Real Madrid v Eintracht Frankfurt: European Super Cup – live! (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Will Real Madrid begin their season with another trophy in the cabinet? Join Rob Smyth to find out.

David Alaba gives Real the lead from the corner! Kross curled it towards the penalty spot, when Benzema won the ball in the air and looped it back towards Casemiro near the byline at the front post. Frankfurt started brightly, with Kamada missing an excellent chance, but Madrid imposed themselves as the half progressed. The end of an enjoyable first half in Helsinki. Madrid lead through David Alaba’s tap-in after 37 minutes, and the scoreline feels about right. He took it beautifully in his stride only to punch a drive just wide of the far post. Madrid begin the second half, with no changes on either side. There are a few new signings among the subs, including Antonio Rudiger, Aurelien Tchouameni and Mario Gotze. 57 min Frankfurt have had more of the ball since half time. 48 min Toure moves forward from the back and tries to find Borre in the area. 61 min: Casemiro hits the bar! Since they took the lead they have been very comfortable. He allowed the ball to run across his body and sidefooted a shot that went straight through Trapp. It wobbled slightly but Trapp should still have saved it; maybe he was unsighted.

Real Madrid 2-0 Eintracht Frankfurt: Five-star Madrid triumph in ... (UEFA.com)

David Alaba and Karim Benzema scored the goals as Real Madrid won the UEFA Super Cup for a record-equalling fifth time.

Oliver Glasner, Frankfurt coach: "We improved compared to our last game [against Bayern], but Real Madrid have two or three great chances against every opponent in the world and then we conceded the opening goal after a corner. Thibaut Courtois, Real Madrid goalkeeper:"We could have scored one or two more in the first half and also in the second half. Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid coach: "The opening goal was a loose ball at the far post. Our plan was to try and get crosses into that specific area because our analysis told us that they were weaker on the back post generally. The European champions not only coped but excelled against a brand of football they don't usually enjoy. The game opened up as Frankfurt pressed to get back into the contest.

Real Madrid beat Eintracht Frankfurt to win fifth UEFA Super Cup (FRANCE 24)

Goals from David Alaba and Karim Benzema gave Real Madrid a 2-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt and a fifth UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday.

The match also highlighted the growing gap between the Champions League and Europa League competitions, with Madrid being the ninth Champions League team to win the competition in the past 10 years. Only city rivals Atletico Madrid have won the Super Cup when qualifying via a Europa League win in the past decade, having done so by beating Real in the 2018 edition. After the goal, Madrid stepped it up a gear and should have gone 2-0 up, with Benzema uncharacteristically dragging the ball wide with the goal begging in the 41st minute.

Vinicius thinks he's in when he collects a ball from the left, but his deflected strike is well blocked by Trapp. Real are looking strong on the eve of the new campaign as they bid to once again upset the tipsters as dark horses for yet another Champions League crown. Real and Benzema shine on the big stage once again. 18’ – REAL MADRID CHANCE! Tuta produces a magnificent block on the line to deny Vinicius Jnr after Real had carved the German side open down the right through Valverde and Benzema.
