“We knew we had the Armagh game coming up and after it I knew that was it. “We knew we had to play a certain way and when we did get on top of Derry, it was a huge opportunity to win that game and that was the disappointing factor when we were two points up in the Ulster final.” “It’s very difficult to a certain point (why inconsistencies occur). If you look at the Ulster Final we were two points up and then was the time to put the foot on the throat and win that game, we didn’t and conceded two soft scores in a minute.

Declan Bonner describes managing Donegal as 'a great honour' as ... (Belfast Telegraph)

Donegal football team boss Declan Bonner has called time on his role having been in charge for the past five years.

Since then there had been plenty of speculation about whether Bonner would remain in his role as manager. Having introduced a number of new players to the team in more recent seasons, Bonner had been hopeful that his mix of youth and experience would bring success to the county, but it was not to be despite the intense passion he showed while fulfilling his role, with Michael Murphy proving an inspirational skipper. “I am stepping down with immediate effect from my role as manager but I want to say that it has been a great honour to manage this team over the past five years just as it was to manage the teams from Under-16 level up in the five years before that,” said Bonner.

Donegal search for new manager begins after Declan Bonner ... (Extra.ie)

Donegal begin their search for a new football manager after Declan Bonner resigned last night, with one year of his term remaining.

Meanwhile, Brian Cody's future as Kilkenny manager is shrouded in some doubt, amid speculation he could be about to call time on his 24-year reign in charge of the Cats following their All-Ireland final loss to Limerick last weekend. It brings to an end weeks of speculation about his future, prompted by a disappointing end to the summer when Armagh emphatically defeated them in the qualifiers just a fortnight after losing the Ulster final to a Derry team managed by Rory Gallagher, who he succeeded as Donegal boss. Bonner announced his decision at a county board meeting last night where he delivered his annual end of term report to clubs, bringing the curtain down on a five-year reign that yielded back-to-back Ulster titles in 2018 and 2019.

"My family are delighted that I am stepping away,” Bonner says after stepping down as the Donegal senior football team manager.

That’s all they do - they go to criticise or to throw up whatever. He said: "Will people continue to volunteer for a voluntary sports organisation if this level of abuse continues? They will be the same guys who’ll be talking about the Ireland rugby team, the Ireland soccer team, or whatever it is. I also hope I never raise anyone to be as pathetic as to abuse people from behind a keyboard. Some of them don’t even put their name to what they’re saying.” My family are delighted that I am stepping away.”
