Thankfully, the soap gods decided against killing off the much-loved Emily, and Spider planned to head back home. Martin Hancock's character Spider Nugent is back on the cobbles after a 19-year absence, but what is there to know about the actor who plays him?
Her heart lies with the soaps, and her all-time favourite character has to be EastEnders' Pat Butcher - no one rocked a big earring quite like her. During her seven-year stint there she joined the cast of Emmerdale for a tour around the famous village, partied with soap stars at awards bashes, interviewed her acting idol David Suchet, and sat in the front row of Strictly Come Dancing. Martin admits he battled nerves and had a few sleepless nights ahead of his Corrie comeback. And after former co-star Georgia Taylor posted a nostalgic snap of a young Toyah and Spider together last Christmas, it got the actor thinking the good old days. In a new interview with What to Watch, Martin spoke about his return to Coronation Street and said: "I was extremely nervous before filming. In an interview a couple of years after her death, Martin said: "I was heartbroken — it was horrible. Martin Hancock was born on 6th September 1973 in Fulham, to an English dad and a New Zealander mum. He told Digital Spy (opens in new tab): "Whenever they've parted ways, it's always been with love in their hearts and kind words — they've always been friends. Martin is happily married in real life, although has not publicly disclosed his wife’s name. “It’s going to be a corker, and I was surprised when I found out what is coming up. “Georgia always had a good balance of understanding the time constraints of a show like Corrie, but still being thoughtful about how you’re going to play it and react to things. And there’s a warmth to him and Toyah’s dynamic that is picked up straight away, which I was really pleased about.” He may have worked on some big productions but Hancock is happily humble enough to acknowledge the lessons he learnt from Corrie. “Doing a soap or an advert are the two best training grounds for an actor,” he says. “An advert is two days for 30 seconds, sometimes on a soap it feels like you get 30 seconds prep for two days! It made me nostalgic, and my wife encouraged me to get in touch with Corrie about a possible return. “Spider was completely unaware she fancied him at first, you had a lovely comic story of a girl from the wrong side of the tracks falling for this intellectual activist. Eileen, on the other hand, was swinging her legs off a branch like she was on the swings at the playground! “That was filmed up a hill in a force four gale and I discovered Eileen was much braver than me!” recalls Hancock. “We were surrounded by metal scaffolding and when I heard thunder I started bricking it. The interplay between them was hugely important and huge credit to Eileen Derbyshire, who shifted the gears on her character seamlessly and with great charm. It was the link to the legendary Mrs Bishop that Hancock cites as the key to Spider’s success. “He was an outsider but the connections with people like Emily allowed his views to resonate better with people.
