It was a lovely finish from the Mullingar native after an exchange of passes with Max Mata. Sligo made it safe with a converted penalty by Aidan Keena in the third minute of stoppage time - his 11th goal of the campaign - after Shelbourne goalkeeper Brendan Clarke fouled Will Fitzgerald. Damien Duff's Shelbourne came to the north-west looking to make it a hat-trick of wins over the hosts, having already beaten Sligo twice this season.

Keena bags brace in Sligo Rovers win over Shelbourne (RTE.ie)

Sligo Rovers stretched their unbeaten run at home to seven games after beating Shelbourne 3-1 at the Showgrounds.

Kirk’s searching ball forward was weighted well enough to bring Keena into play. The Mullingar native bamboozled the Shels defence as he and Mata pulled off a series of one-twos, ending with Keena expertly lifting the ball over Clarke for his 10th goal of the year. Will Fitzgerald carried the ball a considerable distance before playing the ball into the path of Mata. The New Zealander lost his footing as he struck the ball but the mishap wasn’t enough to keep the ball out as Mata fired past Brendan Clarke for his second goal for the club.

If one leg of your 4+ fold Bet Builder fails to land, you get up to £/€10 back as a free bet. Sligo have failed to score once in their last 12 games. Shels’ results have generally been poor because of their first half displays this season. That loss to Bohs might seem poor in context, but the Gypsies were down to ten with half an hour to go and sat in. Shels are used to exploiting space quickly being newly-promoted but their build-up against low block isn’t what they’re practicing in sessions. But we know all about new manager bounces and how we have the consider them when factoring in pricing.
