All-Ireland preview: Old rivals return to centre stage (RTE.ie)

Cork are bidding for a 29th All-Ireland title and a first in four years, while Brian Dowling's Kilkenny are seeking a second O'Duffy Cup in three seasons.

Hannah Looney’s decision to return from New York allows for a formidable midfield partnership with the evergreen Thompson, while the burden of scoring responsibility up front will most likely fall on Chloe Sigerson and corner-forward Amy O’Connor. Whether it has fizzed and crackled to the same level as Cork v Kilkenny is doubtful. The here and now is Cork and Kilkenny and the fact that they haven’t met in a decider in four years makes it something of a drought.

Four-time All-Ireland winner who came off bench in semi-final to get Cork over the line is ready to end county's title 'drought'

Between the players they’re missing, Cork’s suspension saga and a couple of tragedies that hit the Kilkenny camp earlier in the year, it’s been desperately tough at times throughout the season. The main thing was to get back to the final this year but unless we’re pushing over the line, there’s just no point in being there. But I don’t know the ins and outs of it and whose job it is to get these hearings in place. Only in Cork could they call that a crisis but going so long without success is a rarity for the county. “Yeah, I mean we had three weeks to get it looked after,” said Thompson. “To have two hearings was kind of disappointing in the timeframe that was there. “That was the plan because I wasn’t sure how much I would have in the tank.

Hurling or camogie, Kilkenny are never really in transition (Irish Examiner)

That Kilkenny are favourites for today's camogie final is all the more remarkable given four key players are missing.

“2020, no family, no crowds it was a weird one but I was delighted to have a part to play. It was a strange year and it was great to have something positive, even for our own families, to bring home to them. It was just lucky in the end.” In truth, there was nothing lucky about it. Even when it comes to training, you’re always trying to take one of the jerseys. A half-back or midfielder by trade - “I had a brief stint in the forwards, but I was whipped out fairly quickly!” – Murphy wouldn’t often pop up within 30m of the opposition posts. No matter what sport you’re playing, when the opportunity arises you have to take it and prove people wrong and those comments wrong. “There probably was that chat going on outside the group but everyone tries their best to stay focussed on the task ahead, and that’s take it game by game. Once you have that opportunity you have to just grab it. A brilliantly economic finisher who was player of the match when Kilkenny won the All-Ireland in 2016, Malone has added significantly to the attack. It just gives other players an opportunity to step up to the mark. If Meg Farrell was there, would I have the opportunity to play midfield? In a way, it’s a direct insult to those stepping in, though it isn’t meant as such.

O'Loughlin Gaels' Laura Murphy knows there's a big challenge ahead when the Cats take on Cork in Croke Park on Sunday for the O'Duffy Cup.

“2020, no family, no crowds it was a weird one but I was delighted to have a part to play. It was a strange year and it was great to have something positive, even for our own families, to bring home to them. It was just lucky in the end.” Even when it comes to training, you’re always trying to take one of the jerseys. I had a look back (on video). It was a right-place-right-time kinda situation. And she doesn’t know what brought her there six minutes into the second half to smash the goal that gave Kilkenny the lead. No matter what sport you’re playing, when the opportunity arises you have to take it and prove people wrong and those comments wrong. “There probably was that chat going on outside the group but everyone tries their best to stay focussed on the task ahead, and that’s take it game by game. So even in terms of strike rate, there is nothing between the teams. Cork have won five of the last six final pairings now, 2016 being the odd one out when Michelle Quilty became the first Kilkenny skipper to get her hands on the O’Duffy memorial since her manager, the aforementioned Ann Downey. The blood and bandage reached the League final but fell short to Galway, who had also proven a tad too good in last year’s All-Ireland final.

By the break it was 1-4 to 0-7 with the hard running of Mackey, Keating and Looney especially appearing to give Cork a better platform. Kilkenny had jumped from the traps early and built up a six-point lead before Cork had even scored but when that Cork score did come on 20 minutes it had a profound impact, Fiona Keating knifing through the Kilkenny defence to beat Aoife Norris from close range.

The last time it was achieved was in 2005, by Cork. And the Red Hand did it in dramatic fashion, too, with a classic final smash-and-grab performance. By then, she had met her husband Paul in Australia. Curry took up a teaching post in Monaghan and threw her lot in with Armagh, whom she helped to the Premier Junior All-Ireland final.

Then it was Saoirse McCarthy on the run and Nolan keeping Kilkenny in touch. Keating and Mackey supplemented two frees by O’Connor and though Michaela Kenneally had pointed for Brian Dowling’s outfit, in the click of the fingers, the teams were level 0-7 to 1-4. They don’t call it the most dangerous lead in the world for nothing. From there to the end of the game, they at least held their own and for large swathes of affairs, held the upper hand, troubling Kilkenny with their pace where Keating and Mackey certainly had the sirens sounding. Tiffanie Fitzgerald pointed from the very first play, before the teams had a chance to move into game configuration, which was the only reason she found herself in an advanced position. Up to then, it was all one-way traffic in the other direction, as Kilkenny broke from the traps in devastating fashion.
