"I think it was a gift," says Sapochnik of that opportunity, "because it gave us stuff to do. "The fun of this show is that it plays as a bit of a companion piece to the history book. Given their understanding of the underpinning history." "We're taking the approach that history in its telling changes the story. "We're taking more of the approach [of] playing with the history as it was written. House of the Dragon, on the other hand, isn't being told like a history book, but a document of the real events.

For fans of this world who haven’t read “Fire & Blood,” “House of the Dragon” has some unfamiliar names, Hightower among them. That’s part of why they brought the characters in early, to show that love — which is what makes the demise of their relationship so much more heartbreaking.” There’s a lot of growing up to do, but also circumstance and the relationships change so much that it’s like almost like we’re playing completely different people.”

“There is a hearing over a certain succession, not for the throne but for something else, that involves all the members of the cast,” he teased: We won’t get into all the gritty details, but suffice it to say that just about all our major players become involved in this dispute in one way or another. And every time we did the scene, which was about 15 minutes long, it had to end at this real moment of high tension and stress and pressure.” “It’s basically in episode seven when Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke get to go at each other for the first time in a fit of rage that’s been building for seven episodes,” Sapochnik explained. Rhaenyra still wants to succeed her father on the Iron Throne, but Alicent wants her sons by the king to be the new heirs. In her early life, one of the most prominent is a young knight named Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel). There are those among Viserys’ inner circle who vehemently oppose the idea of him being first in line to become king, most prominently the Hand of the King Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans). House of the Dragon will explore misogyny and patriarchy in depth through Rhaenyra and Alicent, according to stars Milly Alcock and Emily Carey.
Though Game of Thrones featured many strong and complex female characters, who ran the gamut from Daenerys, Cersei, Arya, Sansa, and Brienne, House of the Dragon will set itself apart in the sense that it will center on a relationship between two women. Instead of graphic depictions of violence, House of the Dragon will provide a more nuanced exploration of the inherent conflicts present in a patriarchal system. Writer and executive producer Sara Hess revealed that House of the Dragon won't show sexual violence on-screen, unlike Game of Thrones which was notorious for its depiction of rape and sexual abuse against women. But when we take away the storyline and theme of misogyny, these characters still have an arc and are still complex women onscreen. But I said it before and I'll say it again: my favorite thing about this show is that, yes, we showcase misogyny and we show how it affected the women in this world, and how it relates to these to these characters—whether it's Alicent or Rhaenyra or Rhaenys even. Despite their strong childhood bond, Rhaenyra and Alicent will eventually be at odds with each other due to a disagreement about the Targaryen line of succession, putting them on opposing sides of the upcoming civil war.
Miguel Sapochnik said the author had a "bee in his bonnet" over a Targaryen line of succession detail left out of HBO's "Game of Thrones" adaptation.
"Everybody would really festoon themselves in their house colors and be proud of them as they marched into the tournament." But as her dragons got larger, their coloring became just a subtle accent among dark black and grey scales. He wanted us to right that wrong." And Rhaegal (named for her other brother Rhaegar) was green and bronze. Viserion (named for her brother Viserys) was cream and gold. - Martin also asked them to "right a wrong" from "Game of Thrones" when it came to King Jaehaerys II.
