The schedule of Day 1 of the Commonwealth Games 2022 is out. From boxing to cycling - track to squash, a lot of Indians will be in action.
4:00 PM: Scotland vs India – Men’s Triples Round 1 (Lawn Bowls) Highlights, however, would be the Indian women’s cricket team playing against Australia in what promises to be an exciting contest. Getting hands on the schedule of India at the Commonwealth Games 2022 has been a tiresome process.
The CGF insists the event is thriving as athletes prepare to compete in Birmingham, and also said it was working with Tom Daley following his condemnation ...
The atmosphere of the Commonwealth Games is always notably different to other events. With thousands of athletes having arrived in Birmingham, the sport should at least be enticing. According to Dame Louise Martin, the president of the CGF, they are working with Daley. We just had a general assembly, we heard from Birmingham, we heard from 2026, we announced that we’re going to have the Youth Games in Trinidad next year. Her organisation has tried to tackle that by initiating the first Commonwealth esports championships. Speaking before the opening ceremony, Katie Sadleir, the CEO of the Commonwealth Games Federation, was adamant that the event has not become irrelevant.
Hosting the Games has seem Birmingham dotted with new infrastructure and amenities. But the city's pioneering transformation began over a 100 years ago.
But it should not distract from the city’s innovative and experimental approach to creating healthy neighbourhoods by achieving a new kind of balance between profitability and sustainability. Further funding from the West Midland Combined Authority and Birmingham City Council will top this up to £1.3 billion. Public transport is set to increasingly displace the use of private cars, thereby reducing air pollution and traffic noise. Birmingham City Council still retains the freeholds for most of the land in the city centre today. This includes the ability to focus on enhancing the quality of the built environment. These interventions include the £705 million redevelopment of New Street railway station, completed in 2015. The city council was behind this £500m, 1.8 million sq foot office-led mixed commercial scheme and stands to benefit from additional business rates and ground rents. The city’s gradual restructuring of its economy has seen major corporate players consider the city as a suitable business location. Our research shows that this was, in fact, a Birmingham innovation. Other major corporate players have followed suit including HS2, Goldman Sachs and Microland, the Indian IT infrastructure company. The Games will thus leave a permanent legacy of their own. Cities are places to live and work.
Three of England's athletes will not compete in this year's Commonwealth Games - but one has managed to make an impact in a different way.
And with it sticks a reminder of the stains of colonialism and the slave trade in the former British Empire. But just how much of a priority is the Commonwealth Games for the elite stars? Cricket returns to the Commonwealth Games for the first time this century with a first-ever women's competition in the Twenty20 format. But this is a sporting event that can seem like a relic of the past, clinging to the association with former British colonies. The lack of future interested hosts was reflected in the need for Commonwealth Games chiefs to provide greater flexibility to local organisers in shaping the event by only mandating that athletics and swimming had to be on the programme in future. Do the Commonwealth Games have a place in the 21st century?
CWG 2022 Opening Ceremony Live Updates: Double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and men's hockey captain Manpreet Singh led the Indian contingent out as ...
Birmingham 2022 has had the kind of build-up that few other editions of the CWG had, thanks to the pandemic and, from an Indian perspective, the threats of a boycott that came in July 2019 from the IOA due to the omission of shooting from the list of events. PV Sindhu is India's flagbearer alongwith men's hockey captain Manpreet Singh in the opening ceremony on Thursday and as India expects a rich haul of medals this time, let's take a look at India's top 10 gold medal contenders. The Alexander Stadium has been the home of UK Athletics since 2011 and underwent extensive renovations for the CWG over the past three years. Women's T20 cricket makes its debut this year at the CWG and cricket itself is making a comeback after 1998. There will be a whole lot packed into the three and a half or so hours that have been allocated for this extravaganza. India won 26 Gold medals and a total of 66 medals at Gold Coast 2018, thus finishing third on the medal table. Australia's shooting governing body has launched a social media campaign to get shooting included in the programme for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and so it is not only India who are angry about the sport being ommitted. Athletes are posting photos on their social media handles and so is the Sports Authority of India. Well the ceremony has begun. If you were someone who were exposed to music from that side of the world in the 1980s, this might be a nice little moment for you. Duran Duran brings the proceedings to a loud and bright end. The Indian contingent was led by badminton star PV Sindhu, who won a silver and gold at the last CWG, and men's hockey captain Manpreet Singh, who led the team to a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

This year's Games in Birmingham comes against a backdrop of Commonwealth nations looking to remove the Queen as head of state.
“It’s very easy to look at the Commonwealth and see negatives, a waywardness in terms of its overall purpose and direction, but also see it as a reconstructed empire. The Commonwealth has been Queen Elizabeth II’s great project. That can help us imagine it and think about it in a more positive way? “We know that Charles is not as wedded to the Commonwealth as his mother. “What I have found quite reassuring about the Birmingham Commonwealth Games is the orchestrators of the events appear to be using it as an opportunity to celebrate the diversity of Birmingham.” Although there will be a strong royal presence in Birmingham throughout the Games, the Queen – who is patron of the Commonwealth Games and retains a close association to them – won’t attend in person after a number of mobility issues.
Even Thursday night's ceremony at the Alexander Stadium, where athletes paraded around a giant mechanical bull signifying this proud industrial city, followed ...
"There's definitely a huge appetite in the city. Over 40,000 volunteers wanted to be part of this and that says a lot. A number of commercial flights had to go into a holding pattern before landing at Birmingham International Airport this evening due to the Red Arrows’ fly over. Did we really need to hear that Stella and her cohort “recognise that this is Birmingham’s time for transformation” or that they “heal the hurt as the bull is revealed as a symbol of light and love”? At the Commonwealths, it pays not to ask too many questions. It would take a hard-hearted soul, at this of all moments, to deny anyone that pleasure. It is a stubborn relic of an imperial past, to which most of its audience are happily oblivious. What was the role of Stella and the Dreamers, the central protagonists, supposed to be? The Commonwealths promise to deliver a similarly escapist rush. It is a key reason why the Lionesses have been so rapturously embraced en route to their European final at Wembley on Sunday. Many of their players have gone through years of being ignored or undervalued. Up the M6, Cristiano Ronaldo was sulking about having to abase himself at Manchester United for another season on £360,000 a week. And yet this opening ceremony felt, in its eccentric way, like a timely expression of sporting purity. Nobody can argue with any conviction that the Commonwealth Games represent the apogee of athletic endeavour.
The 'love letter' to Birmingham also centred a message condemning anti-gay laws in Commonwealth countries.
Yes, people want independence but people still want to be a part of the Commonwealth Games. A city that famously boasts it doesn’t boast, might just have something to crow about in the days ahead... They only stepped in to stage these Games when South Africa’s Durban pulled out because of cost concerns. If you go into the Village and see the athletes together, it’s family, that’s how we speak and how we see each other. For too many years they’ve been held together by one woman, now 96, and this sports event. Birmingham’s quirky first-night show won’t have done any harm in that scrap.
A raging bull, Malala Yousafzai, a Brummie drag queen and Duran Duran all part of festivities.
Excitement about the Games has been building for months. It was dragged into the stadium by 50 women representing chainmakers from the Industrial Revolution. “We tried to give everything an edge. The city and wider region will provide the perfect stage for our athletes to compete.” “It feels like these games have come around at the right time for this city,” said the show’s artistic director, Iqbal Khan. “We are ready to make a statement to the world about ourselves. The opening ceremony followed the journey of Stella and the Dreamers, a group of young athletes from around the Commonwealth, through Birmingham’s history.

As Stella and the Dreamers continue their journey, they are shown the fire of the Library of Birmingham in 1879, which destroyed a number of Shakespeare's works and the building. The Queen has said we should all celebrate the "particularly special sporting event" of the Commonwealth Games as a reminder of "our connection with one another, wherever we may be in the world, as part of the Commonwealth family of nations". A look into the rules and point system of Lawn Bowls, a sport that has featured in every Commonwealth Games since 1930.
In case team A had managed to place three bowls closer to the target than team B’s closest bowl, it would have been awarded three points. The team which manages to place its bowls closer to the target wins the points for the end. The number of points awarded is determined by the number of bowls a team has managed to place closer than its opponent. On the other hand, in the multi-player formats, a team gets two throws per player. A team gets four attempts in the singles format. As the name suggests, Lawn Bowls is played on a green stretch of land.
