France 2-1 Belgium: Women's Euro 2022, Group D – as it happened (The Guardian)

France reach the quarter-finals after sinking Belgium who were down to 10 players after Amber Tysiak was shown red in the closing minutes of normal time.

It’s all to play for but France are the brighter side so far. But they saw many chances go awry and Belgium were the next to score through Cayman to relight the clash. Diani runs it up the other end and crosses in but Sarr can’t get to it. Diani, who has had a good match, passes but the whistle blows for an earlier offside by Cascarino. Belgium have a chance as Wullaert seeks De Caigny in the box but they don’t pull it off. Again Belgium are forced to play out of their own half but in the end French defenders outnumber the Belgian attack. 58 min: Geyoro is down in the box and she receives boos for it, was it a dive? It’s been all Belgium in the last few minutes but they didn’t get a shot on target. 82 min: Geyoro is found in the box but she is tackled well. There’s a VAR check for a penalty ahead of the second corner - I’m unsure what they are looking for there’s nothing there for me but I think it’s for handball. 88 min: The VAR check results in the ref having to look at the screen. The whistle has gone, France are through to the last 8 Not so much for the penalty as for the player to miss possibly their last game of the tournament.

Belgium drew 1-1 with Iceland on matchday one, a result which did not particularly suit either team. Even then, it is difficult to see how they would be able to keep Diacre's women out for 90 minutes. The fear before a ball had been kicked in England was that France might implode this summer. Two players who would surely be part of France's traveling party based on ability, Amandine Henry and Eugenie Le Sommer, were left at home after falling out with the boss.

The fact that I could play today is a great satisfaction and a great pride. The first goal we scored is a good example of the confidence we had. That is also the strength of a group. I'm very happy with my performance and that of the team. We need to make the most of these joyful moments when they arise. Corinne Diacre, France coach: "Belgium gave it their all at the end of the game, they wanted to equalise. The second half had its worries but the job is done: France are through to the quarter-finals as group winners. I did not think I would be able to write this after this match, but a draw would have been more than deserved. Although there is a difference in level between the teams, Belgium really made it difficult for France. But perhaps they started to underestimate Belgium because their play seemed nonchalant and Cayman levelled the scores. France remained on top in the second half, Evrard reacting well to a sliced Sarr shot before De Neve denied Karchaoui with a timely sliding tackle shortly afterwards. France responded within five minutes; Griedge Mbock Bathy, restored to the starting line-up to partner Renard, heading in a cross from the other player in the Bleues XI who did not begin against Italy, Clara Matéo.
