“The Irish Prison Service wishes to extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends at this time. He was arrested and questioned and claimed he had the gun because he was “in fear of my life”. O’Connor had been on remanded in custody in Cloverhill prison since last October but was moved to Mountjoy in February after picking up a six-month sentence for a separate offence. After the attack, O’Connor was rushed to the Mater Hospital where he was kept alive on a ventilator after being diagnosed with a severe brain injury which had been originally expected to be turned off on Monday. “There is a large number of theories being investigated about what happened including whether the victim was targeted over an alleged sexual assault that happened before he got locked up, a row that he got in the jail system, a drugs debt he may owe or whether associates of a Finglas criminal who he was allegedly on the way to target when he was caught with a gun last year are behind it. “The investigation team is in no rush in this matter because none of those involved in this are going anywhere soon apart from the prison system and gardaí have a lot of time to build up the evidence of what actually happened,” a senior source said.

Mountjoy prisoner was lured to another cell before fatal attack ... (The Irish Times)

Robert O'Connor (34), Darndale, Dublin, died in Mater Hospital five days after sustaining head injuries in group attack in Mountjoy C-Division.

Mr O’Connor’s death is the first in Mountjoy Prison for 16 years. The dead man was a drug user, was serving a sentence for a serious firearms offence and had also been involved in a dispute with other prisoners in Mountjoy earlier this year. When in February he was sentenced to six months for an unrelated crime he was transferred to Mountjoy Prison to serve that sentence. Gardaí believe a prisoner who died after a gang assault in Mountjoy Prison was lured to the cell of another prisoner for the purposes of being attacked, though the incident went wrong and resulted in his death. Gardaí were expected to gather more evidence in the case before arresting them for questioning. The attack was very brief, lasting just seconds, but the victim sustained serious head injuries.

Former prison governor says gangs and drug feuds are creating ... (Sunday World)

The former governor of Mountjoy Prison has said that gangs and drug feuds are to blame for increasing levels of violence in prisons.

“We have over 400 prisoners in what's called protection at the moment and that's a tenth of the overall prison population. “We in Ireland operate on a free association basis which means that prisoners generally can mix and socialise within the prisons. “And they have been the biggest single contributory factor to the level of violence. Meanwhile, jail sources have revealed that a number of prisoners have been disciplined for the earlier attack on Mr O’Connor and gardaí are investigating if the assault on the prison’s A-Wing is linked to his murder on the C2 landing. “This is something that has happened over the last 25 years. During the previous hundred years very few serious assaults took place in prison.
