A hiker, aged in his 60s, has died after falling 20 metres while walking near Ireland's highest waterfall in Co Sligo on Monday.
The man was found in a critical condition and hauled up 20 metres into a field where rescuers performed CPR on him for 30 minutes but they were unable to save him. Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue were alerted to the accident at around 7pm on Monday and a major rescue operation was launched with 10 volunteers responding to the call. He was walking with his partner at the time of the accident and is is believed to have sustained a severe head injury as a result of the fall.

A tourist from Galway in his 60s died after falling while walking at the Devil's Chimney area of Glencar on Bank Holiday Monday evening.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene by a local doctor and was then removed to Sligo University Hospital by a local undertaker. The stretcher was then lifted from the bank into a field and the man was treated by paramedics from the National Ambulance Service and from crew from the Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter 118 which had landed there. Sligo Leitrim Mountain Rescue PRO Henry Doherty said about ten people had responded to the missing person’s report and after an initial search of the area the man was located in a gully about 500 metres from the path of the Devil’s Chimney.
