LIVE: Shamrock Rovers v Ludogorets Razgrad, Champions League (The42)

Shamrock Rovers face Ludogorets Razgrad, as they attempt to recover from a 3-0 first-leg loss.

The Bulgarians have sat back and only threatened occasionally. Shamrock Rovers face a tall order against Ludogorets Razgrad, as they attempt to recover from a 3-0 loss in the first leg in Bulgaria. The Bulgarians were the better team for the majority of the last week’s contest, despite an improved display from Rovers in the second half, while they will also hope to cut out the sloppy defensive errors that contributed to their downfall in Bulgaria. A reminder that should they lose tonight, Rovers will face the losers of the Shkupi-Dinamo Zagreb match in Europa League qualifying. https://t.co/zOGOgOjp1S📺 #LOI There have been some encouraging signs for Rovers in the early stages. That’s the first real attack from the visitors and a warning for Rovers. Burke flashes a low ball across goal, after good work from Greene in the build-up, but frustratingly for the Irish team, there is no one in the right area to convert. There have been signs of frustration from the visitors too, with Tekpetey in particular involved in a few incidents and is arguably lucky to still be on the pitch. Rovers get the goal that they deserve to give them faint hope in this tie. There are signs of frustration in the visitors’ game of late. Shamrock Rovers face Ludogorets Razgrad, as they attempt to recover from a 3-0 first-leg loss.

Champions League: Shamrock Rovers v Ludogorets updates (RTE.ie)

Shamrock Rovers are looking to overturn a three-goal deficit as they take on Ludogorets in their Champions League qualifier second leg at Tallaght Stadium.

Rovers have plenty of time to get those two goals but it will be hard to maintain the tempo that they played with in the first half. Ludogorets down to ten men as the midfielder catches Gary O'Neill late, stepping on the back of his ankle. Could have collected unchallenged and shows that there are definitely nerves in the team as Rovers look to close the two-goal gap.

Rovers were being fuelled by their sense of ambition and Towell was just a yard wide with a shot on the half-volley before the break. And he had a leading role in the opening goal that was coming Off the bench in Bulgaria, Burke helped change the dynamic of the Rovers performance and he picked up where he left off with a start here. But the non-stop efforts of their Rovers team was the perfect tonic to mask that frustration, only to see the players fall just short as they bowed out. But as the game wore on, and with Rovers piling on relentless pressure, they looked capable of imploding. But the sense of hope was short lived as Ludogorets, in a rare foray deep into Rovers territory, scored as the game ticked into injury-time.

Impressive Rovers make Ludogorets earn their passage (The Irish Times)

Despite a home victory over Ludogorets, Shamrock Rovers are now bound for the Europa League qualifier.

It felt like the tie could be decided by how Stephen Bradley used his bench. Every player was switched on, but Andy Lyons looked particularly sharp down the left. The onslaught was only beginning. Rovers survived and came again with Lyons turning back onto his right foot to drop a cross on Burke’s head that Padt saved one-handed, only for Aaron Greene to bury the rebound – 1-0, 20 minutes gone and Tallaght was buzzing. Rovers were their usual selves on their Tallaght turf, in stark contrast to last Tuesday’s collapse in Razgrad, with Sean Hoare composed at the heart of a three-man defence despite filling the role normally nailed down by the injured Pico Lopes. Eighteen-year-old Aidomo Emakhu, in a repeat of last year’s winner against Teuta of Albania, set up a grandstand finish by blasting Rovers second goal only for Cauly Souza to settle the tie in injury-time.

Shamrock Rovers Champions League fightback falls short against ... (Irish Examiner)

Maybe it's just as well that killer third goal in Bulgaria last week didn't prove decisive for Shamrock Rovers...

That was one of two interval changes but it didn’t alter the abundance of needle in the game, for Ludogorets lost a player within six minutes. Braga are willing to pay €2m for Bernard Tekpetey but the winger was fortunate not to see red approaching the break when he concluded his mazy run by lunging into Gary O’Neill. Rather wisely, he didn’t appear for the second half. A needless concession of a corner by Sean Hoare triggered three in a row and from the last, captain Anton Nedyalkov rose unmarked at the near post to plant a header which Alan Mannus pushed away. Blackpool target Andy Lyons kickstarted the move by advancing from left wing-back to ping in a cross that found Burke unattended. His low drive whistled past the post with the Dutch stopper beaten. Graham Burke, into the team for Rory Gaffney, led the way, almost springing the offside trap within three minutes.
