It was set to reopen on Saturday 2nd July, but was delayed to Monday 4th due to bad weather. Last month the Office of Public Works (OPW) had to close the site of Skellig Michael to tourists following rock-fall on the island that deemed it unsafe, according to The Independent. While no one was injured, UNESCO closed the island to visitors immediately. According to gov.ie, sea conditions were too dangerous for the OPW guide staff to travel across to Skellig Michael on Friday 1st in order to prepare for visitors returning to the island on Saturday. Instead they aimed to travel on Sunday 3rd for people returning on Monday 4th.

Warm weather in time for re-opening of Skellig Michael (Independent.ie)

Sunshine greeted visitors to the world-famous Skellig Michael (Sceilg Mhichíl) today as the island re-opened to tourists.

It has been been three weeks today since it was last open. "Boat operators who land on the island have missed 21 landings due to the closure. Its closure was a huge blow to the boat operators to the island given it is only open for a short summer season.

Juanita Browne: Visit a seabird colony — they're wildlife wonders (Irish Examiner)

Gannets are perfectly designed for diving, they torpedo into the water from 30 metres or more above the surface and hit the water at 100kmph.

The sound and spectacle of Little Skellig is truly awe-inspiring. As the boat circles the island on its way to Skellig Michael, it’s the birds circling the rock in the skies above that I find mesmerising. Its long narrow wings are tipped with black and the adults are strikingly white, with just a golden sun-kissed crown of feathers on the head. I had heard and read so much about Skellig Michael, I guess I had an idea of what to expect when I visited back in 2011, but Little Skellig was an unexpected delight. Getting a good weather window for a boat trip to the Skelligs can be difficult, so it’s a relief when the boat departs the small harbour at Portmagee. The journey from Portmagee to the Skelligs, which lie about 12km offshore, takes about 50 minutes, and unfortunately many passengers suffer the effects of these choppy Atlantic waters. Visiting a seabird colony, such as Sceilig Bheag, in mid-summer is one of the most amazing wildlife experiences you could have.
