Drank a coffee at the Morris gravesite and wandered the ruins of an 800-year-old castle. With a star-studded field atop the leaderboard, St. Andrews serving as a historic backdrop and the pressure on given this is the final major of the year, the 150th Open has already been one remember. Gusts may top 20 mph but the main wind will hold around 10 mph. If this is the case, it would securely be a two horse race. McIlroy and Hovland will be the final pairing on Sunday after providing the drama in the penultimate game of Saturday's round. I am not quite sure how much firmer the Old Course can get, so the slight wind and tricked up pins will serves as the main defenses -- as they have all week.
Tiger Woods failed to make the cut on Friday and broke down in tears as he waved farewell to the Scottish crowd for what could be the final time of his career.
14:40 Cameron Young (US), Cameron Smith (Aus) “The support that I’ve gotten this week has been absolutely incredible,” McIlroy said. Reflecting on day three, he added: "That was a lot of fun. "It's about going out there and do the same thing today," he said. “I just have to do my thing. That leaves him -11 for the weekend.

ST. ANDREWS — As I sit in my room at the Rusacks Hotel, peering out a window that overlooks the greatest venue in golf, on the week of the 150th Open ...
A bit of a baton passing from Tiger to Rory, and JT [Justin Thomas] was on the tee.” McLaughlin was one of my playing partners at the JP McManus Pro-Am. He runs the First Tee and the World Golf Hall of Fame. He was there, on the 18th green at Pebble Beach in 2019, when I got the trophy for winning the amateur competition of the Pure Insurance Championship, which benefits the First Tee. I was invited by Steve John, the tournament director, who has become a great friend (and another Uncle Tony regular). I was holding the trophy in one hand and my 2-year old son in the other. We jumped fences, crawled under another and paid our respects to Allan Robertson and Old and Young Tom Morris. I offered a silent thanks to them for the impact they’ve had on our lives. “Morning Drive” and Golf Channel gave me the platform and the opportunity to build a brand that has led to the Fire Pit Collective. Also editing for us is Mark Godich, a former editor at Sports Illustrated, who was also hired by Mulvoy in 1995 and often worked with Bamberger and Shipnuck on their stories at SI. He’s the husband of Molly Solomon, who hired me from Golf Digest to be the lifestyle guy on Golf Channel’s “Morning Drive.” Russell also made the jump from Golf World to Golf Channel, and although he’s now semi-retired, we’ve hired Russell this week to help edit our stories, in what is surely the beginning of a fruitful relationship. And to play in that pro-am, with Carr as my caddie, was one of the greatest weeks of my life. Dan Robertson is having a beer with Marty Carr. It was Skinner who gave me the room that got me access to the deck that day, and it was Robertson who introduced me to Carr (above) at the Conde Nast Building in New York City not long after I had moved into the writing job at Golf Digest. It was at a 2007 lunch with Carr and Robertson that we plotted my first travel stories to Ireland. Carr owns and operates Carr Golf Travel, and he has become like a brother to me. It was a call no one should have to make, and a phone call no one should have to take. Back to St. Andrews, and there is Sezna, with his wife, Barb, headed to play Kingsbarns. They’re joined by Paul Spengler, another well-connected man in golf who for years ran the golf operations at Pebble Beach, and who has also become a friend. And I was off and running, choosing pictures shot by some of the greatest photographers in the world, which would be used to illustrate stories for some of the best writers in the world. I started the same week Tiger Woods turned pro at the Milwaukee Open. I got that job because Ward Haynes, who was nearly a son to Mulvoy, pulled me aside and told me he’d be leaving his position as golf photo editor in a month and that he was going to train me as his replacement. Having outlived his wife and five children, it seems fitting he now fills the role of Father Time. I see that face in the wall near that clock as a reminder that it all comes to an end, even for the game’s grand old man.

Speith negotiates the road and road furniture. Cameron Smith is currently on course for a 65 and he has another look at birdie coming up on the 16th, from about 18 feet. A big moment on the 14th. Rory McIlroy found the rough from the tee. A huge moment: Cameron Smith lines up his birdie putt at the 16th. He’s caught it well and his ball trickles to a couple of feet short of the green. Of course, if McIlroy misses the birdie putt and Smith gets down in two, he still has one more trick up his sleeve: an eagle at 18. He looks from behind the hole. He putts and it doesn’t have the legs, rolling back off the green. A closing 64 at St Andrews when in the hunt: the stuff of legend. Rory continues the theme of his day and misses his birdie putt. His 20-under is the record winning score at St Andrews - one better than Tiger in 2000 and two better than Sir Nick Faldo in 1990.
