The former Roscommon boss is putting his hat in the ring for the vacant Mayo manager role.
The Mayo executive have set tomorrow as the deadline for expressions of interest in succeeding Horan who parted ways after a second four-year term in charge following the All-Ireland quarter-final defeat to Kerry. McStay, who has won provincial and All-Ireland success with St Brigid's in the 2012/13 season and brought Roscommon to a Nestor Cup in '17, had previously put his name forward for the Mayo position in 2014 when James Horan left the first time but was overlooked for the duo of Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes. As the Irish Examiner reports, former Mayo footballer Dempsey has guided his native Knockmore to the last two Mayo SFC titles and was in charge of the county's minor and U21 teams.
James Horan did a huge amount for Gaelic football in Mayo, but there was not a huge sense of surprise when he stepped away from the role earlier this year.
Rochford had his own previous spell in charge of the county, leading them to All-Ireland finals in 2016 and 2017. Mayo native McStay has applied job in the past, most notably in 2014 after James Horan's first departure. While some talented young players have come through in recent years, Mayo look just short of competing with the very best counties at the moment.

It is expected that the new manager will be in place before club championships start The two-time Connacht medal winner is also rumoured to have assembled a strong backroom team that includes the likes of Stephen Rochford, the former-Mayo manager and Donegal coach, former Mayo player Liam McHale, All-Ireland winner with Cross Molina Damien Mulligan and Donie Buckley. Mayo were well beaten by Kerry in this year's Championship and with that Horan decided to walk away from the role.
