Cultural and tourism events over the course of July are estimated to have drawn around 250000 people to the county.
“All this caps off a great month of activity for our city and county. However with the health situation now improved, people have wanted to get back to these much cherished events and they have certainly done that this year. The Galway Races are set to cap off a €100 million month for Galway, according to figures produced by Galway Chamber.

The races are one of the key cultural and social highlights of the Irish summer and it is a great relief to see its return. “This has been a tremendous month of activity for Galway, which is now set to finish off with the full return of the Galway Races,” said Kenny Deery, Chief Executive of Galway Chamber. And it is believed that the Galway Races this week will attract 130,000 people to the region, contributing over €58 million to the local economy.
But retirement is great. I've been busy at the sales purchasing a couple of horses and I'm looking forward to the week. The opening race of the meeting looks ...
Echoes In Rain is very interesting off a mark of 87. There'll be a huge atmosphere in Galway with the crowds back at Ballybrit. But I would be keeping a very close eye on Galway specialist One Cool Poet, who is first reserve. He's going to start a short-priced favourite after a very eye-catching run in the Curragh on debut when second and he can get the master of Ballybrit off to a good start in the seven-furlong maiden at 6.10pm. But I also like Taipan for Jessica Harrington with Mikey O'Sullivan taking seven pounds off. Elsewhere on the card, I think Irish Lullaby in the Eventus Handicap at 7.50pm has a big chance for Jessica Harrington. She's won two of her last three and has a good draw in stall two.
The Tubber man goes aboard Foveros in the Connacht Hotel Handicap at 6.40pm, with the Willie Mullins trained runner having come second in this race last year. O ...

This has the look of a match between two newcomers from the yards of Willie Mullins and his nephew Emmet Mullins. Bukhill, trained by Willie for his sister Sandra, is related to a couple of bumper winners and you suspect he will be sold after what connections hope will be an exciting debut. But there is good word too for This Songisforyou, a horse bought at the Keeneland Sales by Emmet and now owned by the Mee family, whose horses are always primed for this fixture. This horse has some decent placed form, his trainer and jockey are in good form, and the horse has been gelded since his most recent start which could bring about a bit of improvement. The fact that Farout won over hurdles here last year gives him a slight edge and he is selected to give rider Jody Townend a second success in this race. Aidan O’Brien’s Cairo has to be respected but he has an American dirt racing pedigree, so there has to be a doubt as to whether or not he will like the conditions. My short-list would be Echoes In Rain, Foveros, Winterwatch, Farout and Youmdor. Four of those five are trained by Willie Mullins. It might come down to a battle between Echoes In Rain and Farout, two high-class hurdlers who are unexposed in flat handicaps. With that in mind, let’s take a chance on Seeingisbelieving, who is drawn in stall 1. The rain that fell in the west over the weekend will suit hot favourite HMS Seahorse, who can get the festival off to a flyer for favourite backers. Watch out too for Delightfantastic who landed a little touch at Tipperary recently and probably has more to offer. Common Practice only won the Apprentice Derby at the Curragh by a neck but he was well-backed there and one suspects he is better than he showed there. Your Eyes Only and Common Practice stand out. Trained by Willie Mullins, Your Eyes Only was a big market drifter when she won a small maiden at Fairyhouse recently.

Doyle is riding with real confidence right now, with a 27 per cent strike-rate over the past fortnight. Indestructible finished a solid fifth on his debut at the Curragh last month and Michael O’Callaghan’s Irish raider is likely to go close with improvement anticipated here. He needs to settle better but that’s a minor concern for him now with only five rivals in opposition. Both of this year’s races have worked out well formwise, and a mark of 80 can be within reach for this three-year-old before long. Among them are Thunder Ball and MANUHA, third and fifth respectively over course and distance on their debuts a fortnight ago. She is back on board for the first time since Gaius finished second in a Windsor novice on his debut in May 2021 and could prove vital in the saddle.

He explained: “I wasn’t sure which horse to shout for as my wife owns the second! I thought, going down to the start, that she was going to be too keen. Dutch Schultz was third with another Mullins inmate Lot Of Joy – a Swedish St Leger winner – making eyecatching ground to finish fourth.

“The plan was to just out and make the running and he got it fairly easy in front. “He (Foley) said he got going early but coming around the corner he looked around and is still learning. “It was long last furlong but there was a great sense of relief at the line.” The 2-1 winner made all under Shane Foley and always looked to hold his market rival. “She was buzzed up but we went a good gallop. “Sixteenth time lucky!” he gasped immediately afterwards.
The style, the feathered -sequinned-towering -blooming hats, the fake tan, the make-up, the nails and fresh blow-drys – it would bring a tear to your eye.
“We did get tickets, we are avid fans. “It’s great to be here again. “You’re looking right down at the track, and it is such a lovely track to watch the racing.” I go to Cheltenham too, and this is better.” “So this was our week where our mother would take us down and rent and spend a few days at the beach and a few days at the races. “I think the roar of the crowd makes the Galway Races special to me.” “Wonderful to be back we always love Monday evening racing and it’s great to see everybody out and about, and the weather is lovely. “It was a privilege to be involved working during the pandemic but it’s great to get out and be free after the lockdown and have fun.” “It’s lovely to be here and to meet the people. “But we always just have good fun together, and today is the first time we have seen each other in a year. “And we always come for the opening day, I think it’s more special. “It’s a most beautiful place, and I think the good weather makes it.”

Mark Walsh is in the saddle. And I fancy him to go close on board Tax For Max in the opening race on the card, the COLM QUINN BMW Novice Hurdle. It looks a good opportunity for the five- ...
He's drawn in stall eight and ran well the last day when third behind Jungle Cove at Leopardstown. I think a stiff mile, which Galway is, will play to his strengths. Cowboy Justice is very interesting down the bottom for Jessica Harrington, with Shane Foley on board. The COLM QUINN BMW Mile Handicap is the big race on day two.
Many of the McGuinness contenders have obvious claims, notably Casanova (a course and distance winner last September) and Saltonstall, second and fourth ...
lower mark than when sixth in this contest twelve months ago. And he should have a rock-solid chance. Rated 134 and on the cusp of making the ‘cut’ for Thursday’s Guinness Galway Hurdle, Tax For Max sets the standard in the opening, listed COLM QUINN BMW Novice Hurdle, despite his defeat, when 13/8 favourite, by stable-companion Farout in a novice hurdle here last year. The only three-year-old in the field, Shane Foley’s mount will be bidding to become the first of his generation to land this valuable prize since Palace Star in 2004. The Jessica Harrington-trained Cowboy Justice, highly-regarded as a two-year-old last year and successful in Killarney two weeks ago, just made the ‘cut’ and is one of the market leaders. One of the less obvious McGuinness contenders is Pierre Lapin, the mount of Dylan Browne McMonagle, yet to strike since arriving from Roger Varian’s while Spanish Tenor, successful at Gowran Park last time and third in the ‘Ahonoora’ here last year, will guarantee a strong pace. Apprentice Adam Caffery gets a good tune out of Casanova, as shown when fourth to Raadobarg in the Irish Lincoln, sixth to Celtic Crown in a €150,000 Curragh Handicap and second at Leopardstown last time. Sixth to Max Mayhem in the ‘Northfields’ at the Curragh last September, Mosala showed little on his first two starts this season but, keen in the ‘Nasrullah’, made most of the running before being beaten less than a length. lower mark than when third a year ago. But I’ll look elsewhere for the likely winner and suggest the Henry de Bromhead-trained Mosala, who split the McGuinness pair when third to Jungle Cove in the ‘Nasrullah’ and is the mount today of Wayne Lordan, who won this race on David Wachman’s Hint Of A Tint back in 2015. Significantly, Mosala won last year’s ‘Nasrullah’, off a mark of 86, before finishing a creditable third to Sirjack Thomas in this event, off a 7lb. Many of the McGuinness contenders have obvious claims, notably Casanova (a course and distance winner last September) and Saltonstall, second and fourth respectively in the Nasrullah Handicap at Leopardstown less than three weeks ago.
