There were some great videos and photos shared online - from photographers and spectators right around our huge harbour. Last night's display, on one of the hottest nights of the summer, included 1300 fireworks, one for every convict who died on the island in its three prison incarnations - in the 1800’s, 1921 and from 1985 to 2004. The magnificent light show took place on Fort Mitchel on the island, a fortress that was held by the British until 1938.

The night sky over Cork Harbour was lit by a stunning fireworks display last night to celebrate Independence Day and the 84th birthday of Spike Island. As well as marking the historical event, the Fortress Fireworks Fun Night laid on plenty of entertainment for visitors including tours, music, and children’s activities, culminating in the fireworks display as night fell over the island.
