Last night's display, on one of the hottest nights of the summer, included 1300 fireworks, one for every convict who died on the island in its three prison incarnations - in the 1800โs, 1921 and from 1985 to 2004. The magnificent light show took place on Fort Mitchel on the island, a fortress that was held by the British until 1938.
