“Science should never depend on just one study and this new work needs careful verification before it can be accepted as fact.” The matter has been discussed and debated in the scientific community for decades now. Scientist Qing-Bin Lu recently published a new study claiming there is a year-round ozone hole over Earth’s tropics.

Scientists claim to have found huge ozone hole over tropics, experts ... (WION)

Scientists have found a large ozone hole in the lower stratosphere over the tropics that can affect 50 per cent of the world's population.

They said that the hole is seven times the size of the Antarctic ozone hole, which only emerges during spring, according to a paper published in AIP Advances. “In my opinion the article lacks the scientific rigour necessary to be a reliable contribution. Ozone depletion in the tropics is nothing new and is mainly due to the acceleration of the Brewer-Dobson circulation.

Ozone hole 7 times bigger than the last one discovered: What is it ... (Firstpost)

The newly-discovered all-season hole in the ozone layer has been located in the lower stratosphere over the tropics for the last 30 years.

Preliminary reports show ozone depletion levels over equatorial regions are already endangering large populations and the associated UV radiation reaching these regions is far greater than expected. This long lifetime allows some of the CFCs to eventually reach the stratosphere. In the lower atmosphere, they are so stable that they persist for years, even decades, according to NASA website.

Ozone Hole 2022: The new ozone hole has been discovered above the tropics, the area between the tropic of Cancer and the tropic of Capricorn.

The loss of the gas in an ozone hole is 25 per cent more than the undisturbed atmosphere. The ozone layer is generally found in the lower portion of the stratosphere, about 15-35 kilometers (9 to 22 mi) above Earth. Its thickness varies seasonally and geographically. The layer contains a high concentration of ozone (O3) in relation to other parts of the atmosphere.

Scientific Community Contradicts Study About a New Ozone Hole ... (Nature World News)

Ozone holes have been reported in both polar regions in the past several years. Most of them have been associated to be located over Antarctica.

- The largest ozone hole in recorded history was estimated to be 28.4 million square kilometers, which occurred in September 2000. The EEA said that the stratospheric ozone depletion transpires both over the northern hemisphere in the Arctic and the southern hemisphere in Antarctica. - There has been a reduced number of ozone-depleting substances (ODS) worldwide since 1986. In its overall assessment, the EEA asserted that the ozone hole has showed indicators of healing since the said massive ozone opening in 2000. Most of them have been associated to be located over Antarctica. - The 2021 ozone hole was similar to the complexity and extent of a related atmospheric hole in 2020.

Alleged tropical ozone hole is actually a well understood phenomenon (News9 Live)

A new report on an ozone layer in the tropics has caused a flurry in the scientific and environment communities.

The Antarctic ozone hole was first discovered in the 1980s, the cause of ozone depletion traced to chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) released as refrigerants, propellants and solvents. According to contemporary scientists, there are serious errors in the new study. The ozone hole comes as a surprise to the scientific community. Lu says, "The present discovery calls for further careful studies of ozone depletion, UV radiation change, increased cancer risks, and other negative effects on health and ecosystems in the tropical regions." There was a dedicated worldwide effort to reduce the use of CFCs, codified by the Montreal protocol in 1987, leading to a recovery of the ozone layer in the twenty first century. The movement of ozone from the tropical regions to the polar regions is well understood, and takes place because of what is known as the Brewer–Dobson circulation, where hot air has the tendency to rise up into the stratosphere, more to the polar regions, and then descend. CFCs are undoubtedly the main ozone-depleting gases, but cosmic rays play a major triggering role in causing polar and tropical holes.” The existence of the tropical ozone hole is of great global concern. First, no tropical ozone hole was expected to exist from the prevailing photochemical theory. He maintained: “it sounds incredible that the great tropical hole was not discovered before. In an interview with the English newspaper The Independent, he stated: “Unlike the Antarctic ozone hole, which only appears in spring, the tropical one has been in all seasons since the 1980s. He added that there are “preliminary reports showing that ozone depletion levels in equatorial regions are already endangering large populations, and the associated UV radiation reaching the regions was much higher than expected.
