Drogheda United defender Evan Weir equalised only to be sent off in the space of two minutes late on as a dour game ended in drama at Tallaght Stadium.

Shamrock Rovers dropped two points in the title race as Evan Weir's late equaliser earned a point for ten-man Drogheda United.

The Hoops survived a scare minutes later as Burke cleared Cowan’s header off the line before Roberto Lopes heroically denied Foley’s follow-up. After defeating the champions in May, Drogheda produced a determined display and nearly broke the deadlock on 50 minutes, as Keith Cowan and Adam Foley saw their efforts cleared off the line. Richie Towell sent his shot just over, before Colin McCabe denied Burke on 35 minutes with a strong hand. Emakhu missed a glorious chance to win it on 94 minutes but dragged his effort wide.

Unfortunately, Rovers could not see the game out and take home all three points as Drogheda scored with three minutes left to play. Rovers brought on some fresh legs in Aidamo Emakhu and Justin Ferizaj as they attempted to push for a breakthrough. The Hoops had further cause for concern when Lopes, captain for the day, was forced off with an injury. Stephen Bradley’s men continued to stay on top for the remainder of the first half, keeping possession well and looking threatening down the wings. Chances were few and far between in the opening stages as both teams had spells of possession as they tried to work their way into the game.
