NCAA Division I University of Southern Illinois has received a commitment from Joey Testa for its first recruiting class.

Testa made it back in the B-final of the girls’ 100 fly (11th) and 200 IM (12th). At the time, Southern Indiana was a part of the Great Valley Lakes Conference in Division II but has since been announced that they will transition to the DI Summit League. Testa was also a member of Norwin Senior’s 400 free and 200 medley relays. Senior year, she swam the 100 back and 100 fly, finishing 20th and 11th, respectively. I am so excited to announce that I will be continuing my athletic and academic career at the University of Southern Indiana. Thank you to my family, friends and coaches that have helped me throughout this process. Joey Testa of Norwin, PA has committed to swim for the University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles as they take on their first season this season.

On the Fly: High country delights (Glenwood Springs Post Independent)

Flies of note are damsels, water boatmen, scuds, chironomids, callabaetis, hoppers and small streamers. It seems to be more effective to “sight fish” on lakes, ...

Most of these lakes contain brook and cutthroat trout exclusively, and many have small streams to enjoy on your way up and down the trail. Most fish in local lakes relate to the bank more than the deep water, so cruising the shoreline usually seems more effective than utilizing a belly boat or canoe. Keep in mind that our monsoonal rains will be here soon in the afternoons, so hiking up early is key to avoid lightning in the high country.

The upside-down flag was taken down, then righted. Almost instantly it was once-again taken down, as was the Canadian flag. Zooming in with my 250 mm telephoto lens I noticed that an American courtesy flag on the starboard was flying upside-down.

"Big crowd for the display. Charlie Wilkins told CorkBeo that there were hundreds of families waiting for the air show: "people and their kids were sitting in the park and standing by the church as well." Elite Fly Water Bottle Review - FeedTheHabit.com (feedthehabit.com)

With a variety of water bottles lying around, I typically use one of the many Specialized Purist 22 oz. bottles at my disposal. But, when the Elite Fly ...

The most important aspect of any water bottle is how easy it is to pull it out of the cage when you need hydration. It’s easy to squeeze lots of water out in a hurry and they remain secure across all cages I’ve used. As opposed to the large notch of the Specialized bottles, these only have a small indent that plops into the lip of the bottle cage. And, in the process, the bottles are lighter and easier to clean. Now, shaving weight with your water bottles isn’t going to yield huge results, but if you are looking to drop 60 grams or so, you could opt for the Elite Fly 550ml bottles and also give up about 200ml of water compared to a pair of Specialized Purist bottles. But, when the Elite Fly water bottle was introduced, I started using the 550ml and subsequently added a few 750ml versions for longer rides.

Curtis Mayfield's 'Super Fly' Soundtrack: 10 Things You Didn't Know (Rolling Stone)

Learn how Curtis Mayfield turned a 1972 film soundtrack into a smash-hit LP. Michael Putland/Getty Images. In late 1971, when Curtis Mayfield began writing ...

“I’m glad I was in a position to let everybody see what the Academy Awards are — a personalized social club with exclusive members,” Mayfield said. “It’s as if you put together a collage of pictures into a pattern, so you look at it from afar and say, ‘Wow, look at that,’ and then you come up close, and these are pictures that you are familiar with put together in a different manner.” That Mayfield crossed over with such an unabashedly race-conscious album marked a monumental step in popular music, but he still struggled against segregation and racism for the rest of his career, including two particular, stinging humiliations. The Chicago Tribune called it a “sickening and dangerous screen venture.” A review in Newsweek said, “Going to see yourself as a drug dealer when you’re oppressed is sick. Super Fly briefly topped The Godfather as the highest-grossing film in the country, and was the third-highest-grossing film of 1972. As Diane Mayfield told me during an interview for my 2016 book,Traveling Soul: The Life of Curtis Mayfield (written with Todd Mayfield), his decision to hire a white manager was at least partly based on this. Sessions began at the end of 1971, when director Gordon Parks Jr. asked Mayfield and his band to appear in the film as a nightclub act performing behind the actors. Then came a hiatus of several months, during which he wrote a new album for his old group, the Impressions (Times Have Changed), toured Europe, and came up with the idea for his next album, Back to the World. Then he cut the rest of the soundtrack over three days at Curtom Studios on the South Side of Chicago, recording everything but his vocals live. After the recording, Mayfield ended up in a bitter dispute over a songwriting credit — for the haunting, gorgeous instrumental “Think” — with longtime arranger Johnny Pate, and the two never worked together again. It was important to Mayfield that Priest ended up winning in the end not through violence, but through his intellect. If you stand on the corner, you’re gonna notice the pimp, because he’s so bright … and you have to understand that half of every big city is a ghetto.” He even lived through a frightening, real-life version of the scene where a gang tries to extort money from the film’s main character. He had spent a decade with the Impressions, becoming one of pop music’s de facto voices of the civil rights movement with songs like “Keep On Pushing” and “People Get Ready.” He had written hundreds of songs for dozens of other artists (Major Lance, Gene Chandler, and the entire roster of OKeh Records, to name a few). He had also dealt with the dramatic changes of the Nixon era on his first solo album, 1970’s Curtis, and his 1971 follow-up, Roots. But somehow, with Super Fly he found another gear, a new level of artistry that would define him forever.
