Impressive Scotland level series with comfortable win in Argentina (The Guardian)

Scotland levelled their three-match Test series against Argentina with a commanding 29-6 victory in Salta. Hamish Watson, Mark Bennett, Matt Fagerson and ...

Scotland took full advantage as Fagerson barrelled over for his first Test try and the replacement Thompson added the extras. White set up Bennett, who cut an excellent line to score his second try in two weeks, and Kinghorn converted for a 15-6 lead. Argentina were unable to defend a driving lineout and Watson marked his milestone appearance by burrowing over for his seventh Test try. Scotland had trailed 6-3 before Watson gave them a narrow advantage three minutes before the break. Argentina failed to take advantage of Santiago Carreras scything through before Scotland squandered a similar opportunity. We bounced back from last week, but we came here to win a series and we won’t get ahead of ourselves.

Through the phases Argentina knock it on and so we have yet another scrum. Hutchinson has a good run but slips and so Scotland have to build from deep. And that is that for the first 40. Scotland set up a driving maul but Argentina bring it down legally. Argentina pound the ball into the corner and look to hit back. Darge's offload is beautiful to release Scotland and Bennett is over! Argentina come away with the ball and their slick passes aren't enough to set them off so they kick away. There's another offside for Argentina and Kinghorn kicks to the corner. The kicking game comes into play which ends in Kinghorn running, he takes a roll too many and Argentina have the ball. Scotland cough up the ball as they drive early. Argentina win their line-out and look to give the crowd something to cheer for. They keep inching forwards but Scotland are doing enough at the moment to stop them.

On three more occasions Argentina, celebrating their Independence Day, went over the Scottish line only to be held up by tenacious defence. The home side were 6-3 ahead minutes before the break when Watson, on his 50th appearance for Scotland and back after missing the first test through injury, scored the first try, going over at the end of a lineout maul. Blair Kinghorn kicked over a penalty and conversion while substitute Ross Thompson added two penalties as Scotland scored 21 unanswered points in the second half.

GREGOR TOWNSEND claimed that his Scotland side only scratched the surface of what they are really capable of when scoring 21 unanswered points in the second ...

Despite being a man down, Argentina battled their way onto the front foot and a last gasp tackle by Darge on Santiago Carreras was required to dislodge the ball in the act of scoring just before the hour mark. It was a bold which paid off when Watson burrowed over from the line-out drive. “I thought our pack wad outstanding, the back-row in particular, up against a quality opposition and away from home in tiring conditions. We can improve further, though, we’re just scratching the surface with that performance, and we’ll be really working to bring our best performance out next week. There is a lot of togetherness in the squad. “I’m satisfied with the result and especially with how we started the second half,” said Townsend afterwards.

That third quarter we had a lot of ball, a real credit to our maul and scrum performances.” So real credit to our team for that. Townsend added: “We started the game well. “They scored too easy and we are going to work hard for the next game.” “The first half was pretty even,” said Leicester hooker Montoya. “The second half they scored simple tries and we need to be more determined on our goal line. “(There are a) lot of areas to improve, but to win a Test match in Argentina takes a lot of hard work.

A well-taken first international try the highlight of another solid performance. Back fron injury, the Edinburgh man marked his 50th cap with a trademark all-action display, capped with a vital first-half try. Also cut out the jersey pulling and put his energy to better use with ball in hand. In for Jonny Gray, he worked hard and offered more in the loose. He also gave away a needless early penalty that let Boffelli level the scores early on. Not the biggest international no. One of the men brought into the side after a shaky set-piece performance last weekend. Outstanding, all action performance on his return. After struggling last weekend, he got dominance at the scrum. Another disappointing showing and the jury will be very much out on his international future at fly-half. Nearly scored, but got to stay in field. Has really put his hand up the past fortnight.
