The sad end of Neighbours signals the death of daytime TV's golden ... (The Guardian)

Gracing our screens for nearly 40 years, the legendary Aussie soap was one of the last shows loved by everyone from retirees and housewives to students and ...

That was the thing about daytime TV: you’d tune in out of hope of something decent rather than expectation, and if you were greeted with wall-to-wall dross, well at least it passed the time. The retiree audience is another story, of course – more loyal to broadcast television, more likely to be at home in the daytime. It’s strange to think now, in the age of streaming, but daytime TV was, for a period in the 1980s and 90s, a market worth fighting over. These days it’s hard to imagine any student opting for an ironic viewing of Homes Under the Hammer over a box-fresh season of Stranger Things or another skip through TikTok. Daytime TV’s main appeal was as a space-filler amid a dearth of other options, the opposite is true today. Digital TV and freeview, with its endless conveyor belt of syndicated shows, chipped away at the terrestrial daytime ratings, and then streaming came along to offer an even more compelling alternative: brand new primetime-quality shows that you could watch whenever you fancied. It was a strange melange to reflect the jarring tastes of those groups: live light entertainment programmes, imported US chatshows, educational TV, a flotilla of Aussie soaps and dramas (The Flying Doctors, eternal bane of all children stuck at home with the flu), gameshows, gardening shows, renovation shows, repeats of 50s US comedies and basically anything else schedulers could inelegantly cram in.

Neighbours' Takaya Honda reveals why soap is 'more important ... (Metro)

Takaya spoke to Metro.co.uk ahead of Neighbours' untimely end, revealing that the soap has saved people's lives.

I’ll probably have a trip to the UK and to LA. Seeing my family in Sydney and Brisbane is definitely on the cards because we haven’t been able to see them much in the last six years, and especially the last couple of years because of Covid. The biggest thing I’ll miss is the fortune of being given a character and storylines that mean something to people. I’ve been so lucky to have so many things that mean so much to so many people, it’s extraordinary. It’s easy to brand the show as a silly soap, and sure we can have ‘silly’ moments – but life can be silly and outrageous! I think in the last ten years, the era of Jason Herbison, Neighbours has become a frontrunner in terms of diversity of all aspects and representation – whether that be sexuality, gender, race. I literally have messages on my phone from fans to say that the storylines we’ve told have saved their lives, and it shows the importance of what we do. – but ultimately, at the core of it, the things that have been done on the show have been so much more important than people think. It’s an ideal storyline to show the ultimate arc for David, coming to some sort of a close, in a way. I know that, with the show ending, they wanted David and Aaron to have a happy ending. I think the last few weeks would’ve been a lot harder, if I didn’t have something that, psychologically, I had to delve quite far into and get excited about. Whereas this is the kind of the first storyline where it’s just been a pure joyride of a full-on crazy rollercoaster of a storyline! You might see someone staring off into the distance for a second, but they can only sit in that for a second as they have to get back into their jobs.

10 things you never knew about Neighbours (ITV News)

The final episode ever of beloved Australian soap opera Neighbours airs on Friday night. Here are 10 things you might not know about the show.

9. Since 1985, there have been eight versions of the theme tune which has been voted the world's most recognised television theme song. 6. Helen Daniels (played by Anne Haddy) is the only original character played continuously by the same actor until her own death in 1997. But she is only the second longest-serving original character; her grandson, Paul Robinson (Stefan Dennis) has been in the show since 1985 but took a near 10-year break in 1993. It was the seventh longest-running serial drama still on the air in the world as of its final episode. The soap was originally scheduled the show for two slots on BBC1: 9.25am, after breakfast TV, and 1.35pm, after the lunchtime news. The new 5.35pm slot gave the soap a new lease of life.

Neighbours: The Finale, Channel 5, review: I wept my way through ... (iNews)

As stars returned to the soap that made them famous, Ramsay Street prepared to shut down for good.

“Everyone deserves a place in the history of Ramsay Street, even those who watched us from afar. “My years living on Ramsay Street were honestly some of the best in my entire life,” gushed Margot Robbie’s Donna, while Delta Goodrem aka Nina promised she was “with you wholeheartedly in spirit”. “It certainly feels like the end of an era,” sighed Harold, as he asked Karl (Alan Fletcher) and Susan (Jackie Woodburne) to be custodians of the Ramsay Street history book that the neighbours were compiling. Kylie, in fact, uttered precisely four words, “Home, sweet home,” and “Harold!” – and the duo mainly spent their time giggling performatively like slightly unconvincing extras in a play. Clive (Geoff Paine) tried to drown his sorrows after suspecting that his girlfriend Jane (Annie Jones) still had feelings for her recently-returned old flame Mike (a show-stealing, gorgeously invested turn from Emmy-winner Guy Pearce). Stumbling home from the bar, Clive happened upon Jane giving Mike a cosy tour of the street. It was a bittersweet reminder of all the delightful absurdity we’re going to miss now that Neighbours has finally signed off after 37 years.

Sadly, few in Australia were watching and the show became entirely reliant on its UK funding from Channel 5, which we now know was a precarious position. By 2013, the show was on top form again. The Neighbours finale benefited from being plotted by a team who genuinely love the show. This was largely because Neighbours had been promoted back to mainstream station Channel 10 for the finale. Judging by some of the miffed reactions on social media this week when everyone seemed to be moving, they had us going for a while there.
