We can’t go there with any other mentality because they showed for 20 minutes in the second half that they have the quality to go and hurt us. We need to go there with the mentality of trying to win the game. The experienced Kristijan Naumovski in the Shkupi goal used every trick in the book to run down the clock, however referee Bartosz Frankowsk was on top of the antics, instructing 6 minutes of additional time to be played. Shkupi’s had a glorious chance to half the deficit when the ball was deflected into the path of substitute Adem Ali who was unmarked in the box, however, his effort was saved by Alan Mannus when it looked like being a certain goal. Despite our dominance, the Hoops couldn’t extend our lead before the break as we went in two goals to the good. Rovers won two games in one European Cup/Champions League season for the first time. Rovers have set a new record of 22 games unbeaten in all competitions at Tallaght Stadium. 20 of those were home game games, making it the longest undefeated streak at home since a run of 21 matches from 1986 to 1987. Rovers this year made their 11th appearance in the European Cup/Champions League, leaving them just one off Dundalk’s record of 12. That was Rovers’ heaviest European loss since the Hoops were beaten 4-0 by Tottenham Hotspur in 2011. This is Ronan Finn’s eighth consecutive European campaign while Sean Gannon and Sean Hoare are both on a run of nine since the 2014 Europa League with Dundalk, longer than any other player in the country. It staged the 2017 European Super Cup final between Real Madrid and Manchester United.
Shamrock Rovers host North Macedonian champions KF Shkupi in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.
Just as the pressure was building on Rovers, they are offered the welcome sight of a red card for Walid Hamidi which sees Shkupi reduced to 10. Shkupi threaten again down the left with Ali Adem at the heart of it. The last thing Shamrock Rovers would have wanted as they tried to manage the rest of this first leg with a two-goal advantage. A wonderful save from Alan Mannus now though after Pepi Gorgiev's shot deflects into the path of Ali Adem in space in the box. He gets a shot away and forces the Shkupi goalkeeper to spring to his right and palm it away. Alan Mannus palms the free-kick away for a corner. Shamrock Rovers are playing with lots of confidence and Shkupi are struggling to get a foot on the ball. A booking for the Shkupi player and O'Neill dusts himself off and is able to continue. At the other end, Graham Burke has a go from distance that deflects just wide off Ronan Finn. Shamrock Rovers stroke the ball around well as they try to pick their way through the Shkupi lines quickly. St Pat's have pulled off one of the most famous results for Irish clubs on the road by beating CSKA Sofia 1-0 in Bulgaria. Sligo Rovers though conceded early goals at Viking FK in Norway and succumbed to a 5-1 defeat. They have also urged the North Macedonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intervene and ensure the squad is allowed to fly home from Dublin after tonight's match.

Shkupi of North Macedonia have slammed the Irish government, describing the failure to fly via Dublin as a 'cheap game that has no place in football.'
There is not enough staff at Dublin airport to facilitate a return flight immediately after the game, so Rovers plan to stay Tuesday night and return to Belfast on Wednesday, as they have a league game away to Derry City on the Friday night. Their statement is inaccurate in a couple of respects: it exaggerates the distance between Dublin and Shannon, while a number of clubs have been affected by staffing issues at Dublin airport in recent weeks. Shkupi ask the Irish government to intervene and arrange a return flight from Dublin, and have also fired a warning shot at Rovers, saying their detour has fostered an anger which will show itself on the field.

Rovers had to travel out of Shannon (the airport is actually a 215km trip from Dublin) for their opening Champions League tie with Hibernians of Malta, while they weren’t able to get a charter to Bulgaria and therefore had to split the group for a nightmare journey to the first leg – involving multiple flights and a bus journey - which took another negative turn when they had to change hotel because of inadequate facilities. In the same, today our team will show you a character it is, like lions on the field, it will show that there is no team that will not bow down to such cheap games, such cheap games should not have a place in football, they should not go unpunished. “We would like to say to the Irish that they should know well that we have a very characterful (sic) team.

Shamrock Rovers' opposition KF Shkupi have released a statement condemning the "evil" inflicted upon them in the form of travel plans.
I beg your North Macedonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs that we should at least arrange for tonight’s return to Dublin. In addition, we would like to say to the Irish that they should know well that we have a very characterful team. We hope that our government will respond to this situation, with my respect to the public.” “Our team is being interfered with by making small plays in such an unbecoming manner.

“The reward of being a team is to respond as a team to the evil done to you in the same way. But Shkupi are determined to have a good night on the pitch at least and said in their statement: “We would like to say to the Irish that…we have a very characterful team. “Despite our budget, we were trying to keep our players comfortable by hiring a charter plane and paying thousands of euros to ensure that our players could make it to the Europa League in good health.

What a goal that is from Gary O’Neill! The last kick of the ball in the end, and Tallaght Stadium erupts. The Shkupi shot-stopper runs the clock down some more to boos, but we’re back in action. 60 mins - Alvarez has an effort, but it’s blocked on the edge of the box. 57 mins - Gary O’Neill lets fly from distance, the ball bouncing favourably in his favour and catching it on the half volley. Sundat Adetunji gets away at one point, but Gannon gets there first and the Shkupi man holds him back in frustration and concedes a free. First, Lyons tries to play a clever through ball, but it’s intercepted, and then, Burke flashes an excellent cross across the box, but there’s no one there. Shkupi have struggled to get a foothold on the game, really, but as I write, Mannus has just produced two more big saves — the first on Angelce Timovski’s effort. 24 mins - Burke is brought down after a rash tackle from Diene out on the left. 6 mins – Shkupi are pushing well up on Rovers, with potential gaps in behind for the hosts to potentially exploit. At the other end, Burke flashes a decent effort across goal, he’ll be disappointed not to have gotten that one on target. Rovers have spent the last few weeks wending their way around Europe again, and tonight they welcome KF Shkupi of North Macedonia to Tallaght for the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie. Rovers are once again on the cusp of groups stage football in Europe, just as they were a year ago.
The action in this game was always going to struggle to match the entertainment of the preliminaries but, while Shkupi made waves with a statement off the ...
The Hoops needed to put a foot on things, and they were helped by a rash challenge from Walid Hamidi on O’Neill which took the life out of their rally. Mannus was called into action again to keep out Shkupi sub Adem Ali, a key moment that was more about the miss than the save. It restored the advantage they held at half-time and there was enough in a strong second half rally from Shkupi to believe there’s life in this tie yet. The exuberant Tallaght crowd of 6,455 was suddenly nervous, especially when Mannus palmed away an Ali shot at the near post. The statement was not put together in Ireland. “Today, our team will show you a character,” it read, “Like lions on the field.”
Famous night unmarred by North Macedonian club's accusations of 'evil' Irish Government.
“The reward of being a team is to respond as a team to the evil done to you in the same way. Byrne continues to struggle with a hip flexor and man of the match Chris McCann limped ashore on the hour mark. Such cheap games should not have a place in football, they should not go unpunished. But that is only half the story. Today our team will show you what a character it is, like lions on the field, it will show that there is no team that will not bow down to such cheap games. “We would like to say to the Irish that they should know well that we have a very characterful team,” read the incendiary Shkupi statement.
