Kilkenny defeat even more crushing than Munster final heartache for ... (Irish Mirror)

Tony Kelly says the pain of last Saturday's loss to Kilkenny cuts deeper than their near miss in the Munster final against Limerick.

There is great support within the county. There was so much more than that aspect of losing John that let us down last weekend. “Everyone knows the player John is for us.

But it was a savage first year for Henry Shefflin, and like Lohan, he will be very happy going into the winter he has a lot to work with. When Padraic Mannion caught a puckout over Cian Lynch and the whole of Galway went berserk, I thought that was the moment they would kick on. So, I’m going to ask a question: if Cork in the quarter-final, Clare on Saturday, and Galway actually got their scoring efficiency right might they all would have won? Please review their details and accept them to load the content. Aerial catching, runners, touches, and the work when out of possession, was the best on show last weekend. The first of the games was a game I couldn’t wait for. He is the daddy of the sideline, and nobody can ever question that. He really has become one of the best in the game at doing a man-marking job. We can be very critical of the GAA when it comes to many things, and I include myself in that. In saying that, it's such a pity that the cost of living is gone through the roof. What I found also, is you get to meet loads of genuine GAA people from across the nation. Going into last Saturday's All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship semi-final most of the talk was about Clare and rightly so on what they had achieved in.

"The second half performance probably dipped a bit and that tends to happen in games like that. We went out and performed and performed well and we just didn't make the final. You can talk about managers and management teams and all sorts of people but when the game starts, the players bare their souls and they have to perform. We were at the same stage last year and the year before as well. “You have to be confident and you have to believe in your team and we did. “You go out to try and win every game.

Clare bowed out of the 2022 Liam MacCarthy race after a heavy semi-final defeat to Kilkenny on Saturday.

At the minute, we just have to get better and improve and have a cut off trying to get that again next year.” “It’s like a drug, you just become addicted to trying to get to an All-Ireland and win an All-Ireland. We’re no different in Clare, we’re trying to get back there. “There’s no point in feeling sorry for yourself or dwelling on it too much, you have to get straight back up and get back into it with your club, brush yourself down and look forward to a new inter-county season even though it’s probably a good few months away. “Obviously John was a loss for us at the weekend, but you just have to adapt to it. You probably don’t look back [on the good days] when you don’t win a piece of silverware. “Obviously we were below par on Saturday,” Kelly told reporters as he was named PwC GAA/GPA Player of the Month for June in hurling today.
