In the end it was crossed in from the left byline but the ball hung in the air a bit so Eoin Doyle couldn't generate the requisite power to beat the goalie Will Fitzgerald whips a ball in to the back post but no one was there as Doyle had made his run to the near So cruel on Pat's who have played all of the football this half but out of nothing, Garcez partially controls a ball in to him only for it to bounce up and hit Brockbank in the arm

As it happened: St Patrick's Athletic v CSKA Sofia, Europa ... (The42)

Saints take a 1-0 lead to Tallaght Stadium with a place in the final qualifying round at stake tonight.

That is an absolute sickener for Pats. A scarcely deserved goal for the visitors and they’re about eight minutes plus stoppage time from booking a tie with Basel, who beat Brondby on penalties a while ago. Jamie Lennon and Bradley de Nooijer had some sort of exchange after the final whistle and both sets of players started pushing and shoving. There was a dink on but O’Reilly had only a couple of seconds, and maybe two touches, to decide what he was going to do with it. Winning a lot of the 50-50s and not allowing the Bulgarians to string together anything of note. Constant fouls, play-acting when they’re fouled themselves, remonstrations and theatrics to beat the band. 88′ - CSKA are seeing this game out expertly, to be fair. Busatto couldn’t hold it, however, and after the ball spilled back out to the charging O’Reilly, the 21-year-old Cork man skewed his effort wide right. Ohhh, that was a real opportunity in a game in which there have been few of them for either side. 33′ - The game has settled, and it’s very evenly matched. 1′ - Pats get us underway and immediately gain a bit of territory with a throw-in deep in CSKA territory. He had been warned for a challenge on the same player only moments beforehand. 8′ - I made a huge mistake not using the bathroom before kick-off.

St Pat's European journey ends with defeat to CSKA Sofia (Extra.ie)

Even after looking like the better team across most of the 180 minutes of this Europa Conference League tie, St Patrick's Athletic have seen their European.

The increasingly confident Forrester released Atakayi with a sublime pass. The hectic nature of the game continued after the interval. Following Anto Breslin's clearance, right-back Ivan Turitsov won the ball in Pat's half and then fired in an excellent cross to Garcez. After a perfect delivery into the six-year box, Mauricio Garcez was left completely unmarked and headed home with ease. Pat's continued to keep the ball and move in around at a good pace but were unable to make many chances, especially as the game became more scrappier with a number of fouls and stoppages. The rest of the half produced little in the way of chances, with the Saints unable to properly exploit what appeared to be a lack of pace across the CSKA backline.

Garcez controlled a cross field ball at the back post, with Harry Brockbank getting in the way, his hand raised. But Pat's then moved into the ascendancy, and looked comfortable on the ball. Billy King played in the deft pass, but Gustavo Busatto had been quick off his line, and he spread himself to keep out O'Reilly's low effort. And it only took them 12 minutes for the new-look side to draw the tie level. A corner from the left from Thibaut Vion was headed home by Mauricio Garcez from five yards without much attention from any Pat's player. Pat's had been the outsiders, even with the advantage before Thursday's game.

Jesus saves Sofia's blushes as European odyssey ends for St ... (The Irish Times)

Bulgarians progress after raucous affair ends with mass brawl and red cards for O'Reilly and De Nooijer.

Both misses proved costly as Harry Brockbank’s trailing arm denied De Jesus the chance to control and shoot with nine minutes remaining. Unfortunately, this was no red letter day, as CSKA only needed 10 minutes to square the tie. For what St Pat’s lacked beside the Bulgarians’ technical excellence, they made up for in structure and aggression. The Dublin 8 ultras swelled the non-VIP stand, needing little encouragement “to be always singing” as they basked under a blazing August sun. Jamie Lennon and Chris Forrester appeared to have been struck during the melee while several bottles whizzed past De Nooijer’s head as he was rushed into the tunnel. The Romanian referee sprinted across the pitch, as did both dugouts baseball-style, to red card Bradley De Nooijer and Adam O’Reilly as chaos descended.

But at this level in Europe, you have to take the chances that fall your way and CSKA punished the Saints with nine minutes remaining. Still, St Pat’s refused to buckle and were the more adventurous side all the way to the half-time break although CSKA were the more threatening in the final third. But the ball worked its way back to Forrester and this time Anto Breslin, from six yards, couldn’t finish the job when the ball fell at his feet. O’Reilly, such a ball of energy in midfield, had the best of those chances but hesitated just a fraction on the edge of the box allowing Gustavo Busatto to save. But CSKA were gifted the initiative and the soft concession of that opening goal was such a killer blow for St Pat’s at such an early juncture in proceedings. FINE margins and harsh lessons tend to go hand in hand at this level and St Pat’s found that out the hard way as their European bubble finally burst.

Tim Clancy fumes over penalty decision that cost St Patrick's Athletic ... (Irish Mirror)

There were angry scenes at full-time as Saints players took exception to how the visitors celebrated a narrow victory over the two legs.

Asked if he spoke to the officials, Clancy said: “No it’s not worth your while. It was chaos after the game. I have no idea why it was,” said a bemused Clancy. “It’s with pride that we go out. Their man was celebrating in front of our fans and I don’t really like that. “Again, the referee is really quick to put the whistle in his mouth and give the bigger club a decision.”

Violent scenes on the pitch as St Pat's crash out of Europe in Tallaght (Pundit Arena)

St Pats' Athletic's European dream was about to an end on Thursday night in heartbreaking fashion, with CSKA Sofia scoring a late penalty.

“The reaction they showed in front of our fans probably shows that they know coming here was going to be a tough game and they’re probably happier than we went over there getting a result. Game over for the Saints and they'll struggle to get over that one as it was there for them. At least one red card and Forrester has just been struck in the face by a CSKA player who then sprinted down the tunnel. Because after Mura, I’m sure they were rubbing their hands together thinking they were gonna play us, easy next round, get through to the playoffs. It happens.” “That’s all it was.
