doyle saw red for a high foot on Paddy Kirk’s head. Rogers was called into action in the first minute, as he denied Will Fitzgerald’s effort with a smart save low to his left.

On the dismissal, Clancy said: “Mark Doyle has never made a bad tackle in his life. After the break, they had several chances to equalise. “Joe sort of pushed us into a corner where we had to let him go. Sligo kept pressing, leaving themselves vulnerable to counter-attacks, but could not find an equaliser. We still looked dangerous on the counter-attack, even with 10 men." He was pressed into action early on by Fitzgerald who shot at the end of a driving run with Rogers happy to push it around the post at the expense of a corner.

St Pat's boost top-four hopes with victory over Sligo (RTE.ie)

Serge Atakayi's first league goal for St Patrick's Athletic gave them a 1-0 win over top-four rivals Sligo Rovers at Richmond Park.

Banks got his follow up all wrong shortly after when Rogers pushed another McDonnell blast from range into the air. The grateful Atakayi only needed to tap into an empty net for his maiden league goal. Sligo winger Will Fitzgerald worked new boy Rogers in the opening 90 seconds. Pat's finished this game without their full compliment of players after Mark Doyle was shown red on 64 minutes. Despite playing just three nights previous, both sides showed little signs of tiredness early on. But the defining moment of the contest came on 31 minutes when Atakayi made the most of a slip-up in the Sligo defence to hand a big advantage to Pat’s in the race for the top four.

Blow to European hopes as Sligo Rovers lose to St Pats (Independent.ie)

Sligo Rovers' hopes of securing European football for a third consecutive year received a blow on Sunday evening as the Bit O'Red were beaten 1-0 by St ...

Moments later, Pats were reduced to ten men as Mark Doyle’s high boot caught Kirk in the head. Banks thought he had given Rovers the equaliser after Nando Pijnaker headed it across goal for the former Stoke man. Again, John Russell’s side started the second-half well. With 11 league games to go, the Bit O’Red have a job on their hands to try and secure a European place. Doyle’s through ball proved problematic for the Rovers defence, and a mix-up between Shane Blaney and McNicholas allowed Atakayi the time and space to tap it into the back of the net, with Rovers left scratching their heads. In a very open start to the game, Pats went on the counter attack with Mark Doyle slipping Serge Atakayi through, with the 23-year-old sending his shot straight at McNicholas in the Rovers goals.
