"To be honest, I don't even remember the third round from seven years ago. "I know I've got the game. The American, who came tied second in 2018 at Carnoustie, at one point looked poised to at least equal the lowest score in an Open at St Andrews of 63 as he birdied seven of his first 10 holes. "It's obviously a really good spot to be in. Johnson, the two-time major winner, is hoping to avoid any repeat of the last Open at St Andrews in 2015, when he led at the halfway stage on 10-under but a third-round 75 ended his hopes. However, there is a sense in St Andrews that the main threat to Smith may come from McIlroy, who built on his opening 66 with a 68 on Friday and is on 10-under, level in third place at the halfway stage with Viktor Hovland.

At the moment, he is tied 8th on -7. His drive on 17 is a thing of fascination as he goes left, seemingly just short of the sea. Bryson Dechambeau was going along nicely on that mark, but has just ran up a horror double bogey on 16 as he falls back to -5. Flies the ball over the TV tower, but it hops on the 17th green and onto the road off the green. The former US Open winner went so far left, he was given line of sight relief from heavy rough. "It's more just whenever someone's up around the top of a major championship leaderboard, you know they're playing well. "You just look at where you are on the leaderboard," he said. Delightful pitch shot to a few feet on the closing hole from 90 yards or so. After chipping in from off the green for an eagle on 9, he has repeated the dose by chipping in again for eagle on 10. The Northern Irishman is in green today and he will aim to conquer those greens at the Old Course on moving day. Smith giving the chasing field encouragement early on. Suddenly they are all bunching up at the top.

He missed a birdie chance on the 18th. Right when it looked like it couldn’t get any better, he holed a 65-foot eagle putt on the 14th hole. McIlroy got one of the loudest cheers — for a shot, not a farewell — with his 25-foot birdie on the tough Road Hole at the 17th. His 8-under 64 gave him his first lead in a major, by two shots over PGA Tour rookie Cameron Young. Rory McIlroy was lurking another shot behind. “It’s very emotional for me,” he said. Other notable golfers to miss the cut included Keegan Bradley, Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Collin Morikawa and Webb Simpson. Smith was at 13-under 131, the lowest 36-hole score in the Open at St. Andrews. He was tied with Viktor Hovland, who delivered his own thrills by holing out from 139 yards for eagle on the par-4 15th hole and finishing with a birdie for a 66. Young overcame a few mistakes and closed with a birdie for a 69, putting him in the last group with Smith going into the weekend. “To me it felt like this might have been my last British Open here at St. Andrews. And the fans, the ovation and the warmth, it was an unbelievable feeling.” Woods strode over the Swilcan Bridge without stopping to pose for pictures and said it “felt like the whole tournament was right there” when he walked the final 356 yards of what was otherwise a long day of 75 to miss the cut. Tiger Woods failed to make the cut at St. Andrews after shooting a 9-over in the first two rounds of the tournament.

Let's just say the Aussie was really on a roll during the second round at St. Andrews.

Keeping that kind of putting up over the weekend is a tall order. Smith's total of 253 feet worth of putts for the day is the most on record during a PGA Tour round. According to datagolf.com, the reigning Players champ gained a ridiculous 6.2 strokes putting alone on Friday, accounting for 80 percent of the 7.69 shots he gained on the field overall.

He was also leading at this stage of the 2015 championship at St Andrews but slithered backwards into a share of 49th. A spurned birdie chance on the last, however, was something of an anti-climax but McIlroy, seeking a first major win in eight years, is right in there. It was McIlroy, though, who was at the vanguard of the night raid. The monstrous eagle putt, meanwhile, was something of a bonus. The world No 6 had sprinted out of the blocks with three birdies in a row as he raced to the turn in 31. When he upped the ante with a mighty eagle putt from some 60-feet on the 14th, this golfing wizard of Oz had fortified his position of authority.

Cameron Smith, during the second round of the Open Championship at St. Andrews, may have set a putting record.

465-yard, par-4 13th: 2 feet (par) 480-yard, par-4 4th: 2 feet (par) It’s here where you’re maybe wondering his secret, and GOLF’s Luke Kerr-Dineen took a nice look into that here. “They’ve been keeping statistics on the PGA Tour since 2004. According to the Open’s online scoreboard, Smith rolled in 255 feet of putts, which is about 15 feet more than Brent Geiberger’s record number from 2006, when he made 240 feet, 4 inches of putts. A lot of fun can be had with the length of putts Smith dropped over his Open Championship second round on Friday at St. Andrews. You can add this one, too.

Now, the Australian is staring at the possibility of winning his first Major trophy that too in the 150th edition of the prestigious British Open. Meanwhile, five LIV Golf players are in the mix led by two-time major champion Dustin Johnson, who carded a five-under 67 to end sole fifth after Round 2 at nine-under 135. He played on the International Team for 2019 Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Club. The golfer scripted his best finish in the British Open till date, tied 20th, at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. He clinched the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Kapalua (Hawaii) followed by the PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass, where he pocketed the biggest pay cheque of his career at $3.6 million. On the par-4 452-yard second, Smith drove to 322 yards and then hit a 131-yard approach to land within 17 feet of the cup before draining his second birdie. He qualified for the 2015 U.S. Open and finished tied fourth that helped him get a direct entry into the next year's Masters Tournament at Augusta National. The same year he also scripted his best finish at the Masters, ending tied fifth. On the par-4 first hole, Smith hit a 255-yard tee shot followed by a 117-yard approach that landed 47 feet prior to the flag. On the par-4 398-yard third, the Aussie holed a 12 feet birdie only proving he has a strong short game. It's something I've always done, and I think it's key," Smith told reporters after his fabulous second round. "I don't take a practice stroke. The last thought of mine is to take a long, hard look at the hole and really feel the putt.

Cameron Smith has a rough go of it on No. 13 (The Boston Globe)

Smith began Saturday with a two-shot lead, but ended it four behind Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland and with plenty of regrets.

“It was a nice lie in the rough and I could be fairly aggressive. “Instead of the ball running out in the green, it ends up in the lip of a pot bunker. “Just got to get used to the conditions.” Scheffler ended up with a bogey on that hole, after two straight birdies on the 10th and 11th. Look, I feel like I played OK . . . wouldn’t take Einstein to figure out what went wrong on the back nine. “I think you just got to get used to the golf course and the firmness. Then he hacked out into more rough on a bank in front of the green, and failed to get up and down. And the weather in Scotland can change fast. Johnson bogeyed two of his next three holes, then hit a drive lower than he wanted to on No. 18 and nearly struck Swilcan Bridge in front of the tee box. Young’s ball bounced off to the right over the green, and his return chip flew past the pin and down the slope. Johnson was alone in seventh place, six shots off the lead. He ended it four behind Rory McIlroy and Viktor Hovland, and with plenty of regrets after his 1-over 73 that left him tied for third place at 12 under.

World No.6 Smith three-putted the first hole and it set the tone for his one-over 73, one of only two over par rounds from players within the top 20. World No.1 Scottie Scheffler (11 under), Dustin Johnson (10 under) Matt Fitzpatrick and Adam Scott (nine under) are just some of the players within seven shots.

With a Sunday 64 on the Old Course at St. Andrews, Australia's Cameron Smith won the 150th British Open for his first major title.

The only mistake he made was a poor approach to the 17th green, the Road Hole. You can’t miss it left there, and Smith did – leaving himself virtually no shot. His birdie at the 11th cut the lead to one before McIlroy followed with his birdie at the 10th. He had made five straight and gone a shot ahead of McIlroy. Smith then made birdies at the 12th, 13th and 14th holes – where he two-putted from 80 feet. His four-stroke overhaul matched the largest comeback win at St. Andrews, most recently achieved by John Daly in 1995. Yet while the 33-year-old subsequently birdied just once more, up ahead Smith -- having already doubled the tally by his fifth hole -- burst through the back nine with a run of five birdies before adding one more at the 18th. With Young draining a dramatic final eagle just moments earlier, the Australian's eighth and final birdie of the round spared him a playoff, his victory assured after McIlroy failed to make the speculative eagle chip needed to draw level.

Smith birdied five consecutive holes in the final round at St. Andrews, shooting an 8-under 64 and overtaking Rory McIlroy for his first major title.

But he didn’t make a birdie over his last eight holes and shot 70 to finish in third at 18 under. Smith calmly stepped into his putt and knocked it in to win his first major championship. Young, who likely will be the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year and was ranked in the 500s early last summer, closed with a 65 to finish at 19 under. But the man who prefers a rod and reel in his hands instead of a 9-iron unleashed the most powerful weapon of the day – his putter. The five consecutive birdies reeled in McIlroy and gave Smith the lead. But playing partner Cameron Young had driven the green and then knocked in a 15-footer for eagle to tie Smith if only for a moment.

Smith fired a final-round 64 to win at St Andrews as McIlroy missed the chance to win his fifth major.

McIlroy was unable to convert his long birdie putt on the 17th as Smith putted up from short of the 18th green to set up a tap-in birdie, before playing partner Young holed from 15 feet for an eagle. An errant drive then meant Hovland was unable to reach the par-five fifth in two, but McIlroy easily found the putting surface with a towering iron shot and two-putted for his first birdie of the day to move two ahead. American Cameron Young made a brilliant eagle on the 18th in his closing 65 to force Smith to hole from two feet for his final birdie, leaving McIlroy needing his own eagle to force a four-hole play-off.

Cameron Smith wins the Open after reeling in Rory McIlroy with ... (The Guardian)

Cameron Smith produced a sensational final-round 64 at St Andrews to overtake the overnight leader Rory McIlroy and claim the Open Championship.

With Greg Norman fronting the Saudi Arabian-backed operation, which McIlroy sits in such stark opposition to, there is a joke somewhere about Australians causing grief to the Northern Irishman. Now just may not be the time to tell it. With McIlroy and Viktor Hovland in the final group, it was the Norwegian who blinked first. It’s the way it is.” “If you lose by eight you don’t really care.” The 25-year-old’s curious major year has seen two missed cuts, a tied third and a second. Smith, who won the Players Championship in May, is enjoying the time of his life. The lead was now shared. McIlroy needed to make short work of the par five 14th but could not after failing to reach the green in two. He played with a day-four fearlessness that renders him the worthy champion of such a landmark event. Smith’s 19 under played McIlroy’s 18 under as the former birdied the 14th. Smith’s 20 under par saw off Young by one and a rueful but magnanimous McIlroy by two. The crowd offered an impromptu roar in vain hope of sporting fairytale. It is difficult to state McIlroy did much wrong during round four, save perhaps not capitalise appropriately on opportunity.

Ask a Stanley Cup-winning hockey player how many beers fit inside the trophy, and they'll likely know the answer right away (it's 14, for those wondering).

A bottle of Jameson is right around 25 ounces, meaning two 12-ounce beers, and maybe a few more sips of another, would fit inside the jug. Earlier this week, Shane Lowry told us on the "Be Right" podcast that an entire bottle of Jameson fit in the jug when he won it in 2019. "I'll probably have about 20 Claret Jugs tonight."
