Tiger Woods Shoots 77 in Ireland Pro-Am; First Public Round Since ... (Sports Illustrated)

The star-filled JP McManus Pro-Am at future Ryder Cup site Adare Manor is being used as a British Open tuneup for many top players.

Of course, it is a pro-am, and Woods over the years has played the with less intensity. It was also his first time playing golf in Europe since he missed the cut at the 2019 British Open at Royal Portrush. While he drove it well, his iron play was not up to his standards and his short game was not sharp.

Seamus Power and Shane Lowry were low Irishmen on the day and are tied for fourth place at 69. He leads Rickie Fowler by three shots and Tyrrell Hatton by four at the end of the first round. On the par-5 ninth hole Woods hit driver off the deck for the second shot and lost it way right of the fairway. The two highlights came on the 10th and 12th holes. On the fifth hole he was short with his approach and used putter but the ball stopped at the top of a hill and rolled back near his feet. Woods made double bogey on the second hole when he failed to get up and down and missed a six-footer for bogey.

Sixteen years ago at the K Club, an 11-year-old Leona Maguire was successful in her request for a picture with Tiger Woods.

"I was fortunate enough to play with Maeve [Danaher] on Saturday, so you never know, there might be a few ladies on the amateur teams that are up near the top of the leaderboard.
