Shane Lowry: I have what it takes to put my name on Claret Jug again (Extra.ie)

The Claret Jug, golf's most famous trophy, sits by the practice range at St Andrews, clearly visible to every player competing in the 150th Open.

This is Lowry's ninth Open and he knows the value of a decent start, as was the case in Portrush, when he opened with a 67. 'I was chatting to Henrik and his caddie Lordy and we were kind of talking along those lines,โ€™ said Lowry. 'Lordy said he saw the smile on my face and said, "You're liking it here this week, aren't you?" At Hoylake in 2014, when McIlroy won, he began with a 68 and tied ninth. 'I feel like I'm better at that now,' he added. Henrik Stenson and his caddie Gareth Lord were tops in Troon in 2016 and have a sense of what Lowry is experiencing. 'I've been here since Sunday morning and it becomes a long week. Last year, at Royal St George's, he shot 71 and finished 12th. 'I've been in the Road Hole a few times at the Dunhill and it's not that bad, and I've been in it twice already this week and I've had no shot. 'I think this tournament isn't going to be as easy as everyone is suggesting,' said Lowry. 'You're going to hit it in a pot bunker at some stage this week and probably going to be screwed. As a former champion, Lowry has been there, seen it, got the job done. 'But this game gives you nothing, absolutely zero. Lowry is off at 10.09 this morning, directly behind Rory McIlroy - what a morning in store for Irish fans here in Fife - and he is anxious to jump from the trap.

Rory McIlroy was out on his own, when he finished up on 18, as second with a -6 round of 66. Seeing how his playing partner had come up short, he putt some oomph on it and the ball got to within four feet away for a handy par putt. As it happened, though, his putt stopped 26 feet short and he was left with a tricky par putt. He found himself +3 after four holes, after a disastrous double bogey on the second and a bogey on the fourth. Some of the Old Course greens, at St Andrew's, are massive and the Clara native faced a 133-foot birdie putt. On the 9th, he drove over the back of the green, chipped to within six feet of the hole and sank a birdie putt.

Shane Lowry keeps his cool to retain his Open dream (Irish Mirror)

'I didn't get too flustered at all on my start, which I could have done and I have done in the past', said the 2019 champion.

"The only good thing about doing it early on is you give yourself time to recover. The double on 2...like, double on these tournaments is tough to take. "I felt very optimistic this morning, but then you're 3-over through 4, and you're like it's not what I wanted. I fought hard like I always do and I shot level par." "Look, I played lovely golf today. "I got off to the worst possible start.

Shane Lowry keeps cool despite nightmare start at The Open (Extra.ie)

Right of the service road which divides the Old Course from the New Course at St Andrews, Shane Lowry was confronted by his first spooky moment in the ...

It's not in the middle of the field. It's not the end of the world. When he smashed his drive on to the 12th green, and faced a 45- footer for eagle, all sorts of possibilities opened up. It got better with a run of threes from the eighth to the 11th, which he covered in two under par. Lowry had no option but to take a penalty drop, only he wasn't sure of his bearings and called out to his caddie Bo Martin, 'Where's the line of the pin, Bo?' The good news for the 2019 champion was that the New Course is not out of bounds.
