"The Banshees of Inisherin" will open in Irish cinemas on Friday, October 21. The film sees Farrell, Gleeson, and McDonagh reunite for the first time since they joined forces for the instant-classic "In Bruges" in 2008. But Padraic's repeated efforts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve and when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum, events swiftly escalate, with shocking consequences.
The director and stars of In Bruges are back for a new Irish comedy-drama. Watch the trailer at Empire.
The film stars Farrell as Pádraic and Brendan Gleeson as Colm, two longtime pals living on (fictional) Inisherin island on the west coast of Ireland – until suddenly, one day, Colm declares that he no longer wants to be friends with Pádraic, whose stunned protestations only make things worse. Right from the beginning, the films of Martin McDonagh have been scabrous, excoriating, hilarious, tragic delights – from the twisted hitman tale of In Bruges, to the tangled satire of Seven Psychopaths, to the emotional depths of the Oscar-lauded Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Now, McDonagh is back with new film The Banshees Of Inisherin – and not only that, but it’s a long-awaited In Bruges reunion, re-teaming the acclaimed writer-director with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in a seemingly sweet and sad comedy-flecked drama about the abrupt ending of a lifelong friendship. In other words, a Martin McDonagh movie.

“But Pádraic’s repeated efforts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve and when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum, events swiftly escalate, with shocking consequences.” The film appears to be an adaptation of McDonagh’s unpublished play The Banshees of Inisheer, which was intended to be a part of his trilogy of Aran Islands–set plays including The Cripple of Inishman and The Lieutenant of Inishmore. Previously, McDonagh attributed the play not being staged to the fact that it “isn’t any good,” which isn’t exactly a ringing endorsement. Banshees of Inisherin follows two men, played by Farrell and Gleeson, who reach an impasse when Gleeson’s character, Colm, decides he no longer wants to be friends with Farrell’s character, Pádraic. “A stunned Pádraic, aided by his sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) and troubled young islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan), endeavours to repair the relationship, refusing to take no for an answer,” reads the press release.
