Variety ranks the best performances and movies of Tom Cruise's career so far, from "Jerry Maguire" to "Top Gun."
However, as John Anderton, a police officer trying to clear his name for a murder he has yet to commit, it’s Cruise’s precise choice of listening to Abigail (played by a magnificent Samantha Morton) that breaks the heart in two. Pouring in every ounce of himself, Cruise’s Oscar-nominated performance is (currently) the last time he’s been recognized by the Academy, and it stands as his finest hour in Paul Thomas Anderson’s mosaic drama. Under the thumb of Stanley Kubrick and his final outing with his then-wife, Nicole Kidman, Cruise dives into the erotic drama that feels among the actor’s bravest character outings. There’s always been something about Maverick tossing Goose’s (Anthony Edwards) dog tags overboard following his death that always struck a chord. He sends chills down the spine, moving like a shark through a club and listening to his prey with a mischievous grin. At best a co-lead to Jamie Foxx (who was nominated for best supporting actor in one of the most recent cases of category fraud), Cruise’s silver fox Vincent in Michael Mann’s thriller is an underrated delivery. If only Oscar were willing to recognize two leading actors as they did earlier that decade with “Amadeus.” Cruise would have made a fine addition. Also a producer, Cruise has continued to elevate the entertainment medium with the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, which began in 1995. Alongside memorable turns from Brad Pitt and a young Kirsten Dunst, Neil Jordan’s horror adaptation of the Anne Rice novel is still a popular selection. All it took was a button-down shirt, briefs and a Bob Seger track to make Tom Cruise one of the defining movie stars of his generation. With lots of praise also going to his co-star Rebecca DeMornay, this is just as enjoyable as any film that ranks in the listing. As Joseph Kosinski’s “Top Gun: Maverick” still goes strong, making more than half a billion dollars domestically, Cruise has continued to etch himself into the cultural zeitgeist, crossing multiple generations.
Tom Cruise just shot past 60. Why this milestone birthday (July 3) is a victory for everyone after his ageless "Top Gun: Maverick" performance.
I turned the big 55 in April, and happened to be in a Ross Dress for Less, which is hard enough to admit. Nice. I generally reserve that line to explain how I ate all the doughnuts. To my existential relief, "Maverick" blasted through its "Danger Zone" takeoff and stuck the landing. Cruise obviously didn't have the washboard abs of his "Top Gun" volleyball game. I calmed myself by harnessing my inner Maverick. I'm sure Tom Cruise has figured out how to slow down, maybe even stop time. Turns out Ross has a very liberal senior discount for their Every Tuesday Club, which to my horror, I was suddenly eligible for. "Maverick" had to prove that 36 years ain't no big deal, it's a number, and whatever else we tell ourselves about getting old(er). And Cruise was leading the charge. It is an entirely worthy "Top Gun" follow, maybe even a superior film to the original. "Maverick" had to prove that 36 years ain't no big deal, it's a number, and whatever else we tell ourselves about getting old(er). And Cruise was leading the charge.was personal. But time and time again, it's just not possible to catch that same lightning in the sequel bottle. It was untamed enough to look like a victorious high school quarterback who pulled up post-shower to the homecoming dance. Yes, Tom Cruise, "we" made it.

Indeed, his reputation only gets cemented with each flick. Just Tom hanging on solo, without much assistance. In fact, this plane thing is just a taste of what he'll do in the new flick -- as we learned from the teaser trailer last month, Tom is also going to jump off a cliff while on a motorcycle ... only to be saved by a parachute. One description of this stunt -- which was reported on last year, as eyewitnesses saw Tom practicing in the U.K. -- explains he'll apparently slip out of the cockpit, make his way to the wing of the plane, hang there as the plane nosedives, and then do a barrel roll to boot. McQuarrie didn't add much context to this pic -- other than wishing Tom a happy 60th -- but it's pretty obvious this is from either "Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" or 'Part Two' ... both of which CMQ is helming with Tom in the driver's seat. Tom Cruise wasn't born on the Fourth of July, but came close -- and on his special day, a filmmaking partner is honoring him by basically saying ... never change, you nutty bastard.

A first trailer for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One has already teased that film’s action set-pieces, the most prominent of which seems to be a chase scene aboard a vintage train, and Cruise riding a motorbike off a cliff.
