Warner Bros' DC League Of Super-Pets receives the widest release ever in the UK and Ireland for a fully-animated title this weekend, opening in 725 ...

Vertigo is opening Emer Reynolds’ UK-Irish drama Joyride in 255 sites. Picturehouse Entertainment is debuting comedy-drama Hit The Road in 37 locations. However, a wide opening does not guarantee a large total in the eight-figure region. It is slightly behind the 743 opening sites of Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns from 2018 – a predominantly live-action film featuring animated sequences. Fellow animated feature, Universal’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru, started top with £10.4m in early July; it retook the number one spot last weekend, rising to £28.2m. DC League Of Super-Pets does not have the same franchise support as that film, although will hope to benefit from the DC name, the school holidays and the voice pairing of regular live-action collaborators Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Kevin Hart to draw in audiences. DC League of Super-Pets' director explains its startling post-credits ... (Polygon)

DC League of Super-Pets' post-credits gag features Dwayne Johnson in his starring role as Superman's dog, Krypto — and also as DC antihero Black Adam.

“We thought it would be so funny, but we were also a little bit nervous — we were like, Are you gonna be able to tell the voices apart? Most of the animal heroes in DC League of Super-Pets have at least minimal canon histories — PB, aka Wonder-Pig (Vanessa Bayer), is a reference to a Justice League Unlimited episode and an early appearance of a flying pig in Wonder Woman’s comics. Stern says his higher-ups at DC never batted an eye at League’s irreverence toward Black Adam, though, and he says he’s fairly sure the sequence came from Dwayne Johnson himself. In the post-credits sequence, set after the film’s resolution, Superman (voiced by John Krasinski) and Krypto are enjoying a Metropolis park by night when DC antihero Black Adam flies in with his pet dog. “The fact that Dwayne was playing roles in both these DC properties, it just seemed like a fun opportunity.” The animated family movie DC League of Super-Pets — an origin story for Superman’s best friend, Kryptonian super-dog Krypto — is built for adult viewers as much as for kids.

'DC League Of Super-Pets' Takes Off With $2.2M In Previews (Deadline)

That would be a super start considering Warner Bros.' DC previous entry into the animated space, Teen Titans GO! To the Movies finaled its domestic run back in ...

Industry estimates earlier have been optimistic for the film, seeing $25M-$30M at 4,300 sites, which easily would send DC League of Super-Pets to top of the weekend box office. The comp here for DC League of Super-Pets is Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s spring pic The Bad Guys, which opened to an $8M Friday and a 3-day of $23.95M after $1.15M in Thursday night previews, which Super-Pets easily beats. Last weekend’s No. 1 movie, Jordan Peele’s R-rated genre pic Nope, looks to ease 60% with a $17M-$18M take in Weekend 2. Fourth belongs to Sony/TriStar’s Where the Crawdads Sing, which grossed $1.7M at 3,650 theaters, -5% from Wednesday for a second week of $18M and a running cume of $46M. In third was Illumination Entertainment/Universal’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, which did $2.3M on Thursday at 3,816 theaters, -9%, for a fourth week of $29.3M and running total of $309.5M. That’s the average drop for a horror movie in its second session.

Box Office: 'DC League Of Super-Pets' Nabs Promising $2.2 Million ... (Forbes)

I laughed out loud several times and got a kick from hearing Reeves riff on “sad Keanu” as the Dark Knight. It is essentially “The Secret Life of Pets but co-starring the Justice League.” It also has a family-friendly cast (Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart for the kids, Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski and Keanu Reeves for the adults) and is damn enjoyable. It’s an ideal “air-conditioned babysitter” and a painless sit for adults. Minions: The Rise of Gru earned $125 million over its Fri-Mon launch from a $10.75 million Thursday. Lightyear grossed $51 million from a $5.2 million Thursday. However, it’s not usually the case for “just a new animated film” entries. Since I’m not necessarily expecting a $50-$60 million launch, I’ll note that The LEGO Movie 2 earned $34 million in early 2019 from a $1.5 million Thursday. Just this year, Universal and Dreamworks’ The Bad Guys earned $1.15 million on Thursday and went on to open with $24 million. However, this is an animated film, a non-sequel no less, so we can expect far less frontloading for the family-friendly “cats and dogs of the DC Universe” action comedy.

The Catholic News Service classification is A-II — adults and adolescents. While overcomplicated — no fewer than three different types of kryptonite are mentioned in the script and a host of Superman’s fellow characters from the DC stable put in brief appearances — their story is occasionally amusing and mostly unobjectionable. More ominously, their welfare is endangered by the machinations of Lulu (voice of Kate McKinnon), a villainous guinea pig who has managed to acquire superpowers. The Motion Picture Association rating is PG — parental guidance suggested. But their close relationship is complicated by Superman’s romance with Lois Lane (voice of Olivia Wilde).

DC League of Super-Pets movie review (2022) | Roger Ebert (Roger Ebert)

A high-concept animated film about animals with superpowers is brought to vibrant, endearing life by the superpowers behind the scenes.

Kate McKinnon joins the Phantom Zone-worthy Hall of Fame of supervillains as the tiny guinea pig (do NOT call her a hamster). Her voice is a fabulously wicked weapon of its own, with the flair of a classic-era Hollywood diva. This is a challenge as Krypto does not really know how to talk to non-super animals (parents will appreciate the Steve Buscemi “fellow kids” joke). So, when an orange kryptonite pebble hits the floor of the shelter, all the animals get super-ized. Superman is worried about neglecting Krypto as he prepares to propose to Lois, so he takes him to an animal shelter to see if he can find a friend. In present day they work as a team to keep everyone safe from bad guys, both those from Earth and those from other planets. Be sure to stay all the way to the very end of the credits for one more DC Comics in-joke featuring the man behind the voice of Krypto, Dwayne Johnson.

In a new video, star Kate McKinnon got her first look at some of the toys based on the recently released film DC League of Super-Pets.

The toys range from a variety of standalone figures for the pets themselves to combo packs that feature the pets and their respective, superpowered owners. “In the film, Krypto the Super-Dog and Superman are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime in Metropolis side by side,” reads the synopsis. Joining them are Marc Maron as Lex Luthor, Kate McKinnon as Lulu, Olivia Wilde as Lois Lane, John Early as Flash, Daveed Diggs as Cyborg, and Dascha Polanco as Green Lantern.

Plenty to keep DC fans chuckling | DC League of Super-Pets ... (HeadStuff.org)

Joseph Learoyd has a measured but overall positive response to the newest animated superhero (or superpet) feature, DC League Of Super-Pets.

No, but it manage to capture our hearts and imaginations on this journey and take us into a mind of blissful joy, and in many ways, in the world that we live in, it is a film’s ability to transport us to this serenity, that really saves us. Is it a plane? Is it a plane? The beginning act is strong and culminates in a showdown of epic proportions. It is these team interactions that push the morals of the story, each character learning to lean to their strengths, promoting each other through friendship and never giving up until the world is saved. Is it a bird?

Box Office: 'Super-Pets' Nabs $9.3 Million Friday As Ashton Kutcher ... (Forbes)

The Dwayne Johnson/Kevin Hart animated action comedy, which pitched itself as essentially “The Secret Life of Pets but co-starring the Justice League,” earned ...

That’s not enough to automatically push the Michelle Yeoh vehicle to $100 million global (it was at $95 million last weekend), but it’s a nice gesture for a surefire Oscar contender. He was a genuine “butts in seats” movie star for a decade, pulling in $15-$25 million openings for comedies (Guess Who?), fantasies (The Butterfly Effect), rom-coms (No Strings Attached), actioners (The Guardian) and toons (Open Season) until he just... Considering the previous 15 years of winners (from The Departed in 2007 to Coda in 2022), I’d argue (quality notwithstanding) that The Shape of Water, Parasite or Birdman are more representative than Green Book or Argo. I’m not saying it’s a shoo-in to win, but at this juncture, it’s far more likely to be nominated for Best Picture (and possibly win for Best Editing and Best Original Screenplay) than not. The smash-hit multiverse action/fantasy melodrama earned $196,500 (+613%) on Friday for a likely $620,000 (+558%) weekend and a new $68.82 million domestic cume. This is a case where the “narrative” will partially be determined by the weekend multiplier even if the overall weekend number is lower than I had hoped. That’s just above the $7.985 million Friday gross of DreamWorks’ The Bad Guys in mid-April (including $1.15 million in previews), which, to be fair, led to a $23.95 million Fri-Sun launch.
